Beethoven's piano concertos and symphonies belong to the core of orchestral repertoire but it's some time since we've heard his 2nd piano concerto, in which echoes of Mozart can be heard. Schubert composed his first six symphonies before his 20th birthday, although during his lifetime they were only performed in private circles. His 2nd symphony was probably performed for the first time in 1877. While Brahms found them interesting Dvořák was very taken with their melodies, harmonic progressions and the exquisite detail in Schubert's orchestration.

A cherished presence on Washington Performing Arts stages, Midori returns with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute for a program that traverses lyricism, passion, and brilliance. Anchored by Beethoven’s radiant “Spring” Sonata, the recital interweaves romantic nuance in the works of Clara and Robert Schumann, Poulenc’s bold contrasts, and the virtuosic sweep of Schubert’s Rondo Brillante—all brought to life with Midori’s musical insight and expressive power. A new work written for Midori by New York-based violinist and composer Che Buford combines violin and electronics. Buford describes their compositions as exploring the possibilities of timbre and acoustical phenomena and connecting them to elements of place, memory, poetry, and the quotidian.

Beethoven's piano sonatas are profound explorations of the great themes of music, life, and human existence. They are among the greatest masterpieces in the history of music and reflect both his personal journey and the evolution of music. For his concert, Víkingur Ólafsson has chosen Sonatas No. 27 and 30. The latter is considered one of the summit works of piano literature. It combines clarity and depth, and especially the second movement, a meditative Adagio, allows space for intimate reflection, while the finale, with its varying themes, showcases Beethoven's creativity. Beethoven's great predecessor, Johann Sebastian Bach, and one of his famous successors, Franz Schubert, are also featured in the program with other works, highlighting significant events in European piano music. From Schubert in the early 19th century to Sibelius 100 years later, the Romantic composers were fascinated by the strange and the exotic, by the unfamiliar and the otherworldly. Mendelssohn travelled to the remote Atlantic islands of Scotland where he was inspired to write his Hebrides overture, mimicking the sound of the sea and the wailing of ancient bagpipes. In his violin concerto, Sibelius caught the incantations of Finnish folk music and the wailing of wind in the northern forests. And Schubert’s last and greatest symphony was considered so long and so strange by his contemporaries, it lay unperformed for years. Now it is one of the central works of Western classical music. As Robert Schumann wrote, after its first performance: “This symphony opens an entirely new world to us, producing such an effect on us as none has produced since Beethoven”.

An exuberant joie de vivre characterizes Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Symphony No. 4, which he began composing in Rome and Naples. Franz Schubert's budget never allowed a trip to Italy—but at least Italian opera was performed in Vienna. He supposedly bet his friends that he could compose overtures as lively as Rossini's, and subsequently created the overture "in the Italian style." Busoni's brilliant comedy overture also follows in the tradition of Rossini, but uses a late-Romantic orchestra, while Richard Strauss wrote his melancholic, serene oboe concerto for a deliberately small ensemble.

The acclaimed Verona Quartet, among the most distinguished ensembles on the chamber music scene today, makes its return appearance in our series with a program inspired by songs. The Schubert and Mendelssohn string quartets take their inspiration from their own songs “Death and the Maiden” and “Ist es wahr?”. George Walker wrote his “Lyric” for string quartet after his graduation from Oberlin Conservatory (where the Verona Quartet are in residence) based on the lyrical sound of the human voice and spirit. Canadian singer and songwriter Tanya Tagaq uses an ingenious imagination of imparting traditional Inuk throat singing onto the sound of western string instruments.

Grammy Award-winning pianist Daniil Trifonov has made a spectacular ascent of the classical music world, as a solo artist, champion of the concerto repertoire, and chamber and vocal collaborator. A rare chance to hear Trifonov perform solo and in collaboration with Goerne for the beauty and pathos, drama and despair of the Schwanengesang, or Swan Songs, composed in Schubert’s last year.

Beethoven, Brahms, Bach – these have been Igor Levit's most important companions in recent years. The fact that his new program includes sonatas by Franz Schubert and Frédéric Chopin alongside Robert Schumann's Nocturnes is a cause for concern. "There are composers I prefer to listen to rather than play," Levit declared for many years when it came to Chopin. Of course, as probably every trained pianist does, he studied his etudes and sonatas during his studies, but this exploration only rarely found its way into the public eye. Until now! The third sonata, which Chopin himself called a "concerto without an orchestra," forms the significant climax of his piano recital at the Elbphilharmonie.

From its atmospheric beginning, Le Silence des Sirènes evokes vivid imagery of ill-fated ships on top of great, swelling waves: the score is alive with crashing percussion and warning brass interjections, the enigmatic sirens’ song provided by Faustine de Monès. Unsuk Chin drew upon several classical sources for the work, including Homer, Joyce and – most notably – Kafka, whose short story gave the work its name. Britten’s Four Sea Interludes opens the programme: orchestral ‘scene changes’ from his opera Peter Grimes conveying the changing mood of the storytelling, but always with an atmospheric undercurrent of foreboding. Schubert’s majestic Symphony No.9 will round off the evening, with conductor Elena Schwarz showing us exactly why it’s known as ‘The Great’.

"A work like something from another world" – this is how critic Joachim Kaiser describes Franz Schubert's String Quintet in C major. Romantic depths, visions and novel, »unheard-of« sounds in perfect form: Schubert can be considered one of the most innovative composers in music history. This is particularly evident in the selection of works performed in this concert, all of which date from Schubert’s mature period.

Although violin and cello are essentially siblings, there were no significant double concertos for these two instruments before Brahms. He actually only wrote one because he had two special artist colleagues in mind for whom he wanted to compose something: the famous violinist Joseph Joachim and the cellist Robert Hausmann. However, it was a complete success, and today the concerto is among the most popular and frequently performed of its kind. Completed unfinished - that's how one could also call Franz Schubert's Symphony in B minor, because even without the "missing" movements, it is a masterpiece. Moreover, it is full of secrets. To this day, it is not known why Schubert did not finish it, nor why a friend kept it locked away for 40 years. It is also unknown why Schubert wrote it in the key of B minor, which was unusual in his time. However, all of this does not diminish the work, on the contrary, with each listening one can discover something new and be amazed.

Spohr, Weber, Schubert, and Haydn—four titans of Classical-Romantic music history! Undoubtedly, they were pioneers in their respective musical paths, intuitively grasping the trends of their time and laying the foundations for future generations of composers. One thing is certain, however: without the others, they would probably not have existed, nor would they have achieved the virtuoso brilliance for which they are still celebrated today. A mutual influence was clearly present and contributed to the development of the musical landscape of their time. One example of this interaction is the connection between Franz Schubert and Carl Maria von Weber. Although they took different musical paths, as contemporaries they shared a common era of transition from Viennese Classicism to Romanticism. Schubert, inspired by Weber's operas, incorporated some of his ideas into his songs and music-dramatic works, thus coming closer to the Romantic ideal of musical expression.

Hans Graf brings “a brave new world of music-making” (The Straits Times) to Schubert’s romantic Symphony No. 8, the great “Unfinished” masterwork that packs a lifetime of hope, suffering, and joy into just two perfect movements. “Spellbinding soloist” Renaud Capuçon performs Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto—a mysterious, autumnal farewell “to the memory of an angel.”

Chamber music in a small, exquisite format. This season's series opens with two string players: Schubert's Erlkönig-Lied, based on Goethe's nature-magical ballad, is performed here in a version for violin and viola – followed by a piece with a rare instrumentation: the violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini once took a Rossini melody for variations, here actually played by the solo double bass. And after the Sarabande by the Norwegian Johan Halvorsen, we arrive at Beethoven, with his early third string trio for violin, viola, and cello. The D major work exudes nothing less than the atmosphere of a pure musical idyll. A salute from the end of the 18th century, a perfect concert finale.

Schubert’s two masterful piano trios, written in the final year of his tragically short life, will be brought to life by a trio of eminent musicians who are well known to Schubert Club audiences. Audience members who attended the 2021 Schubert Revealed at the State Fairgrounds may remember the trio’s masterful performance.

The magisterial mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter has shown that her formidable powers know no bounds—from her diva status as the superlative Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) of her generation; to long associations with Carlos Kleiber, Claudio Abbado, and Sir Colin Davis, and genre-crossing collaborations with Elvis Costello, Brad Mehldau, and Rufus Wainwright.
