The Takács released two anniversary-season albums in 2025 for Hyperion Records to glowing reviews. In August 2025, for Musica Viva in Australia, the ensemble performed a new work, Sonnet of an Emigrant, for quartet and narrator by Cathy Milliken with texts by Bertolt Brecht.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan-Akademie regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

The jury was unanimous: the 2025 Music Prize of the German Economy goes to the young baritone Jonas Müller! Born in Lower Bavaria in 1999, Müller could celebrate not only the € 15,000 award but also his debut concert at Lucerne Festival. He impressed with an intelligent program that, as the jury noted, was “marked by authenticity and seriousness.” He follows the same principle in his Lucerne recital. Under the theme “Somewhere in the World,” he sings of longing for faraway places and for home, of dreams of love and of solitude — with settings by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler and Hanns Eisler. From Eisler, he performs six songs from the Hollywood Songbook: his contribution to this summer’s theme, “American Dreams.” Jonas Müller has already won numerous prizes, including as a duo with his piano partner Anna Gebhardt. Since the fall of 2025, the student of Christian Gerhaher has been a member of the Opera Studio of Oper Frankfurt, where he made his debut as Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised him for “vocal elegance and a fine touch of comedy.”

Trio Azura has quickly emerged as one of today’s most promising young ensembles, praised by Gramophone for its “intelligence and imagination” and “profound emotion.” Formed in 2022 at the Colburn School, where they are ensemble in residence, the trio studies with Jonathan Brown, Martin Beaver, Clive Greensmith, and Fabio Bidini. The members of Trio Azura were named winners of the 2025 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and appointed YCA Jacobs Fellows, becoming YCA’s first ensemble in residence.

A true legend will take the stage with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. The grande dame of the piano, the “priestess of art,” Elisabeth Leonskaja, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) in 2020, used to perform in duo with Sviatoslav Richter while conquering the world’s most prestigious concert halls. This time, she will perform one of Mozart’s most popular and grandiose piano concertos, and the only one concluding in a minor key. This piece will be framed in a special manner. The concert will open with music by Schubert, who, in addition to inventing the genre of German songs – writing more than 600 of them –, after six symphonies arrived at an entirely new orchestral language, even if the piece ultimately remained unfinished. Relationships between men and women will take center stage after the intermission. The music of Bartók’s pantomime, The Miraculous Mandarin, will come to life through a storyline that explores questions of body and soul.

Béla Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin captures the raw, gritty pulse of the modern metropolis. The action unfolds in a seedy den where a young woman lures passersby inside. But instead of finding the pleasure they came for, they are quickly overpowered and robbed by her accomplices — until a mysterious stranger, the Mandarin, falls into the trap . . . The world premiere in 1926 caused such an uproar in Catholic Cologne that the mayor — none other than the future German chancellor Konrad Adenauer — banned the work outright. Bartók then prepared a concert version, though he was never happy with it. “This work is a pantomime with music; both elements should be performed together,” he wrote in the score.

His former student, Paul Lewis, reflects Brendel’s influence through his ‘unshowy, deeply considered interpretations,’ (The Times). Following their performances of Schubert’s song cycles Die schöne Müllerin on August 16 and Schwanengesang on August 17, baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist Simon Lepper mark their final appearance of the season with perhaps the pinnacle of the art-song repertoire: Schubert’s mournful and achingly beautiful Winterreise, which the composer said he liked “more than any of my other songs.”

This thrilling program centers on piano duets by Schubert, Rachmaninoff, and György Kurtág, which are performed here by award-winning pianists Kirill Gerstein and Katia Skanavi. The duo is joined by New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Percussionist Daniel Druckman and Mike Truesdell for Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, a work that was wonderfully innovative (for its unusual instrumentation and wide range of influences) when Bartók premiered it alongside his pianist wife in 1938.

For the second of their three appearances this season, baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist Simon Lepper perform Schubert’s profoundly moving, posthumously assembled and published song cycle Schwanengesang (Swan Song). To open the program, pianist Kirill Gerstein, violinist William Hagen, and cellist Peter Stumpf play one of Beethoven’s most extraordinary works: the groundbreaking Archduke Trio, written toward the end of the composer’s famous “heroic” era.

Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, the dramatic and compelling “Funeral” Symphony, opens the concert before Elisabeth Leonskaja joins us for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major. The programme concludes with Schubert’s Symphony No. 5, a youthful masterpiece inspired by Mozart and Haydn, full of warmth, clarity and melodic beauty.

In this intimate presentation, Schubert’s great song cycle, Winterreise, will be framed by three companion pieces — performed by 2026 Resident Artists — that serve as musical bookends and reflection points along the journey. The result will be a richly layered evening of music that reflects on solitude, longing, and memory.

Two charming works open this program, which is then brought to a fiery conclusion with one of the most powerful works in the chamber music repertoire. Getting things started is the lyrical late-18th-century Flute Trio, Op. 61, No. 5, by French Classical composer and flute virtuoso François Devienne, who was known in his day as “The Mozart of the Flute.” Next, violist Paul Neubauer and pianist Nicolas Namoradze play Schubert’s much-loved Arpeggione Sonata, whose nickname is a nod to the six-stringed, bowed guitar that was (briefly) popular in the early 19th century and that Schubert originally wrote the work for. To close out the evening, Alan Gilbert, on violin, leads Festival musicians in Shostakovich’s stunning Piano Quintet, which, being very much a product of its time, takes listeners on a wild emotional journey.

Schubert wondered how he could follow in the pianistic footsteps of Beethoven. In the end, he found a way – following that composer’s terse intensity with a world of lyrical expanse, mining emotional complexity through technical simplicity. An icon among pianists, Elisabeth Leonskaja, comes to the festival to traverse Schubert’s world from the dreamy but turbulent B major sonata to the abysmal melancholy of his penultimate work in the form and the peak of the composer’s vision of the Impromptu.

We invite you to listen to the incendiary cello music at Paliesius Manor! Augustas Gocentas will perform – a Lithuanian cellist, born into a musical family in Vilnius. He began studying the cello at the MK Čiurlionis School in the class of Ramutė Kalnėnaitė, and also studied piano for eleven years in the class of Jūratė Rudaitienė. The cellist received his bachelor's and master's degrees at the Sibelius Academy and in 2024 became a member of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.

German-born Rolf Schulte, whom The New Yorker has called “one of the most distinguished violinists of our day,” started playing the violin at age five under his father’s tutelage. He later studied with Kurt Schäffer at the Robert Schumann Institute in Düsseldorf, attended Yehudi Menuhin’s summer course in Gstaad, Switzerland, and studied with Franco Gulli at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena before moving to the United States to study with Ivan Galamian at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. At age 16, he made his orchestral debut with the Philharmonia Hungarica in Cologne, playing Mendelssohn’s Concerto. Under the auspices of Young Concert Artists he gave his New York debut at Town Hall to great acclaim.

Even if it starts with the folk-song text "To wander is the miller’s delight," Schubert's cycle Die schöne Müllerin is not a collection of innocuous  traditional songs. Instead, we have before us possibly the most beautiful early Romantic opera, albeit in miniature format. A man breaks down because of unrequited love. This octet version combining string quartet, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, an ensemble invented by Schubert, paints the existential drama in even more vivid colors.

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces represent the composer's spiritual testament and achieve unprecedented dramatic power – from the poignant lyricism of the Ave Maria to the monumentality of the Te Deum . They will be performed by the Chorus of the Montpellier National Opera, prepared by Noëlle Gény. In counterpoint, Schubert's Symphony No. 5 , composed at the age of 19 in the euphoria of his discovery of Mozart, embodies a vibrant homage to Viennese classicism. Under the sensitive direction of Italian conductor Clelia Cafiero, the strings dialogue with Mozartian transparency, while the woodwinds bring a pastoral hue to this youthful work that adopts romantic harmonic colors. Between fervor and light, an evening where the sacred is by turns intimate and grandiose.

Franz Schubert was only 18 years old when he composed his Third Symphony – a fresh, sparkling work that exudes romantic warmth and sensitivity. It opens a programme offering varying perspectives on Austrian music. Richard Strauss cleverly adapted Vienna’s waltz tradition in his opera Der Rosenkavalier; Franz Welser-Möst conducts the orchestral suite. The programme also features Bernd Richard Deutsch, an important Austrian composer of our time. His work Intensity is sonorous and poignant.

A finale with two masterpieces. Who doesn't know and love Schubert's only piano quintet with its famous variation movement on the "capricious trout"? The song's cheerful tone imbues the entire quintet with an aura of carefree musical joy, to which its bright, luminous sound also contributes. In stark contrast, this is preceded by Brahms's long-matured, final piano quartet, which reflects deep biographical conflicts. It is among the most impressive chamber music of the Romantic era. When he sent the final version to his publisher, Brahms once jokingly suggested that the edition of the score should include a picture of the composer "in a Werther costume"—an allusion to Goethe's despairing suicide victim, as well as a reflection on the lingering effects of his more than 20-year-long turmoil in his love triangle with Clara and Robert Schumann.

4. Chamber Music in Strausberg – String Quartet and Clarinet Quintet

Alexander Malofeev's debut was brilliant! The pianist stepped in for the ill Evgeny Kissin at a concert of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra - and the audience could hardly contain itself. The Frankfurt audience rewarded Malofeev's virtuoso playing with thunderous applause, not so much for its power as for its melody and transparency. It was high time for the 23-year-old to give a recital at the Alte Oper. Malofeev readily admits that he feels most at home alone on stage. He then gives an insight into his world of sound: "It's always my own space, even when hundreds of people are listening. I let them in. I like to create my own space. In the Mozart Hall, Malofeev creates a sound space that spans Scandinavia, France, Vienna and his Russian homeland: Characteristic pieces glowing in intense colours.

"Here, alongside impulsive unconditionality, one also hears ghostly sounds, the most delicate details, and breathtaking filigree work." – the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper can hardly contain its enthusiasm in its review of the groundbreaking recording of Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin" (The Beautiful Miller's Daughter), which star tenor Julian Prégardien and fortepiano expert Kristian Bezuidenhout presented in 2024. With their reinterpretation of this famous song cycle, the two transform the small hall of the Elbphilharmonie into a chamber of beautiful lovemaking.

Chamber music icons in the former Rothschild orangery. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester) presents three captivating trios by Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, and Schubert at the premiere of its "Chamber Flicker" series in the historic pavilion in Frankfurt's Günthersburgpark. An early stroke of genius by the young Shostakovich meets a musical gem from the late Schubert and Rachmaninoff's melancholic "Trio élégiaque No. 1." Shostakovich was just 17 when he composed his Piano Trio, which was only published from his posthumous manuscripts in 1983. Schubert's Piano Trio is one of his last and most mature works, which, according to Robert Schumann, swept over the musical scene of the time "like an angry apparition from heaven."

Every season deserves a finale that means something. This one is built around two opposing ideas: the perfect ending and the impossible one.

Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony stops mid-sentence. Two movements, then nothing. He never explained why. The most famous incomplete work in the repertoire — and arguably the most perfect, because its silence says everything the notes can't. It opens the evening like a question.

Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony closes it with the answer. The final movement is the most architecturally elaborate thing Mozart ever wrote: five themes, running simultaneously, woven into a fugue so dense and so inevitable that when it ends, it feels like the only possible conclusion to anything — the season, the year, music itself. Beethoven heard it and spent a decade trying to write something as good.

Together they make an argument: some things need to stay open. Some things need to close properly. A great season finale knows which is which. After the final chord, drinks will be served in the foyer. You are not required to leave quickly.

Jean Sibelius's Violin Concerto is infused with the spirit of Finnish nature - you can see the mist rising over dark lakes, hear the echoes of deep forests and feel the biting cold of the rugged landscape in every note of this chillingly beautiful work. Artist in residence Bomsori Kim will bring the slow rhythms of nature to life with her masterful violin playing, under the baton of chief conductor Jun Märkl.
