The last chamber music concert of 2025 will be full of folk rhythms, especially at the very end, thanks to Nikolai Kapustin’s lively Trio, Op. 86, which includes a jazzy flute part. "For the past few days, I've been pounding and trumpeting a lot inside me; I don't know what will come of it ," wrote Robert Schumann to his friend Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, announcing the first ideas for his new Symphony in C major. With the completion of the work, the Saxon Romantic composer had simultaneously overcome a severe depressive phase and was soon able to devote himself to his operatic project Genoveva . However, only the overture survived the repertoire. Ambitious and progressive, it is considered the best of the opera and surprises with its fresh gesture.

What the Czech composer Dvořák did for the music of his homeland, the British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor achieved for the music of other peoples, including his own African ancestors: He reconciled it with the Romantic mainstream. His cantata "Hiawatha's Wedding-feast" achieved cult status in England; the unpretentious, endearing Christmas Overture incorporates popular songs such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "Good King Wenceslas."

Described by the Guardian as 'a top-ranking virtuoso', Volodos opens this performance with Schubert’s Sonata in A major D959, written during the last months of the composer’s life. He follows this with Robert Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze, whose theme is based on a mazurka by Clara Wieck – the composer whom he would eventually marry. Lastly, Volodos will perform his own arrangement of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 13.

The "Babylon Suite" by Munich composer Jörg Widmann sets the entire concert hall vibrating. The work is an orchestral excerpt from his opera "Babylon," which premiered in 2012 and advocates for a heterogeneous society. The "fascinating simultaneity" of cultures, according to Widmann, is reflected in the richly staffed orchestra with its effervescent energy and electrifying tension. The composer himself conducts this concert, as this all-rounder of the classical music scene works equally as a composer, clarinetist, and conductor. He is particularly passionate about the works of Robert Schumann. Therefore, he also performs his Second Symphony, in which fiery verve blends with whispering elegance.

Artists in Residence Lucas & Arthur Jussen will be performing chamber music, presenting captivating works for two pianos or pianists. The program ranges from the vibrant and moving Schubert movements to the rhythmic fire of Béla Bartók and the Romanticism of Robert Schumann. Bartók impressively showcased the secret affinity between the sound of two pianos and percussion in his famous sonata. For piano four-hands, however, the early Romantic Schubert left behind more than any other great composer: among other things, the most monumental sonata movement for piano four-hands we know: a stormily beginning, almost grim Allegro, which later inspired the publisher to title it "Life's Storms." Yet here, too, the heavens open – with one of those harmonic turns with which the late Schubert repeatedly transports his listeners to another world. The same is true of his single Adagio Trio movement, in which time seems to stand still.

In this concert, you can expect pure romance! Robert Schumann's Second Symphony practically glows with energy, emotion, and vitality. Written during a time of personal crises, the music tells of inner struggle, but also of triumph and hope. The finale in particular is a true fireworks display, making Schumann's genius and unwavering will to live impressively palpable. On the other hand, Frédéric Chopin's First Piano Concerto transports its listeners to a world full of elegance and passion. With virtuosic runs and enchanting melodies, Chopin demonstrates why he was celebrated as one of the greatest pianists and composers of his time. As the icing on the cake, an overture by Fanny Hensel, the sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was equally as talented as her brilliant brother, will be performed.

Isabelle Faust, one of the most impressive violinists of our time, sums it up: "It's always about conveying the magic of music in the moment." The current "Artist in Residence" of the WDR Symphony Orchestra presents Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Violin Concerto in this concert. The work has everything that makes the hearts of music fans beat faster: warming lyricism, breathtaking virtuosity, and intoxicating sonic splendor. Robert Schumann was a close friend of Mendelssohn. Isabelle Faust also interprets his exciting violin fantasy, before Schubert's mysterious "Unfinished" concludes the concert, conducted by the British conductor Andrew Manze.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Antonín Dvořák found himself living in New York - a new world where new people arrived every day, the streets buzzed with life and the air was filled with promise. The Bohemian composer absorbed this energy and poured it into his final symphony: Symphony No. 9, better known as 'From the New World'. New influences, new styles, new ideas - the composer wove them together with his Bohemian folk roots, creating a work that transcends time and place.

The renowned Fauré Quartet expands its sound palette with the Finnish double bass player Janne Saksala, soloist and principal double bass of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2008. Together they will present a programme that brings together the highlights of Romantic chamber music. In 1852, Robert Schumann composed the Missa sacra for church services – a work that expresses not a denominational but a universal religious sentiment. The motet "Do Not Despair," initially described by Schumann as a "religious hymn," was first performed on July 4, 1850, for a secular occasion – the 25th anniversary of the St. Pauli University Choir in Leipzig. Haydn's Fifth London Symphony demonstrates the composer's independence from courtly taste and circumstances: He presents this work with pathos, earnestness, passion – and, unusually, in a minor key – thus forging a programmatic link back to Schumann.

Chamber music concerts are an important part of the program. In various formations and ensembles, the musicians of the Orchester der Oper Zürich explore a wide repertoire. At close quarters and in intimate spaces, audiences experience the intensity of the musicians as they make music. Each of the nine chamber music programs in the Spiegelsaal has its own individual focus: classics of the genre meet rarely heard works, and early music meets crossover. The «Zur Premiere» concert series feature programs specially tailored to a corresponding opera premiere. Chamber music concerts usually take place both at Sunday matinees and on Monday evenings. In addition, three special concerts on the Studiobühne stage shed light on influential composers from the first and second half of the 20th century, as well as the present. On the occasion of the premiere of Paul Hindemith’s opera «Cardillac», works by the composer, who lived in Zurich for a time, will be performed together with Leoš Janáček’s wind sextet «Mládi». To mark the 100th birthday of American avant-gardist Morton Feldman (1926-1987), the Opera Nova ensemble will perform his legendary trio «For Philip Guston», which lasts over four hours, in a special concert setting with a comfortable reclining area. One week before the Swiss premiere of Olga Neuwirth’s new music theater piece «Monster's Paradise» Opera Nova presents a portrait concert of the Austrian composer's chamber music works.

A cherished presence on Washington Performing Arts stages, Midori returns with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute for a program that traverses lyricism, passion, and brilliance. Anchored by Beethoven’s radiant “Spring” Sonata, the recital interweaves romantic nuance in the works of Clara and Robert Schumann, Poulenc’s bold contrasts, and the virtuosic sweep of Schubert’s Rondo Brillante—all brought to life with Midori’s musical insight and expressive power. A new work written for Midori by New York-based violinist and composer Che Buford combines violin and electronics. Buford describes their compositions as exploring the possibilities of timbre and acoustical phenomena and connecting them to elements of place, memory, poetry, and the quotidian.

A modern player with a signature sound and distinctive style, American cellist Mark Kosower embodies the international concept of the complete musician. He was a top prize winner in both the Rostropovich and Pablo Casals International Cello competitions. He has established a distinguished career as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras, in solo recitals, as an admired and sought-after chamber musician, and as a respected scholar and teacher. Formerly solo cellist of the Bamberg Symphony in Germany, he is now Principal Cello of The Cleveland Orchestra. His cello master classes at Hidden Valley Music Seminars in Carmel, California each summer draw professional-level participants from across the continent.

The evening's program is framed by two works for the ensemble of piano, viola and clarinet, an ensemble for which Mozart was the first to write a work back in 1786, which was to have a significant impact on the spread of the clarinet as a classical instrument. Robert Schumann's Fourth Symphony is simply the kind of music that makes you happy in your soul. It also makes you happy in your soul to see otherwise unknown composers receive the honor and dignity they deserve. This applies not least to female composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Clara Wieck Schumann, who have otherwise stood in the shadow of their more famous (or just more male) family members. It is the composer Juliana Hodkinson who has arranged works by the two women for the large orchestra.

Beethoven, Brahms, Bach – these have been Igor Levit's most important companions in recent years. The fact that his new program includes sonatas by Franz Schubert and Frédéric Chopin alongside Robert Schumann's Nocturnes is a cause for concern. "There are composers I prefer to listen to rather than play," Levit declared for many years when it came to Chopin. Of course, as probably every trained pianist does, he studied his etudes and sonatas during his studies, but this exploration only rarely found its way into the public eye. Until now! The third sonata, which Chopin himself called a "concerto without an orchestra," forms the significant climax of his piano recital at the Elbphilharmonie.

In no other music do the horns blare so joyfully and magnificently as in Robert Schumann’s Concert Piece in F major. Born in Zwickau, Schumann composed the work in Dresden in 1849, at the time a center of the German revolutionary movement. As Schumann noted, the political turmoil sparked his creative powers, as the jubilant sounds of his concert piece testify. A highlight of Sylvain Cambreling’s work as General Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera from 2012 to 2018 was the world premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s opera Erdbeben. Träume. From this work, the Japanese composer has put together an orchestral suite in which he reminds us of the extent to which (natural) disasters demand humility from life on our planet. Human destiny is at the very heart of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. The Russian Romantic composer considered “the whole of life“ to be “an incessant alternation of harsh reality with fleeting dreams of happiness“. And this is exactly what he turned into music with his Fourth, unleashing powerful storms of life as well as conjuring up islands of idyll.

Serbia’s Artist of the Century, violinist Stefan Milenkovich enjoys a prolific career internationally as soloist and recitalist. Established as one of the foremost violinists of his generation, Milenkovich appears regularly in some of the world’s most celebrated venues.


The multi-Grammy-nominated pianist Marta Aznavoorian is known for her spirited playing and vast emotional reach. She made her professional début at the age of 13 with the Chicago Symphony and has gone on to perform with orchestras throughout the United States and around the world.

A radiant force in the new generation of pianists, Avery Gagliano brings insight, imagination, and a bold interpretive voice to the stage. Hailing from Washington, D.C., Gagliano is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and a mentee of Sir András Schiff at the Kronberg Academy in Germany. A fusion of fresh sounds and timeless romance beginning with …and some fireworks! by Canadian composer Doolittle—a bold, high-energy opener that lights the spark for an evening of excitement. Get swept away Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by Saskatchewan’s own Godwin Friesen, a rising star with deep local roots and international flair. The evening culminates in Mendelssohn’s powerful Symphony No. 5 “Reformation.”

Mascagni’s emotional orchestral intermezzo from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana will open this program after which we welcome back the gifted pianist, Clayton Stephenson, for a performance of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2. Schumann’s “Rhenish” Symphony, which captures the sights and sounds of the landscape along Germany’s scenic Rhine River, will bring a peaceful conclusion to our evening.
