The corrupt chief of police is infatuated with the singer and so has two reasons to eliminate her lover Mario Cavaradossi, a sympathiser with the city’s political rebels. He offers Tosca the choice: if she gives herself to him, Mario will not be executed the next morning…

Verdi's relationship with Shakespeare's theater unfolds over the course of a long career studded with completed projects, such as Macbeth, Othello and Falstaff and others long pursued but never realized, such as Hamlet, The Tempest, King Lear . The first opportunity to try his hand at a subject by the English playwright came thanks to Alessandro Lanari, impresario of the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, who commissioned the composer to write a new opera for the 1847 Carnival season.

The Fondazione Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino along with the Fondazione “Musica per Roma” announce the important commission for a new opera: Romanzo criminale from the best seller by Giancarlo De Cataldo. The opera, with music and direction by Nicola Piovani, libretto by De Cataldo and directed by Massimo Popolizio, is scheduled at the Teatro del Maggio Fiorentino in October 2026, while in Rome at the Auditorium Parco della Musica “Ennio Morricone” it will be staged in 2027.
