In this program, highlighting one of the most important musical friendships of 19th-century Germany, Jansen and pianist Denis Kozhukhin pair arch-Romantic works by Clara and Robert Schumann with Brahms’s genial Violin Sonata No. 2 and his achingly lyrical Violin Sonata No. 3.

A whole range of stops will be pulled out once again: This time, an experienced and acclaimed organist will be our guest at the keys and pedals of our concert organ, much loved by the audience. Together with strings from the Bamberg Symphony, he will present several works that are wonderfully fitting for this Advent Sunday. The first part is dedicated to baroque music: after three touching solo pieces by Bach, a long-lost concerto for organ and violin by Vivaldi is performed – a particularly melody-laden example of his boundless artistry. In the second part, Tomaž Sevšek offers a foray into other musical realms – including a work composed in 1951 by his compatriot Primož Ramovš, whose numerous organ pieces have only rarely been performed in Germany to date. Portuguese composer João Pedro Oliveira is a versatile and award-winning composer: »Persistent Particles« from 2021 experiments with the tonal and technical possibilities of the organ in a fascinating manner. Schumann rented a pedal keyboard for his grand piano in 1845, which gave him and his wife Clara »much delight«. One of the results was the intimate study for pedal piano – in which Schumann expressed his spiritual and compositional affinity with Bach. The French composer Alexandre Guilmant expressed his fondness for the German Romantic composer in his atmospheric work »Final alla Schumann« in 1893.

The question of the authenticity of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for wind instruments has been discussed for decades without any convincing result. This plays no role for either the audience or the four soloists from the ranks of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - either way, the Sinfonia concertante is a masterpiece of wind literature. With the tender, lyrical "Siegfried Idyll", Richard Wagner gave his young wife Cosima a personal birthday present. Opera lovers will recognize leitmotifs from Wagner's music drama "Siegfried". Nathalie Stutzmann also presents a rarity: "Lachrimae antiquae" comes from a collection of lamentations by the Renaissance composer John Dowland. Robert Schumann did not look back all the way to the Renaissance, but at least to the Baroque period when composing his 2nd Symphony. His intensive engagement with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach was reflected in the work.

In Robert Schumann’s energetic Carnaval miniatures, Russian American pianist Kirill Gerstein “gets down deep,” highlighting something darker looming in the apparent revelry with “characteristic subtlety” (The New York Times). Such a searching approach to even tried-and-true showpieces makes Gerstein one of today’s most compelling recitalists. At the core of the program are a tour-de-force of concert staples, including Ravel’s dazzling solo-piano arrangement of La valse and Liszt’s Romantic masterpiece, the Piano Sonata in B Minor. Completing the program are Liszt’s mystically beautiful “Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude” and the New York premiere of Francisco Coll’s Waltzes Toward Civilization, inspired by Federico García Lorca’s seminal book of poetry, Poet in New York.

There is perhaps no more beloved violin concerto than Mendelssohn’s masterpiece. Journeying from darkness to light, it begins restless, mysterious and questioning, and ends in a blaze of colour, full of joy and exhilaration. The sheer quality of the music and lightness of touch, bursting with unbridled vitality that leaves audiences clamouring for more, makes it a favourite amongst performers and listeners alike. Brahms’ First Symphony, although inspired by those of his hero Beethoven, broke new ground for symphonic form. It is a symbolic journey from darkness to light, the themes developed from a handful of motivic nuggets, all smelted together into a shining edifice, with nothing wasted. A turbulent mood is established at the outset, by turns dark and meltingly warm, often infused with a rueful quality expressing a strain of sadness in his personality never lightened by artistic success. Schumann’s majestic and vivacious Overture, Scherzo & Finale is a joyous work. It opens in dramatic fashion, dark and challenging, until a lively major melody appears, lightening the mood.

Inseparably linked to the "Rhine Romanticism" is the story of the Loreley, who combed her golden hair while singing on a rock so that sailors looked up at her and sailed towards dangerous reefs and shallows of the river. The myth inspired painters,
poets and musicians, including the Rhinelander Max Bruch, who composed "The Loreley" in 1863, a very rarely performed opera. The Violin Concerto in E minor by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is completely different; it has been an indispensable part of concert halls since its premiere in Leipzig in 1845. Just a few years later, in 1850 in Düsseldorf, Robert Schumann's "Rhenish Symphony" was written. It is not a portrait of the river - rather, it combines sound-painting elements in which the Rhineland can be rediscovered.

Pianist Andrew Cooperstock performs widely as soloist and chamber musician and has appeared throughout six continents and in most of the fifty states, including performances at New York's Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations; at the Chautauqua, Brevard, and Round Top music festivals, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and Hong Kong’s Hell Hot! New Music Festival, and on National Public Radio, Radio France, and the British Broadcasting Corporation. With violinist William Terwilliger, as Opus Two, he has recorded a series of critically acclaimed single-composer discs of American music by Aaron Copland, Paul Schoenfield, George Gershwin, and Stephen Sondheim, among others, and his recording Leonard Bernstein: Complete Solo Works for Piano (Bridge Records and Deutsche Grammophon) was lauded by Gramophone as “winning” and “brilliant.” A Steinway artist, he was recently inducted into the Steinway Piano Music Teachers Hall of Fame. Dr. Cooperstock has served as Program Director of the Saarburg International Music Festival (Germany), faculty member at Adamant Music School, Brevard Music Center, and Round Top Festival-Institute, and is Professor of Piano at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he received the 2020 Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence Award in Teaching and Pedagogy.

For nearly 60 years, the Musicians from Marlboro touring program has presented eminent artists with exciting young musical leaders. This ensemble pairs Marlboro Music Co-Artistic Director Mitsuko Uchida and St. Louis Symphony Principal Violist Beth Guterman Chu with two outstanding emerging string players: violinist Stephanie Zyzak and cellist Oliver Herbert. Their program includes beloved works by Schumann and Beethoven, as well as selections from Signs, Games, and Messages by 1997 Marlboro Composer-in-Residence György Kurtág.

Experience an evening of exquisite musical artistry as baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber grace the stage at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Renowned for their profound interpretations of Lieder, this celebrated duo dedicates their program to the works of Robert Schumann. The performance will feature the Eichendorff Liederkreis, 5 Songs Op. 40, and volume three of the Romanzen und Balladen from 1840, alongside the 3 Songs Op. 83 and 6 Poems of Lenau from 1850. 

Gramophone has praised their Schumann recordings as "an album to treasure and to savour," while the Financial Times lauds Gerhaher's eloquence in singing his native German poetry. With a partnership spanning 30 years, Gerhaher and Huber have become fixtures on the stages of major international recital centers, particularly as frequent guests at Wigmore Hall. Their dedication to Lied interpretation is evident in both their concerts and recordings, making this recital a significant cultural event. 

The program will include Schumann's Märzveilchen, Muttertraum, Der Soldat, Der Spielmann, Verratene Liebe, Liederkreis Op. 39, Resignation, Die Blume der Ergebung, Der Einsiedler, Blondels Lied, Loreley, Der arme Peter, and 6 Gedichte von N Lenau und Requiem Op. 90. The Trio Chagall returns to Wigmore Hall following its recent tour of the UK. Based in Germany, the acclaimed Esme Quartet has swiftly garnered global acclaim as a chamber ensemble of exceptional artistry and achievement. United by a shared passion for music and the arts, the quartet brings together the performers’ brilliant and distinct musical personalities to form a cohesive, close-knit group that is passionately dedicated to delivering unified and fervent performances.

Conductor Jonathan Bloxham is from the north-east of England, a region where both the Romans and the Vikings have ruled - a region with a proud history and beautiful nature. Although Jonathan Bloxham now conducts in many places in the world, he still has an important contact with his home region, where he has created an annual festival which, among other things, promotes lesser-known and emerging composers and enlists young musicians from around the world to inspire audiences of all ages. Maybe also to record the music yourself. Jonathan Bloxham began taking cello lessons at the age of 8 at the local music school and continued at the Yehudi Menuhin School before coming to London. A childhood dream was to become a conductor. He succeeded, and he began as assistant conductor at the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has conducted in many places and is now director of the opera in Lucerne in Switzerland, where he will set the artistic line. He is also the conductor of the London Mozart Players, and here the interest in getting the music out widely is also expressed, e.g. when the orchestra invited local amateur musicians to play in their hall, when the hometown of Croydon, south of London, was a city of culture. Bloxham believes that if you only get people in once for a classical concert, they will probably give up.
