Pianist Andrew Cooperstock performs widely as soloist and chamber musician and has appeared throughout six continents and in most of the fifty states, including performances at New York's Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations; at the Chautauqua, Brevard, and Round Top music festivals, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and Hong Kong’s Hell Hot! New Music Festival, and on National Public Radio, Radio France, and the British Broadcasting Corporation. With violinist William Terwilliger, as Opus Two, he has recorded a series of critically acclaimed single-composer discs of American music by Aaron Copland, Paul Schoenfield, George Gershwin, and Stephen Sondheim, among others, and his recording Leonard Bernstein: Complete Solo Works for Piano (Bridge Records and Deutsche Grammophon) was lauded by Gramophone as “winning” and “brilliant.” A Steinway artist, he was recently inducted into the Steinway Piano Music Teachers Hall of Fame. Dr. Cooperstock has served as Program Director of the Saarburg International Music Festival (Germany), faculty member at Adamant Music School, Brevard Music Center, and Round Top Festival-Institute, and is Professor of Piano at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he received the 2020 Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence Award in Teaching and Pedagogy.

Experience an evening of exquisite musical artistry as baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber grace the stage at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Renowned for their profound interpretations of Lieder, this celebrated duo dedicates their program to the works of Robert Schumann. The performance will feature the Eichendorff Liederkreis, 5 Songs Op. 40, and volume three of the Romanzen und Balladen from 1840, alongside the 3 Songs Op. 83 and 6 Poems of Lenau from 1850. 

Gramophone has praised their Schumann recordings as "an album to treasure and to savour," while the Financial Times lauds Gerhaher's eloquence in singing his native German poetry. With a partnership spanning 30 years, Gerhaher and Huber have become fixtures on the stages of major international recital centers, particularly as frequent guests at Wigmore Hall. Based in Germany, the acclaimed Esme Quartet has swiftly garnered global acclaim as a chamber ensemble of exceptional artistry and achievement. Founded in 2016 in Cologne by four Korean musicians who have been friends since their youth, the quartet has been praised for its warm sound and powerful stage presence. United by a shared passion for music and the arts, the quartet brings together the performers’ brilliant and distinct musical personalities to form a cohesive, close-knit group that is passionately dedicated to delivering unified and fervent performances.

Conductor Jonathan Bloxham is from the north-east of England, a region where both the Romans and the Vikings have ruled - a region with a proud history and beautiful nature. Although Jonathan Bloxham now conducts in many places in the world, he still has an important contact with his home region, where he has created an annual festival which, among other things, promotes lesser-known and emerging composers and enlists young musicians from around the world to inspire audiences of all ages. Maybe also to record the music yourself. Jonathan Bloxham began taking cello lessons at the age of 8 at the local music school and continued at the Yehudi Menuhin School before coming to London. A childhood dream was to become a conductor. He succeeded, and he began as assistant conductor at the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has conducted in many places and is now director of the opera in Lucerne in Switzerland, where he will set the artistic line. He is also the conductor of the London Mozart Players, and here the interest in getting the music out widely is also expressed, e.g. when the orchestra invited local amateur musicians to play in their hall, when the hometown of Croydon, south of London, was a city of culture. Bloxham believes that if you only get people in once for a classical concert, they will probably give up.

Xian Zhang makes her Symphony Hall debut leading a work she premiered with the New Jersey Symphony in June 2023, Pulitzer Prize-winning Chinese-born composer Chen Yi’s Landscape Impression. American pianist Jonathan Biss is the soloist in Robert Schumann’s lyrical and powerful Piano Concerto. Schumann wrote the piece at the urging of his wife Clara, one of the great pianists of the age. Mozart’s elegant Symphony No. 39 was the first of his final trilogy of symphonies, written at lightning speed in summer 1788.

Young Turkish pianist Can Çakmur opens our new season with a characterful programme of lyrical colours and rich romanticism. He begins with Schumann’s youthful story of a masked ball where two brothers – representing the composer’s vying personalities – dance until the clock strikes midnight. Next is an epic Ballade, regarded as the most intense and powerful of all Chopin’s compositions and inspired by a poem by his Polish contemporary, Adam Mickiewicz. Can’s recital ends with four pieces written by Schubert shortly before his untimely death at 31. They are rich and atmospheric, delivering deep emotions.

Hailed as “intensely musical” (The Classical Review), Spanish-born conductor Juanjo Mena leads piano duo extraordinaire Lucas and Arthur Jussen in Mozart’s sunny Concerto for Two Pianos. The Dutch brothers bring to life a work Mozart originally composed for three pianos, but later re-arranged into an even more virtuosic showcase of Classical elegance and poise. Schumann agonized over the revisions for his second symphony for so long that it eventually became numbered as Symphony No. 4 — a brooding and passionate work that was well worth the wait.
