Previously, he devoted an entire season of performances to Bach’s Goldberg Variations—playing the cycle for 88 concerts in total, including at Cal Performances in May 2024—because, in his words, “I wanted to know how deeply I can dive into a composition and how many different facets I can discover in it.” He won a Grammy this year for his sterling recording of that work.

Richard Goode has been hailed for music-making of tremendous emotional power, depth and expressiveness, and acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of Classical and Romantic piano music. Goode has curated a program called “Fancies and Goodnights”—borrowing the title from a book of bewitching tales by writer John Collier—that highlights works that have caught his ear with their beauty and unpredictability.

With three gems from chamber music, the Busch Trio celebrates the triumph of art over the adversities of life: In his Piano Trio K. 502, the immortal Mozart plays with light and shade, yet his choice of the key of B-flat major underscores the hope for a better world. Despite the despair over his increasing deafness, Beethoven reached a creative peak around the creation of his "Ghost Trio." And Schubert, in the face of his approaching death, composed nothing less than a masterpiece with the monumental E-flat major Trio.

The ensemble is thrilled to welcome the acclaimed Mihai Marica as their new cellist, effective September 1, 2026. Honored by the League of American Orchestras, guest conductor Daniel Hege returns to Chapman Music Hall to lead the orchestra in a dark and mysterious concert that replicates the tone of the opera Khovanshchina. Rich harmonies evoke a feeling of dawn over Moscow for the audience in Tulsa's Performing Arts Center. Thereafter, enjoy the expressive work of Ruth Gipps's Horn Concerto, Op. 58, which features a three-movement piece, each with its own character and mood, ending on a lively and rhythmic passage. Hege leads the orchestra into the final and majestic selection of Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major, D.944, “The Great.” This four-movement piece travels through a bold, relaxed, lively, and triumphant orchestral journey. In a career spanning over thirty years, Daniel has produced an impressive
discography, honoured with numerous international awards.

At the age of 15, Daniel won the first prize at the International Tchaikovsky
Competition for Young Musicians in 1992 in Moscow, which launched the start
of his solo career. He plays the ‘Ex Shapiro’ Matteo Goffriller cello, made in Venice in 1727.

"Man only plays when he is in the full sense of the word a human being, and he is only fully a human being when he plays." These famous words come from Friedrich Schiller, and the program under the direction of our honorary conductor Christoph Eschenbach inspires us to many musical flourishes – with our wind players repeatedly shining through with their playful spirit. And the instrumental pieces hit the mark perfectly, for example in the overture from Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" from 1821: Here, bullets cursed by demonic powers decide the love life of a young hunter in a competition – but "the whole thing ends joyfully," as the composer noted. Afterwards, together with our solo horn player Andreas Kreuzhuber, we perform a fascinating concerto by Reinhold Glière: Although this virtuoso piece was composed in 1950, it is entirely imbued with a romantic spirit.

After the toils of daytime, Schubert and Brahms would often visit Vienna’s Red Hedgehog Tavern in Viena, Zum Roten Igel to hear breathtakingly emotional and virtuosic folk music performed by gypsy bands. Enjoy an evening of “re-folked” music by composers who adored the traditional songs and instrumental music of central and eastern Europe, with arrangements of chamber works by Brahms, Schubert and Janáček for orchestra and a quintet of clarinet, cello, violin, accordion and hammer dulcimer.

It was a pandemic that disrupted musical mathematics – but Schubert and Beethoven defy every rule of arithmetic. Therefore, today, instead of the mysterious (and sadly nonexistent) "Seventh," Schubert's elegant and charming Symphony No. 5 will be performed again – but this time with a full orchestral sound for all. Before that, Alban Berg's "Lyric Suite" from 1926 surprises with passionate intensity and a hint of the Roaring Twenties. The "Golden Twenties" also shimmer through the operetta sounds of Franz Lehár's "Paganini," whose authentic performance is a matter close to Adam Fischer's heart: After all, as a young conductor in St. Pölten, Austria, he gained his first experience of how "light musical theater" can indeed be a serious matter. Especially with Lehár, who for the first time dispenses with the obligatory happy ending: Paganini renounces the world of women – seriously tragic, without a wink.

Julia Fischer, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Nils Mönkemeyer and Benjamin Nyffenegger have been working together regularly for 15 years, devoting themselves to the royal genre of chamber music in intensive rehearsal and concert phases. Contrary to what the name might suggest, this is not a 'primaria' quartet, but a true chamber music ensemble in which four musicians work together as equals. Each of them is a gifted soloist. The combination of the highest virtuosity, a well-balanced ensemble spirit and great joy in playing results in quartet artistry of the highest order, which we can look forward to again this season. The Grammy-nominated Danish String Quartet joins the Danish National Girls’ Choir in combining old traditions and new music. They premiere the Stanford Live co-commission by composer and Stanford alumnus David Lang, titled in wildness, a work about the relationship between humans and mother earth. The first half of the program features folksongs and new music by American and Nordic women composers.

Schubert’s orchestral writing reached its peak in his forward-looking Ninth Symphony, which was almost lost to history but luckily resurfaced after Schubert’s death. The Cleveland Orchestra demonstrates the symphony’s depth and passion under the baton of Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, and cellist Sol Gabetta brings her rich tone and impeccable technique to Shostakovich’s captivating and rarely performed Second Cello Concerto.

Composed in 1824 at the request of a Viennese nobleman who played the clarinet, it brings together strings and winds in a unique way. In this exceptional setting, with the audience seated around the ensemble, the music feels joyful and refined as well as intimate and introspective.

The Isidore Quartet skyrocketed to the heights of the music world since winning the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Banff International String Quartet Competition and their debut at DACAMERA in 2023. They return with a strikingly diverse program, juxtaposing Schubert’s quartet with twentieth and twenty-first century works. We begin with the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti’s second quartet, where numerous musical lines weave together to create a dramatic soundscape. Pulitzer Prize-winner Tyshawn Sorey’s Everything Changes, Nothing Changes is a tour-de-force of subtle voicings, beautifully shifting harmonies and pulsating string sounds. We close with Schubert’s deeply expressive “Rosamunde” Quartet, admired for its emotional directness and eloquent beauty.

The New York Philharmonic String Quartet was formed in 2017 during the Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season. The group is comprised of four principal musicians from the Philharmonic: concertmaster Frank Huang, principal second violin Qianqian Li, principal viola Cynthia Phelps, and principal cello Carter Brey. In addition to their performances at Lincoln Center, all four members have amassed extensive awards and recognition for their extensive careers as soloists and chamber musicians.

Schubert's Famous Octet is music written for friends – who must also have been outstanding musicians, since the work often makes the highest technical demands on the performers.
