With this program, the orchestra wants to give its audience a real Christmas present. In the program, we have tried to collect the most beautiful Christmas melodies and the most famous Christmas songs. Everything from Sibelius' Christmas Carol, Koppången and Klang min vackra bjällra , to Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, which are also included in the program. To help us, we have Norrköping-born Olle Persson as soloist and the choirs Bel Canto and Musikaliska Sällskapets Kammarkör. It almost couldn't get better. Here you really get the chance to fill up on all the energy and Christmas spirit needed for the holidays.

American tenor Matthew Polenzani delivered an unforgettable recital during his spring 2024 PCMS appearance, captivating audiences and prompting enthusiastic requests for his return. For his highly anticipated encore, Polenzani will be joined by pianist Ken Noda in a performance culminating with Schubert’s Schwanengesang (“Swan Song”). Composed in the final months of Schubert’s life, this haunting collection of 14 songs, widely regarded as one of his most profound creations, explores themes of longing and loss, with the presence of a distant beloved lingering throughout.

Artists in Residence Lucas & Arthur Jussen will be performing chamber music, presenting captivating works for two pianos or pianists. The program ranges from the vibrant and moving Schubert movements to the rhythmic fire of Béla Bartók and the Romanticism of Robert Schumann. Bartók impressively showcased the secret affinity between the sound of two pianos and percussion in his famous sonata. For piano four-hands, however, the early Romantic Schubert left behind more than any other great composer: among other things, the most monumental sonata movement for piano four-hands we know: a stormily beginning, almost grim Allegro, which later inspired the publisher to title it "Life's Storms." Yet here, too, the heavens open – with one of those harmonic turns with which the late Schubert repeatedly transports his listeners to another world. The same is true of his single Adagio Trio movement, in which time seems to stand still.

The second installment of Noe Music’s Piano Portraits series features Inon Barnatan, “one of the most admired pianists of his generation” (The New York Times), known for his poetic sensibility and fearless virtuosity. In an afternoon that highlights the expressive range of the piano, Barnatan performs an all-Schubert program, including the Impromptu in F minor (D.935/1) and the towering Sonata in B-flat major (D.960). He is joined by co-Artistic Director and violinist Owen Dalby for the composer’s radiant Fantasy in C major for violin and piano (D.934). A must-hear concert with one of today’s true keyboard poets.

The Hamburg Doctors’ Orchestra is mainly made up of doctors and musicians from medical professions. The orchestra was founded in 1964 and performs for charitable purposes: for example, to support the work of the Hamburg Hospice Foundation.

No other contemporary singer's name is as synonymous with the Lied as that of Julian Prégardien. Although also impressive on the operatic stage and in oratorios with his deeply sensitive tenor, the German singer reveals himself particularly intensely in the lyrical, poetic, and romantic genre of the Lied. He repeatedly delves into this cosmos, especially with songs by Schubert, but also by other composers who are at home in this field. To ensure that an orchestra like the CAMERATA—known for its vocal sound and chamber music sensitivity—can also perform in the area of ​​Lieder normally reserved for piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements of two Lied compositions by Beethoven and Schubert were selected. Isabelle Faust, one of the most impressive violinists of our time, sums it up: "It's always about conveying the magic of music in the moment." The current "Artist in Residence" of the WDR Symphony Orchestra presents Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Violin Concerto in this concert. The work has everything that makes the hearts of music fans beat faster: warming lyricism, breathtaking virtuosity, and intoxicating sonic splendor. Robert Schumann was a close friend of Mendelssohn. Isabelle Faust also interprets his exciting violin fantasy, before Schubert's mysterious "Unfinished" concludes the concert, conducted by the British conductor Andrew Manze.

The renowned Fauré Quartet expands its sound palette with the Finnish double bass player Janne Saksala, soloist and principal double bass of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2008. Beethoven's piano concertos and symphonies belong to the core of orchestral repertoire but it's some time since we've heard his 2nd piano concerto, in which echoes of Mozart can be heard. Schubert composed his first six symphonies before his 20th birthday, although during his lifetime they were only performed in private circles. His 2nd symphony was probably performed for the first time in 1877. While Brahms found them interesting Dvořák was very taken with their melodies, harmonic progressions and the exquisite detail in Schubert's orchestration.

A cherished presence on Washington Performing Arts stages, Midori returns with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute for a program that traverses lyricism, passion, and brilliance. Anchored by Beethoven’s radiant “Spring” Sonata, the recital interweaves romantic nuance in the works of Clara and Robert Schumann, Poulenc’s bold contrasts, and the virtuosic sweep of Schubert’s Rondo Brillante—all brought to life with Midori’s musical insight and expressive power. A new work written for Midori by New York-based violinist and composer Che Buford combines violin and electronics. Buford describes their compositions as exploring the possibilities of timbre and acoustical phenomena and connecting them to elements of place, memory, poetry, and the quotidian.

From Schubert in the early 19th century to Sibelius 100 years later, the Romantic composers were fascinated by the strange and the exotic, by the unfamiliar and the otherworldly. Mendelssohn travelled to the remote Atlantic islands of Scotland where he was inspired to write his Hebrides overture, mimicking the sound of the sea and the wailing of ancient bagpipes. In his violin concerto, Sibelius caught the incantations of Finnish folk music and the wailing of wind in the northern forests. And Schubert’s last and greatest symphony was considered so long and so strange by his contemporaries, it lay unperformed for years. Now it is one of the central works of Western classical music. As Robert Schumann wrote, after its first performance: “This symphony opens an entirely new world to us, producing such an effect on us as none has produced since Beethoven”.

The titular creatures whom Prometheus brings to life represent humanity itself, and Beethoven responded to the story of their enlightenment with engaging, sunny music.

An exuberant joie de vivre characterizes Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Symphony No. 4, which he began composing in Rome and Naples. Franz Schubert's budget never allowed a trip to Italy—but at least Italian opera was performed in Vienna. He supposedly bet his friends that he could compose overtures as lively as Rossini's, and subsequently created the overture "in the Italian style." Busoni's brilliant comedy overture also follows in the tradition of Rossini, but uses a late-Romantic orchestra, while Richard Strauss wrote his melancholic, serene oboe concerto for a deliberately small ensemble.

Clara Schumann was a formidable character – a phenomenally gifted pianist, brilliant composer, editor of her husband Robert Schumann’s compositions and key supporter of Brahms, her contribution to the world of music is vast. The first half of this concert celebrates Clara herself, first in Gabriela Ortiz’s Clara, a musical telling of the story of her relationship with Robert, and then in her own Piano Concerto, a dancing, dazzling tour-de-force. The acclaimed Verona Quartet, among the most distinguished ensembles on the chamber music scene today, makes its return appearance in our series with a program inspired by songs. The Schubert and Mendelssohn string quartets take their inspiration from their own songs “Death and the Maiden” and “Ist es wahr?”. George Walker wrote his “Lyric” for string quartet after his graduation from Oberlin Conservatory (where the Verona Quartet are in residence) based on the lyrical sound of the human voice and spirit. Canadian singer and songwriter Tanya Tagaq uses an ingenious imagination of imparting traditional Inuk throat singing onto the sound of western string instruments.

Matthias Goerne is one of the world’s most versatile and sought-after vocalists, known for his powerful performances and recordings of Schubert. He has appeared on the world’s principal opera stages, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York; the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and the Vienna State Opera. Grammy Award-winning pianist Daniil Trifonov has made a spectacular ascent of the classical music world, as a solo artist, champion of the concerto repertoire, and chamber and vocal collaborator. A rare chance to hear Trifonov perform solo and in collaboration with Goerne for the beauty and pathos, drama and despair of the Schwanengesang, or Swan Songs, composed in Schubert’s last year.

For her seventh solo recital with PCMS, British pianist Imogen Cooper returns to Perelman Theater for an evening of works that showcases her stunning virtuosity, graceful lyricism, and poetic interpretations. Among the finest interpreters of the Classical and Romantic repertoire, Cooper presents a recital that includes both sets of Schubert’s impromptus—eight “Poems in Sound” that are flowing, evocative, and reflective of the rhythms of the heart and soul of life itself.

Beethoven, Brahms, Bach – these have been Igor Levit's most important companions in recent years. The fact that his new program includes sonatas by Franz Schubert and Frédéric Chopin alongside Robert Schumann's Nocturnes is a cause for concern. "There are composers I prefer to listen to rather than play," Levit declared for many years when it came to Chopin. Of course, as probably every trained pianist does, he studied his etudes and sonatas during his studies, but this exploration only rarely found its way into the public eye. Until now! The third sonata, which Chopin himself called a "concerto without an orchestra," forms the significant climax of his piano recital at the Elbphilharmonie.
