Archduke Rudolph of Austria was the pianist for the premiere of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto—and he also happened to be one of the composer’s most important patrons. To make him shine, Beethoven brought in two of the best players of the day. We’ve got our own trio of all-stars on tap for this program, which includes Schumann’s reflection of life in the Rhineland.

For his return to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, American conductor Ryan Bancroft has put together a program that, with works from Sweden, Germany, and Great Britain, essentially maps out his personal professional landscape. The concert begins with a young piece from Bancroft's current musical home of Sweden: The leader of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducts a work by former NDR Composer in Residence Anders Hillborg. This all-rounder of new music wrote his sonically irresistible "Sound Atlas" on commission from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, among others. After the triumphant premiere in 2019, the Financial Times wrote: "If Stanley Kubrick were to return for a remake of '2001' and needed a soundtrack, Hillborg would be his man."

Four remarkable artists with a passion for chamber music have come together to form an exciting new piano-and-strings quartet, destined to become an audience favorite.  For decades, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson, together with their piano trio partner the late Joseph Kalichstein, were hailed as “chamber music royalty” (Washington Post), a distinction that equally applies to their ESPRESSIVO! partners—the stellar violist Milena Pájaro-van de Stadt, a founding member of the Dover Quartet, and the award-winning pianist Anna Polonsky, one of chamber music’s most sought-after collaborators.  Their program includes favorites by Beethoven and Schumann and a reprise of Richard Danielpour’s Book of Hours, co-commissioned by the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle and premiered on our series at Olin Auditorium in 2007.

At the beginning of June, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt), with its solo clarinetist Tomaž Močilnik and the young French-British conductor Stephanie Childress, will open the Weilburg Castle Concerts. The program presented will perfectly suit the summer festival, featuring the late, intimately warm Clarinet Concerto by the Viennese Classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the 3rd Symphony by the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann, imbued with the spirit of the Rhineland.

This semi-staged concert is based on our preconceptions of mental illness, with each piece having a connection to the psychology of the mind – centred around Peter Maxwell Davies’ harrowing depiction of the ‘madness’ of King George III.

Maxwell Davies was a key member of the Manchester School of Composers, who reshaped the landscape of British music in the late 20th century. 8 Songs for a Mad King is a melodrama with a libretto based on the real-life observations of King George III, presenting an extravagant and disturbing portrayal of his condition. 

Vocalising weirdly as he bemoans his fate, trying to teach his instrumentalist-birds to sing – our musicians becoming projections from within his own mind.

A concert like a tender confession. It begins with a lament and ends with a departure. In between, sound spaces unfold that offer protection while daring to be open. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" resonates with painful beauty. Lisa Streich composed "Mantel" as a piece about coverings: about what they conceal and what shines through them. A fragile texture emerges that protects and conceals. But what lies beneath? In Caroline Shaw's "Entr'acte," we hear more than a harmless interlude: full of lightness and wit, it surprises with unexpected twists. And then: spring. Schumann's First Symphony allows hope to blossom with every note. Those who allow themselves to be carried by Schumann's momentum sense that even departure requires vulnerability. And how radically vibrant a new beginning can sound!

What does a river sound like? How does music march? And who plays what in the orchestra? In this concert for grades 3 and 4, students embark on a musical journey of discovery together with solo bassoonist Theo Plath and the hr Symphony Orchestra. The centerpiece is Robert Schumann's "Rhenish Symphony"—a work that is like a musical travel diary full of impressions. Inspired by his move to the Rhineland, Schumann incorporated images of nature, experiences, and moods—sometimes festive, sometimes dreamy. The instruments are introduced piece by piece, their roles in the orchestra explained—and, of course, experienced live. An interactive excursion right into the world of classical music: vivid, engaging, and full of listening fun for young ears!

"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann . Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. The Ring Without Words is an orchestral suite that distills the most iconic themes from Richard Wagner’s monumental tetralogy, The Ring of the Nibelung. This 70-minute symphonic fresco encapsulates the essence of the 15-hour epic, telling the tale of a magical ring forged by the dwarf Alberich from gold stolen from the Rhine. While the ring grants immense power, it also brings ruin and destruction to those who possess it. Wotan, the king of the gods, attempts to control the ring but fails, leading to the gods’ downfall. Betrayed and manipulated, the hero Siegfried is killed by Hagen, son of Alberich. Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie, daughter of Wotan and wife of Siegfried, returns the ring to the Rhine, marking the end of an era. The Ring Without Words offers an immersive journey through Wagner’s world, highlighting its most memorable moments, including the prelude to Das Rheingold, the Ride of the Valkyries, Siegfried’s death and funeral music, and the apocalyptic conclusion in Twilight of the Gods. In a thrilling season finale, the soaring lyricism of Schumann’s Piano Concerto, performed by pianist Yefim Bronfman, contrasts with the destructive power of gold in Wagner’s epic, creating a stunning clash of opposing powers.

The last but one concert of the Chamber Music Series focuses on the folklore inspired works by the Slovak composer Ilya Zeljenka; as well as Antonín Dvořák, who used the subtitle “Slavonic” in his String Quartet No. 10 in E flat major, Op. 51. Do you love Brahms? Ever since the film of the same name starring Ingrid Bergmann, Yves Montand, and Anthony Perkins first flickered across screens in the 1960s, the world melts away when the Poco Allegretto from Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3 sounds. It is music of truly agonizing beauty and intensity—made of pure love and longing, melancholy and renunciation. José Carreras sang the words " Close to me" to it , and in a semi-symphonic, light music arrangement, it became the Symphony of Love . For Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann—Brahms's great mentor and friend, but also their rival in the struggle for Clara's love—this music was like "a gray pearl, surrounded by a tear of melancholy." Schumann's profound, only violin concerto dates from this difficult, final period in his life. It's rarely heard, and few have it in their repertoire. Our soloist does: Baiba Skride, Latvian star violinist, who has toured the world with the elite conductors and orchestras for years and first appeared with us in 2004.

Attention Dvořák fans: After the Fifth Symphony in the fifth symphony concert, here follows his Seventh – perhaps the most serious, but possibly also the most deeply moving, by the Bohemian musician, who over time conquered Europe and the USA. But those who focus only on this classic can easily overlook the others in this concert. Annabel Hauk, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1999, plays cello in Robert Schumann's A minor Concerto, which offers the solo instrument a pleasing amount of scope for elegiac expression and, as one of the first works from his Düsseldorf period, still exudes a great deal of joie de vivre. It is only fitting that chief conductor Nicholas Milton opens the morning with Weber's Freischütz Overture, as it is equally rich in color.

A romantic programme with a close connection to Dresden. As royal Kapellmeister from 1817, Carl Maria von Weber had a long-lasting impact on the city’s musical life. His »Oberon« overture is a late vision of romantic opera that is both radiant and dramatically charged. Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto was premiered on 4 December 1845 at the local Hotel de Saxe with Clara Schumann as soloist and Ferdinand Hiller conducting. Clara noted in her diary: »The concerto is quite rich in invention. All the movements are particularly beautiful, all of a piece, fresh and not too long.« Johannes Brahms was also closely associated with Dresden, frequently performing here as a pianist and conductor of his own works.

With A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mendelssohn whisks you away to his enchanting fairytale world from the very first notes. Pianist Alexander Lonquich, a master of early Romantic repertoire, brings brilliance to Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto – a work with a hidden story. Did you know a passage was composed by Delphine von Schauroth, a German pianist, though her name never made the title page? Mendelssohn’s music, in turn, inspired his friend Robert Schumann, whose ‘Rhenish’ Symphony flows like the majestic Rhine, perhaps echoing his visit to Cologne Cathedral. Under Philippe Herreweghe’s baton, Schumann’s grandeur and Mendelssohn’s magic come alive in this collaboration with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.

For the first time this season, a soundscape concert will take place in the DIE EICHE columbarium. An urn cemetery has been created in the historic granary at Hansahafen, enabling a pioneering form of commemoration of the dead and simultaneously serving as a venue for cultural encounters. The events focus on a different theme each year; in 2026, the theme will be nature. The soundscape concert will present works for string quartet and voice that touch on the themes of nature, love, life, and death in diverse ways. The songs in Paul Hindemith's cycle "Melancholie" based on texts by Christian Morgenstern are filled with dreams, moonlight, and ghostly voices in the forest and fog. Johannes Brahms' five Ophelia songs focus on the woman from Shakespeare's "Hamlet," driven to madness and suicide. Her fate is also taken up in the first of Robert Schumann's Six Songs, Op. 107. In addition to and between the sung songs in the program, songs without words from the cycle "Cypresses" for string quartet will also be heard, with which Antonín Dvořák created a touching portrait of his childhood sweetheart.

Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was a gift to his wife Cosima on the birth of their son. The music, one of the composer's sunniest creations, takes up motifs from the opera Siegfried, which Yannick Nézet-Séguin will also be bringing to his Baden-Baden guest performance this spring. In Götterdämmerung, the conclusion of the Ring tetralogy, the older Siegfried will embark on a trip on the Rhine. But today’s audience beats him to it: with Robert Schumann's cheerful and Romantic “Rhenish” Symphony.
