Despite its timelessness, the music of the great Romantic composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828) can sound completely 'contemporary' when heard through the ears of Hans Zender. In his 'composed interpretation', Zender - for many years a central figure in Frankfurt's musical life as a composer, conductor and university lecturer - has liberated 'Winterreise', composed in 1827, from the dignified atmosphere of the concert hall and restaged it as an existential world theatre for voice and small orchestra with a disconcerting power of sound. The Ensemble Modern was involved in the premiere at the Alte Oper in 1993, but Julian Prégardien is now also an intimate connoisseur of the score. The celebrated tenor has sung the vocal part not only on stage but also in the recording studio, delighting audiences and critics alike. It would be difficult to find a more expert interpretation of Zender's 'Winterreise' than this.

This season, members of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) will present two masterpieces of chamber music at the Theater Altes Hallenbad in Friedberg. Who doesn't know and love Schubert's only piano quintet, with its famous variation movement on the "capricious trout"? The song's cheerful tone imbues the entire quintet with an aura of unbridled musical joy, to which its bright, luminous sound also contributes. In stark contrast, the program begins with Brahms's long-matured, final piano quartet, which reflects profound biographical conflicts. It is among the most impressive chamber music of the Romantic era.

Violinist Maxim Vengerov is one of the truly great classical stars of our time. In addition to performing on the world’s leading stages, he is also a guest professor at both the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland and the Royal College of Music in London. A virtuosic horn concerto by the young Strauss, framed by a lighthearted Schubert symphony and Mendelssohn's overture about the beautiful mermaid who leaves her mermaid realm to live happily with her knight. Franz Schubert's Fifth Symphony is a surprise: light, elegant, and almost chamber-music-like in its transparency, it stands out clearly from his other symphonies – delicate rather than weighty, thoughtful rather than dramatic. No wonder it is often called "the lovely one." In this moderated concert for school classes in grades 8 to 10, solo bassoonist Theo Plath, together with the hr Symphony Orchestra, takes a close look at the work. How does a symphony with such a lean instrumentation work? Where does Schubert's refinement shine through? A focused look at a masterpiece straddling the Classical and Romantic periods – compact, sonorous, and to the point.

To mark the significant anniversary of the Reformation in Hesse, which the Protestant Church will celebrate in 2026, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) will perform a celebratory concert in Homberg (Efze) under the direction of Austrian conductor Katharina Wincor. The program at St. Mary's Church will feature a virtuosic horn concerto by the young Richard Strauss, performed by hr-Sinfonieorchester's solo horn player Kristian Katzenberger, as well as two captivating orchestral overtures by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The orchestra will also present the Fifth Symphony by Franz Schubert as the main symphonic work of the concert.

Who knew Haydn and hot cross buns might be related? “The Father of the Symphony”, Haydn’s staggering 104 symphonies are a legacy of brilliance. His final work, Symphony No. 104, known as The London Symphony, first dazzled audiences in 1795. Some have linked its finale to London street tunes, but its melodic roots lie in Haydn’s Austro-Croatian heritage, not the bakery aisle. We then descend into darker corners with Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, known as his ‘Unfinished Symphony’, with only two movements, this piece takes the listener on an emotional journey that feels altogether complete.

The Desert Community Orchestra will perform Nations, Narratives, and Cultures concert at Burrough High School Parker Performing Arts Center. The concert will present powerful musical voices of Europe and the Americas, highlighting nation-building and cultural identity through iconic orchestral works. Featured is Schubert’s Symphony in B minor, The Unfinished Symphony, Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, a celebrated symbol of Mexican music and culture. Sibelius’s Finlandia, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, and Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5.

Andrew Loveland, from Los Angeles California, will be conducting. He is a Guatemalan-American cellist and conductor from Los Angeles, CA. With over ten years of performing and teaching experience, Mr. Loveland brings a unique experience to his interpretations and performances on the podium.

"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann . Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. Ranging from the Baroque to the present day, with a special focus on the Romantic period, "The Fantastic" will be explored with a variety of chamber music works in diverse ensembles.

It is and remains a musical mystery: Schubert’s String Trio D 471, a fascinating fragment of a work which, although it remained unfinished, provides a deep insight into the composer’s melodic inventiveness and harmonic sensibility. Only the first movement is complete. The Andante sostenuto, which has only survived in fragmentary form and is rarely heard, although only 39 bars long, gives an idea of the further musical ideas Franz Schubert harboured for this trio. In the middle of the programme are two works for violin and violoncello that were written around 100 years apart: Maurice Ravel’s colourful sonata »A la mémoire de Claude Debussy« and the world premiere of a new work by David Philip Hefti, which was written especially for Hellen Weiß and Gabriel Schwabe.

Pianist Imogen Cooper is a peerless Schubertian and is highly regarded as both a soloist and chamber musician. A regular performer at Wigmore Hall, this recital follows her recital of Schubert’s Impromptus with the addition of two arrangements of Bach, by Kempff and Busoni, and Beethoven’s Bagatelles. For more than 50 years, he has been immersed in the sound world of Johann Sebastian Bach, and even his own name carries an almost magical resonance: Philippe Herreweghe, the Belgian conductor whose music of every era sounds so incredibly clear and elegant. Accordingly, there was considerable excitement when, a few years ago, he declared that he was now "a bit tired of Bach." All the more valuable, then, are the programs that allow one to encounter Philippe Herreweghe and Bach together – as here, with the B minor Suite featuring the popular "Badinerie" and the soprano solo cantata "Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut" (My Heart Swims in Blood), featuring the renowned Dorothee Mields, known for her slender and beautiful soprano. For Philippe Herreweghe, one thing was always clear: he absolutely did not want to be reduced to being a Baroque conductor. That, he says, would be "like an actor only declaiming Shakespeare or Molière. The more I do Bruckner, the better I understand Bach, and vice versa." "That's a good interplay." Not Bruckner, but Franz Schubert is now on his "Baroque+" program, specifically the so-called "unfinished" symphony. Here, too, he will rely entirely on the virtues of clarity and the meticulous attention to detail that make his interpretations so profound. "Others," says Herreweghe, "defend their interpretative freedom, but that's just false routine. I defend the score."

Schubert wrote nine symphonies but never heard them performed. His great C major symphony was first performed in Leipzig in 1839 by Mendelssohn, after Schumann found the score in Vienna. At the time it was considered difficult to play, but today we enjoy its beauty. Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto was written almost 30 years earlier and premiered by himself in 1803. The concerto is very reminiscent of the introduction to Mozart's Twenty-fourth Piano Concerto in the same key, C minor. Beethoven knew and admired it well, and perhaps the introduction is a kind of homage to his great predecessor.

Schubert wrote nine symphonies but never got to hear them performed. The great C major symphony was not performed for the first time until ten years after Schubert's death. It was Robert Schumann who obtained the score during a visit to Vienna in 1838 and Schumann's friend Felix Mendelssohn who conducted the premiere in Leipzig in 1839. Today it is not so easy to understand that the musicians of the time considered the symphony too difficult to play and complicated, but with today's ears we can only sit back and enjoy all the beauty contained in this magnificent work.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

The world-famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs four of the most celebrated and richly textured pieces in orchestral repertoire in the first of two Sunday afternoon concerts.

The celebratory outer movements of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C embrace a glowing Andante forever associated with the romantic tragedy of the Swedish film Elvira Madigan.

Schubert’s Eighth Symphony is the best known of all his orchestral music, despite its famously – and mysteriously – unfinished state, in which darkly ominous yearning bursts into radiant optimism.

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis perhaps defined Vaughan Williams’ musical personality. Applying to a Tudor theme an admixture of English folksong and translucent orchestral textures learnt in Paris, Vaughan Williams achieved alchemy; a century on, the Fantasia is an established classic, from luminous opening chords to ecstatic counterpoint.

That's what you call fate: While the bassoon is featured prominently as a soloist in many symphonies and operas, explicit solo concertos for this particularly dark woodwind instrument are rare. Carl Maria von Weber, the composer of the rather dark opera "Der Freischütz," wrote a bassoon concerto in 1811: an ideal playing field for the French bassoonist Marceau Lefèvre. The Italian conductor and pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell frames Weber's rarely heard gem with timeless works: Wagner's Ringfarbige Musik der Freude über seinen neuen Sohn Siegfried (Ring-colored Music of Joy over His Newborn Son Siegfried), and Schubert's arguably best-known and unfinished symphony, whose two movements are among the finest of the entire 19th century.

The quartet’s numerous awards include a stunning sweep of all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, grand and first prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. The group’s 2024-25 season included collaborative performances with preeminent artists including pianists Michelle Cann, Marc-André Hamelin, and Haochen Zhang, as well as premiere performances of works by Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate (‘90), a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and a leading composer of American Indian classical music.

Destitute and directionless, Australian musician Nick Cave arrived in West Berlin in the 1980s, plunging himself into the city’s drug scene and emerging as an underground legend. His 1988 album Tender Prey, created with The Bad Seeds during his Berlin years, now undergoes a romantic symphonic synthesis as part of the Schall&Rausch festival. In the subterranean chamber of the former Kindl brewery, the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin – under the baton of Music Director James Gaffigan – juxtaposes the pitch-black death wish of a post-punk junkie against the world-weariness of Franz Schubert’s lonely wanderer. Songs of futility and farewell from Schubert’s 1827 song cycle Winterreise, in Hans Zender’s orchestral arrangement, resonate with a sharp chill as they repeatedly pierce through Nick Cave’s brooding soundtrack.

A program that begins in silence, almost in white noise. And that ends in the ecstasy of sound. In Scriabin's mystery music, everything dissolves in a visionary orchestral explosion of color – it was "like an ice bath, cocaine, and rainbows." It was the writer Henry Miller who once raved about "Le poème de l'extase" with this comparison. Premiered in New York in 1908, the music world had never experienced anything like it, and even today this music catapults the audience into a parallel universe. In his concert with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, conductor Oscar Jockel builds the effect layer by layer: After his own meticulously composed nothingness, the simplicity of Schubert's four-hand Fantasy in F minor seems like an intimate secret, the contrasts intensifying with Britten's "Scottish Ballad." Then Debussy's "Jeux" sheds new light – as the conductor says – on the ecstasy of the love dance, with its lively melodies and dissonant harmonies soaring upwards in triple meter. Finally, the "absolute sublimation" is achieved with Scriabin, who, as a trained philosopher, explored not only musical realms of the barely comprehensible.

Founded in 1997 in Madrid, Cuarteto Casals regularly performs in the world’s most prestigious concert halls since winning First Prizes at the London and Brahms-Hamburg competitions. We begin with a quartet by Spanish Basque child prodigy Arriaga, revealing a unique sound modeled after Hadyn and Mozart. Next we hear an exciting work commissioned in 2024 from Spanish-American composer Elisenda Fábregas, The evening ends with Schubert’s harmonically innovative and final quartet, widely considered his greatest and most challenging.

Slade Trammell, pianist, M.M., has been heard in concert across the U.S. and in Europe, including local performances with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Roane Choral Society, and appearances in Salzburg, Paris, and Toronto. He studied under pianists Earl Wild, Ruth Slenczynska, and David Brunell. Also a conductor, with many years of study under Serge Fournier, he is a graduate in conducting (with distinction in score reading) of the European American Musical Alliance Summer Institute in Paris. Since 2012, Mr. Trammell has served as pianist for Roane Choral Society. He also serves on faculty at Hiwasee College.

The title of his latest PCMS program, Fancies and Goodnights, is borrowed from a book of bewitching tales by the English writer John Collier. “As a curious traveler will collect objects that catch hiseye, these short pieces are among the many that have caught my ear with their beauty, strangeness, and unpredictability,” says Goode.

The staggeringly talented Augustin Hadelich sets his sights on Mendelssohn’s treasured Violin Concerto, seizing our attention from the iconic introduction all the way through its breathless finale. Conductor Antonello Manacorda also leads Schoenberg’s hyper-romantic Second Chamber Symphony, which took 33 years to be completed, and Schubert’s Eighth Symphony, which famously never was ... though that hasn’t kept the beloved “Unfinished” from its celebrated place in the repertoire.

A major chapter in string quartet history is coming to a close: After more than 40 years as an ensemble, the Hagen Quartet is entering its final season. They bring a program to the Elbphilharmonie that revives the highlights of recent decades with works by Mozart, Schubert, and Weber.

One of the most distinctive artists and polymaths of his generation, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career as a pianist with those of a composer and writer. The first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, Hough is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance from Northwestern University, the Royal Philharmonic Instrumentalist Award, and first prize at the Naumburg Competition. In 2014, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Hough has performed with most of the major European, Asian, and American orchestras and regularly plays recitals in major halls, concert series, and festivals around the world. His catalogue of over sixty albums has garnered prizes such as the Diapason d’Or de l’Année, Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, several Grammy nominations, and eight Gramophone awards, including the “Gold Disc” Award, which named his complete Saint-Saëns Piano Concertos as the best recording of the past thirty years. As a composer, Hough has written commissions for institutions such as the Cliburn, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Wigmore Hall. Hough holds the International Chair of Piano Studies at Manchester’s Royal Northern College and is a faculty member at the Juilliard School.
