He began studying the cello at the MK Čiurlionis School in the class of Ramutė Kalnėnaitė, and also studied piano for eleven years in the class of Jūratė Rudaitienė. The cellist received his bachelor's and master's degrees at the Sibelius Academy and in 2024 became a member of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.

German-born Rolf Schulte, whom The New Yorker has called “one of the most distinguished violinists of our day,” started playing the violin at age five under his father’s tutelage. He later studied with Kurt Schäffer at the Robert Schumann Institute in Düsseldorf, attended Yehudi Menuhin’s summer course in Gstaad, Switzerland, and studied with Franco Gulli at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena before moving to the United States to study with Ivan Galamian at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. At age 16, he made his orchestral debut with the Philharmonia Hungarica in Cologne, playing Mendelssohn’s Concerto. Under the auspices of Young Concert Artists he gave his New York debut at Town Hall to great acclaim.

Even if it starts with the folk-song text "To wander is the miller’s delight," Schubert's cycle Die schöne Müllerin is not a collection of innocuous  traditional songs. Instead, we have before us possibly the most beautiful early Romantic opera, albeit in miniature format. A man breaks down because of unrequited love. This octet version combining string quartet, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, an ensemble invented by Schubert, paints the existential drama in even more vivid colors.

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces represent the composer's spiritual testament and achieve unprecedented dramatic power – from the poignant lyricism of the Ave Maria to the monumentality of the Te Deum . They will be performed by the Chorus of the Montpellier National Opera, prepared by Noëlle Gény. In counterpoint, Schubert's Symphony No. 5 , composed at the age of 19 in the euphoria of his discovery of Mozart, embodies a vibrant homage to Viennese classicism. Under the sensitive direction of Italian conductor Clelia Cafiero, the strings dialogue with Mozartian transparency, while the woodwinds bring a pastoral hue to this youthful work that adopts romantic harmonic colors. 4. Chamber Music in Strausberg – String Quartet and Clarinet Quintet

A finale with two masterpieces. Who doesn't know and love Schubert's only piano quintet with its famous variation movement on the "capricious trout"? The song's cheerful tone imbues the entire quintet with an aura of carefree musical joy, to which its bright, luminous sound also contributes. In stark contrast, this is preceded by Brahms's long-matured, final piano quartet, which reflects deep biographical conflicts. It is among the most impressive chamber music of the Romantic era. When he sent the final version to his publisher, Brahms once jokingly suggested that the edition of the score should include a picture of the composer "in a Werther costume"—an allusion to Goethe's despairing suicide victim, as well as a reflection on the lingering effects of his more than 20-year-long turmoil in his love triangle with Clara and Robert Schumann.

Alexander Malofeev's debut was brilliant! The pianist stepped in for the ill Evgeny Kissin at a concert of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra - and the audience could hardly contain itself. The Frankfurt audience rewarded Malofeev's virtuoso playing with thunderous applause, not so much for its power as for its melody and transparency. It was high time for the 23-year-old to give a recital at the Alte Oper. Malofeev readily admits that he feels most at home alone on stage. He then gives an insight into his world of sound: "It's always my own space, even when hundreds of people are listening. I let them in. I like to create my own space. In the Mozart Hall, Malofeev creates a sound space that spans Scandinavia, France, Vienna and his Russian homeland: Characteristic pieces glowing in intense colours.

"Here, alongside impulsive unconditionality, one also hears ghostly sounds, the most delicate details, and breathtaking filigree work." – the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper can hardly contain its enthusiasm in its review of the groundbreaking recording of Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin" (The Beautiful Miller's Daughter), which star tenor Julian Prégardien and fortepiano expert Kristian Bezuidenhout presented in 2024. With their reinterpretation of this famous song cycle, the two transform the small hall of the Elbphilharmonie into a chamber of beautiful lovemaking.

Chamber music icons in the former Rothschild orangery. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester) presents three captivating trios by Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, and Schubert at the premiere of its "Chamber Flicker" series in the historic pavilion in Frankfurt's Günthersburgpark. An early stroke of genius by the young Shostakovich meets a musical gem from the late Schubert and Rachmaninoff's melancholic "Trio élégiaque No. 1." Shostakovich was just 17 when he composed his Piano Trio, which was only published from his posthumous manuscripts in 1983. Schubert's Piano Trio is one of his last and most mature works, which, according to Robert Schumann, swept over the musical scene of the time "like an angry apparition from heaven."

Season Finale Dreaming Big

Every season deserves a finale that means something. This one is built around two opposing ideas: the perfect ending and the impossible one.

Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony stops mid-sentence. Two movements, then nothing. He never explained why. The most famous incomplete work in the repertoire — and arguably the most perfect, because its silence says everything the notes can't. It opens the evening like a question.

Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony closes it with the answer. The final movement is the most architecturally elaborate thing Mozart ever wrote: five themes, running simultaneously, woven into a fugue so dense and so inevitable that when it ends, it feels like the only possible conclusion to anything — the season, the year, music itself. Beethoven heard it and spent a decade trying to write something as good.

Together they make an argument: some things need to stay open. Some things need to close properly. A great season finale knows which is which. After the final chord, drinks will be served in the foyer. You are not required to leave quickly.

Sarasota Orchestra closes its season with a program of works that left the door open for more. No one is certain why Schubert never finished his Eighth Symphony, but the two movements that he did compose remain among his most beloved. Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra was the first work by a woman of color to be performed by the New York Philharmonic; Perry’s life and career were cut short at age 55. In his Symphony No. 45, Haydn sent a not-so subtle message to his employer that the orchestra was ready for a break. This symphony has delighted audiences for over 250 years and concludes our 76th season with a chuckle as each musician exits the stage in a dramatic send-off.

Hungarian-American pianist Julia Hamos presents a program that bridges centuries and styles and features two of the most important composers from Hungary. Beginning with a selection from Kurtág’s Játékok, she navigates through Haydn’s Sonata in E minor, Ligeti’s Études (Arc-en-ciel, Der Zauberlehrling, Fanfares), and Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, culminating in Schumann’s beloved Fantasie in C Major. Hamos’s adventurous spirit and compelling artistry promise an evening of compelling musical exploration.

Víkingur Ólafsson believes that Ludwig van Beethoven reinvented himself with the Sonata in E major, Op. 109, while at the same time paying homage to one of his great inspirations: Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as Beethoven’s “compass” for this venture into the unknown, as he puts it. The last movement of Op. 109 is a theme and variations that reveals “striking connections with the Goldberg Variations,” according to Víkingur. “Both are built on a songful Sarabande theme which comes back at the end in a cyclical return — the only time Beethoven does so in a variation movement. Even more, he brings little glimpses from the Goldbergs into play, including direct citations from Bach and such techniques as a fugato and so on.” Víkingur’s recital traces a path to this pinnacle through four works, all in E major or minor yet each strikingly different in character. Alongside a Bach prelude and the great E minor Partita, he includes a rarely heard Schubert sonata comprising only two movements that he believes was written in response to Beethoven’s own two-movement Sonata in E minor, Op. 90 — which is why it, too, merits a place on his program.

Jimin Lee is a graduating senior at Washington University in St. Louis, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Data Science with a minor in Music. She has studied flute with Dr. Jennifer Gartley since 2022 and was a member of the WashU Wind Ensemble for seven semesters, serving as one of the principal flutists during the most recent academic year. She is the first-place winner of the 2025–2026 Friends of Music Concerto and Aria Competition and the 2026 Flute Society of St. Louis (FSSL) Young Artist Competition. Previously, she performed Breeze in the Forest as a soloist with the WashU Wind Ensemble in recognition of her runner-up placement in the 2024–2025 Concerto Competition. She also placed 3rd at the 2023 FSSL Young Artist Competition and is a two-time recipient of the Music Department Award at WashU.

 Only Stephen Hough could shape a concert like this. We begin with Klavierstücke – literally, ‘Piano Pieces’ – from two romantic giants, Schubert and Brahms, and two towering 20th-century composers, Schoenberg and Stockhausen. From Beethoven’s majestic ‘Waldstein’ Sonata, Robert Schumann’s vivid suite transports us to the heart of carnival. And we end – where else? – on the streets of Edwardian London, with Hough’s own bravura arrangements of songs from Mary Poppins.

The future prince of song gazed upon the chromaticism of Mozart's "Dissonance Quartet"—and in March 1813, at the age of 16, penned an early stroke of genius in just five days, carefree and bold in its harmony. The 22-year-old Antonín Dvořák composed 18 songs driven by heartbreak—and 22 years later arranged 12 of them for string quartet. Johannes Brahms, too, struggled for a long time before finally achieving his first string quartet, one that he considered truly valid. He had abandoned everything before it. With its selection, the Minetti Quartet offers a fascinating lesson in the quest for chamber music excellence.

Their musical journey began in elementary school, where they experimented with the piano and violin before settling on the cello. They discovered their passion for voice in the theater, participating in several musicals throughout their middle and high school years. For the past four years, they have been studying voice under Nathan Ruggles, with a focus on classical voice. Our 82nd season concludes with the Juilliard String Quartet in their 31st concert for Chamber Music Detroit - more than any other ensemble in our history. This program pairs two works in memory of the late JSQ violist Roger Tapping - including one by Tapping himself - with the stirring G major string quartet by Franz Schubert - the last of the composer’s 15 string quartets.

Irving Klein Competition winner, Julia Schilz, joins the SFCO in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s joyful Violin Concerto No. 5. Mozart was only nineteen years of age when he composed this, his final violin concerto, and a piece that sits at the very pinnacle of Classical concerti. Franz Schubert was also nineteen when he penned his 5th Symphony and its connection to Mozart’s writing is more than just youthful exuberance. At the time of its composition, Schubert was particularly enthralled with his earlier counterpart, writing in his diary, "O Mozart! Immortal Mozart! What countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!” The 5th Symphony pays homage to its muse both in its sunny elegance, and the smaller orchestra size Schubert would write for. Our concert opens with Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s lively and virtuosic Sinfonietta No. 1. A composer, conductor, and pedagogue, Perkinson was equally comfortable in a myriad of styles and genres. His Sinfonia No. 1 blends new and old, in an exciting and expertly-crafted tour de force.
