Strahinja Mitrović made history in 2024 when he became the first double bassist to win the Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s illustrious Gold Medal since its inception 109 years earlier, following in the footsteps of, among others, Jacqueline Du Pré, Sir Bryn Terfel and Maxim Rysanov. The Serbian musician, whose artistry was lauded with a five-star review by The Arts Desk and acclaimed for its ‘stunning originality’, also won the Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize, enabling him to make his Wigmore solo debut this evening.

Born in France, to a French father and Korean mother, the foundations of Irène Duval’s perceptive artistry were set during her studies at the Conservatoire de Paris and Kronberg Academy. In high demand as a chamber music partner, she’s joined this morning by Canadian pianist Connie Shih for a recital that encompasses the dynamic energy of Beethoven’s Fourth Violin Sonata and Robert Schumann’s dramatic Violin Sonata in D minor.

The veteran Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder is certain about the qualities that propelled Ariel Lanyi to the finals of the Leeds and Rubinstein International Piano Competitions. ‘His playing is precise, nuanced, and virtuosic, but he is no superficial virtuoso,’ he notes. ‘What sets him apart is his ability to delve deeply into the music and to establish a connection with it.’ Lanyi’s thoughtfully-crafted programme concludes with the character studies and atmospheric impressions of Debussy’s second book of Préludes.

Three icons of Romanticism, an emotional intermezzo, a world-famous violin concerto and the sounds of the Rhein will make up the program of the Budapest Festival Orchestra in Montpellier. The first notes of the concert will be played in a commemoration: Brahms’s lament seeking calm will be performed in the orchestration and in memory of Victor Aviat, principal oboist of the orchestra, who passed away in May. The Mendelssohn concerto in the middle, comprising a challenging opening movement, a lyrical aria and a finale evoking A Midsummer Night’s Dream will feature the soloist Renaud Capuçon, a returning guest artist for the BFO. The former concertmaster of Claudio Abbado will use his 1737 Guarnieri violin to share the deep and nuanced tones of the piece, while displaying the virtuosity which makes him a favorite of audiences and critics. The program will conclude with a Schumann symphony inspired by pleasant experiences and calling to mind a peaceful riverside excursion.

Music from Salem brings together musicians of international reputation to prepare and perform chamber music in the peace and beauty of rural Washington County, New York, and environs. Chamber music is classical music written for a small group of performers, and includes a range of styles, from the 18th century to today. Romanian composer Tiberiu Olah’s Sonata for clarinet solo distils the energy and mystery of primeval folk music into a short work of immense character. Julian Bliss sets it in company with the lyricism of the second of the two Clarinet sonatas Brahms composed in his final years. In the programme’s second half, he and James Baillieu explore the melancholy moods of Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op. 73 and restless contrasts of Brahms’s Clarinet Sonata in F minor.

Kindred spirits Matthew Barley and Mishka Rushdie Momen share a refreshing attitude to thinking about and performing music, always ready to reject tired conventions yet alive to the essential spirit that unites the best of past and present. Their programme revels in the cello’s singing line, present in Barley’s elegant transcriptions of Lieder by Robert Schumann and the lyrical warmth and expressive gravity of Brahms’s First Cello Sonata.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra takes a musical trip to the banks and into the depths of the Rhine when offering Schumann’s symphony, inspired by charming experiences and a Wagner scene. The former commemorates a peaceful riverside excursion to the Rhine, and the latter is one of the most famous scenes from the monumental opera tetralogy, The Ring of the Nibelung. The concert will feature two outstanding singers in the roles of Brünhilde and Wotan in one of the most dramatic father-daughter scenes in operatic literature. Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg, who is very much at home in the Wagnerian repertoire, has sung the title role in numerous productions from Stockholm to Madrid to Bordeaux.

"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann . Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. Ranging from the Baroque to the present day, with a special focus on the Romantic period, "The Fantastic" will be explored with a variety of chamber music works in diverse ensembles.

German-born Rolf Schulte, whom The New Yorker has called “one of the most distinguished violinists of our day,” started playing the violin at age five under his father’s tutelage. He later studied with Kurt Schäffer at the Robert Schumann Institute in Düsseldorf, attended Yehudi Menuhin’s summer course in Gstaad, Switzerland, and studied with Franco Gulli at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena before moving to the United States to study with Ivan Galamian at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. At age 16, he made his orchestral debut with the Philharmonia Hungarica in Cologne, playing Mendelssohn’s Concerto. Under the auspices of Young Concert Artists he gave his New York debut at Town Hall to great acclaim.

The relationship between Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms is one of the most fascinating triangular relationships in music history. It was characterized by deep friendship, profound artistic admiration, and emotional intimacy that—one might hope—always remained within the bounds of social conventions. Robert Schumann, the visionary composer and music writer, and Clara Schumann, the exceptional pianist and passionate interpreter of his works, had a marriage marked by intense musical collaboration, but also by Robert's recurring mental health crises. When the twenty-year-old Johannes Brahms entered the couple's lives in 1853—young, brimming with creative energy, and possessing a talent that Robert celebrated with ecstatic enthusiasm as opening up "new paths" in music—a particularly close bond developed between the three of them. Robert treated the young Brahms with fatherly affection, nurtured his talent, and recognized his extraordinary genius, while Clara saw him as a kindred spirit and intellectual companion. Whether a love ever developed between her and Brahms that transcended the boundaries of friendship remains uncertain—a shadowy, fascinating mystery that continues to surround music history.

For his return to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, American conductor Ryan Bancroft has put together a program that, with works from Sweden, Germany, and Great Britain, essentially maps out his personal professional landscape. The concert begins with a young piece from Bancroft's current musical home of Sweden: The leader of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducts a work by former NDR Composer in Residence Anders Hillborg. This all-rounder of new music wrote his sonically irresistible "Sound Atlas" on commission from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, among others. After the triumphant premiere in 2019, the Financial Times wrote: "If Stanley Kubrick were to return for a remake of '2001' and needed a soundtrack, Hillborg would be his man."

Maxwell Davies was a key member of the Manchester School of Composers, who reshaped the landscape of British music in the late 20th century. 8 Songs for a Mad King is a melodrama with a libretto based on the real-life observations of King George III, presenting an extravagant and disturbing portrayal of his condition.

The Ring Without Words is an orchestral suite that distills the most iconic themes from Richard Wagner’s monumental tetralogy, The Ring of the Nibelung. This 70-minute symphonic fresco encapsulates the essence of the 15-hour epic, telling the tale of a magical ring forged by the dwarf Alberich from gold stolen from the Rhine. While the ring grants immense power, it also brings ruin and destruction to those who possess it. Wotan, the king of the gods, attempts to control the ring but fails, leading to the gods’ downfall. Betrayed and manipulated, the hero Siegfried is killed by Hagen, son of Alberich. Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie, daughter of Wotan and wife of Siegfried, returns the ring to the Rhine, marking the end of an era. The Ring Without Words offers an immersive journey through Wagner’s world, highlighting its most memorable moments, including the prelude to Das Rheingold, the Ride of the Valkyries, Siegfried’s death and funeral music, and the apocalyptic conclusion in Twilight of the Gods. The last but one concert of the Chamber Music Series focuses on the folklore inspired works by the Slovak composer Ilya Zeljenka; as well as Antonín Dvořák, who used the subtitle “Slavonic” in his String Quartet No. 10 in E flat major, Op. 51. The ninth concert, featuring the Kaprálová Quartet, will also offer Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44, with Petr Jiříkovský at the piano.

Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet in E-flat major showcases the brilliant chamber music composer at the end of his famous "chamber music year" of 1842.  Only Stephen Hough could shape a concert like this. We begin with Klavierstücke – literally, ‘Piano Pieces’ – from two romantic giants, Schubert and Brahms, and two towering 20th-century composers, Schoenberg and Stockhausen. From Beethoven’s majestic ‘Waldstein’ Sonata, Robert Schumann’s vivid suite transports us to the heart of carnival. And we end – where else? – on the streets of Edwardian London, with Hough’s own bravura arrangements of songs from Mary Poppins.

Schumann’s Cello Concerto remains a beloved favourite in the cello repertoire. The three movements seamlessly flow as one continuous piece of music packed with emotional intensity. Full of tender lyricism, soulful melodies and a daring solo cello part, it’s perfectly suited to Kian Soltani’s “piercingly beautiful tone and utterly pure intonation” (The Times).

Do you love Brahms? Ever since the film of the same name starring Ingrid Bergmann, Yves Montand, and Anthony Perkins first flickered across screens in the 1960s, the world melts away when the Poco Allegretto from Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3 sounds. It is music of truly agonizing beauty and intensity—made of pure love and longing, melancholy and renunciation. José Carreras sang the words " Close to me" to it , and in a semi-symphonic, light music arrangement, it became the Symphony of Love . For Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann—Brahms's great mentor and friend, but also their rival in the struggle for Clara's love—this music was like "a gray pearl, surrounded by a tear of melancholy." Schumann's profound, only violin concerto dates from this difficult, final period in his life. It's rarely heard, and few have it in their repertoire. Our soloist does: Baiba Skride, Latvian star violinist, who has toured the world with the elite conductors and orchestras for years and first appeared with us in 2004.
