Composer

One of the most distinctive artists and polymaths of his generation, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career as a pianist with those of a composer and writer. The first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, Hough is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance from Northwestern University, the Royal Philharmonic Instrumentalist Award, and first prize at the Naumburg Competition. In 2014, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Hough has performed with most of the major European, Asian, and American orchestras and regularly plays recitals in major halls, concert series, and festivals around the world. His catalogue of over sixty albums has garnered prizes such as the Diapason d’Or de l’Année, Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, several Grammy nominations, and eight Gramophone awards, including the “Gold Disc” Award, which named his complete Saint-Saëns Piano Concertos as the best recording of the past thirty years. As a composer, Hough has written commissions for institutions such as the Cliburn, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Wigmore Hall. Hough holds the International Chair of Piano Studies at Manchester’s Royal Northern College and is a faculty member at the Juilliard School.

Give Me Your Stars explores the profound and diverse beauty of music inspired by the heavens, human connection, and the places we call home. At its heart is Lucy Walker’s eponymous new work, written for VOCES8, which captures the delicate balance between celestial wonder and the deep, personal connections that make us human.

The programme spans centuries of choral music, from the luminous polyphony of Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Regina caeli to timeless jazz standards. Along the way, we encounter the reflective sentiments of Eric Whitacre’s All Seems Beautiful to Me and Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas, folk traditions in Danny Boy and Michael McGlynn’s Dúlamán, and evocative tales of cities and starlight in April in Paris and New York, New York.

What do Hugo Wolf, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius and Alexander Zemlinsky have in common? They studied with Robert Fuchs at the Vienna Conservatory. His own work faded behind the success of his students. With his Terzett in A major in the rare instrumentation for two violins and viola, Fuchs shows himself to be an admirer of Brahms. Hans Gál, born in Lower Austria in 1890, was also inspired by Brahms. He studied in Vienna and taught there at the New Conservatory. After fleeing from the National Socialists, Gál lived in Great Britain. His Quintet for clarinet and string quartet, composed in 1977, oscillates between late Romanticism and almost classical transparency. The program concludes with one of Franz Schubert’s great chamber music works, his Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat major. The Viennese composer completed it in 1828, the year of his death, and the symphonic structure of this work went beyond the usual framework. Great music between lightness and epic depth.

Through night to light – per aspera ad astra – numerous works and symphonies since Beethoven's Fifth Symphony have led. Would Franz Schubert have followed a similar path if he had completed the Symphony Fragment in B minor, as the "Unfinished" should correctly be called? After the abysmal, gloomy beginning of the work, the second movement already embarks on the path to light and contains passages of otherworldly beauty that have cast off all earthly weight. Bruckner's Seventh Symphony takes the key of this movement, the radiant E major, as its home key, so that the symphony, metaphorically speaking, already begins in the light. Conversely, as in Schubert's case, the second movement then marks the zone of gloom and despair. In the end, however, this Seventh Symphony closes in dazzling brightness.

The Calidore String Quartet, recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of a vast chamber music repertory, presents a concert of works by two giants of chamber music literature - Beethoven and Schubert. Beethoven's favourite of the late quartets, opus 131 in C-sharp minor, has a grandeur which no words can express. After hearing this work Schubert said, “After this, what is there left to write?” Sibling cellists come together as Arnold Choi joins the quartet for Schubert’s sumptuous and profound Cello Quintet, his final chamber music composition.

With his String Quartet No. 14 in A-flat major, Antonín Dvořák bid farewell to the United States of America. He began it in 1895, shortly before leaving the country after a three-year stay. What he took with him were lasting impressions of the vastness of the country and numerous elements of American music.

"I'm not trying to teach history or a lesson in violin playing. I simply want people to feel real emotions through my music," says Nemanja Radulović about his art. And what piece would be better suited for this than Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor? One of the most poignant melodies in music history opens the work. Sister Fanny begins the program, and Schubert's Second Symphony – a small rarity – culminates.

A friend of Haydns and an extremely prolific composer in her time, Martines was one of the few women to compose symphonies in 18th-century Vienna—and her music bursts with elegance, vitality, and charm. Next comes a piece woven into CSO’s own history: Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony, the very first symphony performed by the orchestra in 1934. With a captivating program, the hr-Symphony Orchestra's chamber concert enriches this season's Lauterbach Hohhaus Concerts. Franz Schubert's "Arpeggione" Sonata is among the Viennese Romantic composer's most famous chamber works. Its sonorous soundscape makes it a truly virtuosic piece, which can be experienced alongside two brilliantly compelling chamber music works from the early years of the great operatic dramatist Richard Strauss. The 19-year-old Strauss's Piano Quartet in C minor is considered the pinnacle of his engagement with Brahms. His only violin sonata, composed at the age of 23, was also a stroke of genius.

His last, great symphony in C major "has resonated among us like none since Beethoven's," wrote Schumann, who so deeply revered Schubert's symphonic legacy. With Kent Nagano, it finds a conductor here who, like few others, can open ears anew to this singular masterpiece. Kent Nagano, however, always brings contemporary music to the forefront. He is particularly fond of the music of Henri Dutilleux, who died in 2013 at the age of 97: Dutilleux was considered the last French classic of modernism and a composer who valued lyricism, poetry, and iridescent timbre. And, as is especially true of the cello concerto "Tout un monde lointain…", the virtuosity—the cello, under the hands of Jan Vogler, is required to perform truly acrobatic feats. Yet Dutilleux never lost touch with his listeners. He, who can be considered the heir of Maurice Ravel in particular, once said that for every young composer there is "the moment when he has to, so to speak, kill his father. Perhaps I haven't done that thoroughly enough. But perhaps that's precisely why my music is more accessible to the public. Although it was never my intention to be understood. I'm simply searching for my absolute truth."

With his Symphony No. 31, Mozart wanted to make an impression in the French capital and thus pulled out all the stops by employing not only timpani and trumpets but also clarinets, flutes, oboes, bassoons, and horns. The magnificent “Paris” symphony provides an effective counterpart to Schubert’s “Great C major” Symphony that follows. At the time, the hour-long symphony was considered too demanding and disappeared into the archives. It was Schumann who rediscovered it and arranged for its premiere. It is almost heartbreaking to realise that Schubert himself never got to hear his wonderful Eighth Symphony. But you, dear audience, will now have that privilege.

Dvořák is the favorite composer of many classical music fans and orchestras alike. His music plays well – and is pleasant to listen to. It is often lighthearted, comfortable, and full of life. The Czech national classic is represented twice in our concert – with two concert overtures, one of which poetically captures rural moods and views, the other sparklingly immerses itself in a turbulent carnival festivities. Brahms' profound A minor concerto, the so-called "Double Concerto," features two soloists – a work tailor-made for our brotherly soloist duo of Claudio and Oscar Bohórquez. The two also plays a role in Schubert's Symphony in B minor. It consists of two movements, not four like a conventional symphony, which is why it is nicknamed the Unfinished . Nevertheless, it is a complete masterpiece. It moves forward with double the force.

Everything from Sibelius' Christmas Carol, Koppången and Klang min vackra bjällra , to Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which are also included in the program. To help us, we have Norrköping-born Olle Persson as soloist and the choirs Bel Canto and Musikaliska Sällskapets Kammarkör. It almost couldn't get better. Artists in Residence Lucas & Arthur Jussen will be performing chamber music, presenting captivating works for two pianos or pianists. The program ranges from the vibrant and moving Schubert movements to the rhythmic fire of Béla Bartók and the Romanticism of Robert Schumann. Bartók impressively showcased the secret affinity between the sound of two pianos and percussion in his famous sonata. For piano four-hands, however, the early Romantic Schubert left behind more than any other great composer: among other things, the most monumental sonata movement for piano four-hands we know: a stormily beginning, almost grim Allegro, which later inspired the publisher to title it "Life's Storms." Yet here, too, the heavens open – with one of those harmonic turns with which the late Schubert repeatedly transports his listeners to another world. The same is true of his single Adagio Trio movement, in which time seems to stand still.

The Hamburg Doctors’ Orchestra is mainly made up of doctors and musicians from medical professions. The orchestra was founded in 1964 and performs for charitable purposes: for example, to support the work of the Hamburg Hospice Foundation.

No other contemporary singer's name is as synonymous with the Lied as that of Julian Prégardien. Although also impressive on the operatic stage and in oratorios with his deeply sensitive tenor, the German singer reveals himself particularly intensely in the lyrical, poetic, and romantic genre of the Lied. He repeatedly delves into this cosmos, especially with songs by Schubert, but also by other composers who are at home in this field. To ensure that an orchestra like the CAMERATA—known for its vocal sound and chamber music sensitivity—can also perform in the area of ​​Lieder normally reserved for piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements of two Lied compositions by Beethoven and Schubert were selected. Even in the original, they depict epic song scenes, whose dimensions are all the more enhanced with orchestral support. To the songs with words, the CAMERATA adds the endless song without words from Schubert's Symphony in B minor.
