Six string players join forces in the Chamber Music Society’s final Harris Theater performance of the season. After beginning with Bach, who used six voices to compose his fugue-on-demand for Frederick the Great, the group divides in two for string trios by Haydn and Schubert, before re-combining in two blockbuster works for sextet by Strauss (the opening from his opera Capriccio) and Tchaikovsky (Souvenir de Florence).

American rising star violinist and protégé of the legendary Itzhak Perlman, Randall Goosby performs works by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Fauré, Chausson, and Schubert with pianist Zhu Wang at his Koerner Hall debut.

Goosby is acclaimed for the sensitivity and intensity of his musicianship alongside his determination to make music more inclusive and accessible, as well as bringing the music of under-represented composers to light. After making his debut with the Jacksonville Symphony at age nine, he performed with the New York Philharmonic at age 13 on a Young People’s Concert at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and became the youngest recipient ever to win the Sphinx Concerto Competition.

It was the conductor Paul Sacher who inspired Frank Martin to focus on an instrumentation in a concert that one would actually associate with a baroque basso continuo. In the juxtaposition of two string orchestras with soloists on harp, piano and harpsichord, Martin created a constellation that is vaguely reminiscent of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos just before the end of the Second World War.

Schubert’s Die Zauberharfe was one of his melodramas, the text of which was sadly lost. He also wrote incidental music, including an overture for a play called ‘Rosamunde’ (also lost). Partly due to so much getting mislaid, the cheerfully bustling overture to ‘Zauberharfe’ was known as ‘Rosamunde’ for decades.

Two of the best loved symphonies in all classical music is a real luxury in an evening. Florian Illies had his big breakthrough as a chronicler of the German sensibility with his first novel, Generation Golf . Most recently, his feature compilations 1913 and Love in Times of Hate have delighted audiences. These works bring the eras shortly before the world wars to life. Most recently, the trained art historian Illies turned far back into German Romanticism and, in his novel Magic of Silence, based on the life of the painter Caspar David Friedrich, traced an era of German history that bears the seeds of modernity. He presents Friedrich as a painter of God-fearing inwardness on the edge of the abyss of abstraction. The symphony concert Sound of Silence provides the soundtrack and shows that Friedrich was not the only one to take this artistic path.

A major highlight in each of Carnegie Hall’s past three seasons has been the Danish String Quartet’s Doppelgänger project, in which the ensemble pairs a Schubert string-quartet masterpiece with a new work inspired by it. The quartet’s most recent performance was described by The New York Times as “ensemble music at its finest.” The Danish String Quartet now concludes the four-year series by pairing Schubert’s towering String Quartet in G Major with a New York premiere by Bent Sørensen. When this program premiered at Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, critics raved that “Sørensen’s work will surely assimilate into the classic repertoire” (Bachtrack).

And the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival has awarded Anastasia Kobekina its 2024 Leonard Bernstein Award, which honors internationally outstanding young musicians. Her meteoric international career has taken the musician, who has been playing the cello since she was four, to the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the National Orchestra d'Ile de France and artists such as Krzysztov Penderecki, Jakub Hrusa and Paavo Järvi. The Tchaikovsky Prize winner plays a cello by Antonio Stradivari from 1698, which was provided to her by the Stradivari Foundation Habisreutinger. With the BSOF she interprets one of the most charming and moving works in cello literature: Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor.

For nearly 40 years, Carnegie Hall audiences have filled Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage to hear the grand dame of the violin, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and her brilliant recital partner, pianist Lambert Orkis. Following their 2019 recital, critics described this duo as “timeless ... one of the great recital teams,” calling Mutter’s enduring greatness across generations “a privilege to witness” (New York Classical Review). In this concert, they perform a spectacular selection of violin-and-piano repertoire that spans nearly 150 years from the 18th to 20th centuries.

Clara Schumann's Flower Album serves as the starting point for this evening. She collected dried flowers in this booklet, which she later presented to Johannes Brahms. The program revolves around the themes of love, friendship, and nature as a resonant space for emotions. Students from the mdw's Max Reinhardt Seminar will read texts by Heinrich Heine, Joseph von Eichendorff, and other Romantic poets.

The members of the Danish Quartet have an extensive history of musical collaboration. For this PCMS appearance, they bring their Doppelgänger project, an ambitious four-year international commissioning project in which four composers create new works in response to a masterwork by Franz Schubert. In this program, they pair Schubert’s transcendent final string quartet (completed months before he passed away) with Danish composer Bent Sørensen’s 2020 work Doppelgänger. “The piece is in two movements, and between and within them there are mirror effects… the only traces of Schubert in my piece are some recurring clean and pure G Major chords often transformed, as in the Schubert quartet, to G Minor” (Bent Sørensen).

Artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center perform one of the most beloved works of the chamber repertoire, Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet. Written when the composer was only 22, the piece demonstrates his genius for melodic composition, and also features unique instrumentation; unlike other piano quintets, it has only one violin and adds a double bass, giving the ensemble a rich, sonorous texture. Also on the program are works by Mozart and W. F. Bach.

Jonathan Biss is celebrated for his profoundly insightful interpretations of classical masterpieces and his ambition to bridge the gap between these timeless works and today’s audiences. In this programme, Biss pairs two of Schubert’s three last sonatas with a piece by Tyshawn Sorey.

Schubert’s huge, haunting late sonatas begin and end a recital that embraces the melancholy of William Byrd and the exquisite, untamed imagination of Janacek’s On an Overgrown Path.

When he wrote his Opus 88 in 1842, Robert Schumann initially referred to it as a piano trio, but later gave it the title "Fantasiestücke". This also fits better with the four charming character pieces, which unfold their charm in simple song forms and dance movements. While the "Fantasiestücke" were Schumann's first forays into piano trios, Franz Schubert's E-flat major trio was written in the year of the composer's death. This is not the only reason why it is a special work, which Schumann once described with admiration as an "angry celestial apparition". In the middle of this Schumann-Schubert sandwich is the piano trio by Isang Yun, which continued the history of the genre in the 20th century with its twelve-tone row.

Franz Schubert's B minor Symphony is the epitome of "not finishing" - we therefore know it as the Unfinished. It used to be called his last or Eighth Symphony, as it was only discovered more than 30 years after Schubert's death. Today it is called the Seventh, as it was written before the (completed) Great C major Symphony. We will never know why Schubert left it unfinished - he stopped working on a third movement. In any case, it would not have been easy for Schubert to follow up the marvel of the first two movements with something of equal value. Seen in this way, the Unfinished also has something complete about it.

Praised as a “rising light in the musical firmament” and a “brilliant young Maestra” Annunziata Tomaro is equally at home in symphonic, operatic and contemporary repertoire.

As founder and music director of The Phoenix Ensemble in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tomaro worked with distinguished artists such as William Bolcom and Peter Sparling. During her tenure as conductor and music director of the Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy, Ms. Tomaro led new productions of operas by Wolf-Ferrari and Puccini as well as notable concert and choral performances. In collaboration with renowned pianist James Tocco and opera director Robin Guarino, Tomaro conducted celebrated concert and opera performances at the Spoleto Festival in Italy.

Schubert’s “Great” C major Symphony is considered by many to epitomise romanticism in orchestral music. The first call of the horns is typical of the era – evoking a sound world that is at once warm, idyllic and full of yearning. Conductor Zubin Mehta has included two further Romantic works on the programme: Carl Maria von Weber’s overture to the fairy-tale opera Oberon and Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with its combination of heartfelt expression and overwhelming virtuosity. Himari, who comes from Japan and is just 13 years old, makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker as soloist.
