When a commedia dell’arte troupe arrives in a small Italian village, they are greeted by cheers of welcome. Makeup and costumes transform actors from commoners into clowns, but the infidelity of one wife and the fury of her husband cannot be concealed. Comedy turns to tragedy when jealousy rages, lovers are revealed, and the curtain comes down on murder.

Turiddu returns from war to find his love, Lola, married to another. In a scheme to induce jealousy, he seduces Santuzza. As swiftly as she is beguiled, Santuzza is discarded while Turiddu begins an affair with his old flame. After the conclusion of Easter Mass, passions erupt and expose the ugliness of jealousy. Experience the grandeur of Verdi's "Aida" as the Boston Lyric Opera presents a specially staged concert of this timeless masterpiece. Set in the ancient lands of Egypt, the story revolves around the poignant love triangle between the valiant commander Radamès, the Ethiopian princess Aida, and the Egyptian princess Amneris. This production, conducted by BLO Music Director David Angus, promises to captivate audiences with its powerful arias, dramatic duets, and some of the most exhilarating choral works ever composed.

The performance features an exceptional cast, including Michelle Johnson as Aida, Diego Torre as Radamès, Alice Chung as Amneris, Morris Robinson as Ramfis, and Brian Major as Amonasro. The Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus, along with the Back Bay Chorale, will bring Verdi’s stirring score to life, culminating in the monumental Act Two Triumphal March.

Following the performance, attendees are invited to join The Opera Gala 2024, an event dedicated to raising funds in support of BLO’s free youth and community programs. This evening promises to be a celebration of operatic excellence and community spirit, showcasing the talents of some of the finest voices in the opera world today.

To win the vengeful Princess Turandot’s hand in marriage, Prince Calaf must first solve three riddles. But, if he answers one of them incorrectly, he’ll be put to death. No, it’s not a new reality show. It’s Puccini’s Turandot, and the frequently fatal questions are just the beginning. When the prince passes the test, the princess balks at holding up her side of the bargain. To give her an out and himself another shot, he offers her an intriguing riddle of his own: if she can guess his name by dawn, she’ll be off the hook, and he’ll be on the chopping block. Is one night enough to soften her scorn? Amidst his unmistakable melodies and trademark twists, Puccini draws inspiration from instruments and elements of the opera’s setting in ancient China and gives us his final, flawless love story.
