Baroque specialist Nicholas McGegan curates a heartwarming Christmas program, featuring excerpts from the festive Music for the Royal Fireworks. Georg Friedrich Händel composed this suite to commemorate the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, ending the War of Austrian Succession. Soprano Sunhae Im delights with her satin voice in perhaps the most famous baroque aria: the poignant and immortal Lascia ch’io pianga. Engaging in dialogue with jubilant trumpets, Im performs arias by Bach and Händel. Stepping briefly outside the Baroque, Franz Schubert allows the renowned soprano to converse with the clarinet. Michael Haydn, Joseph's younger brother, paints a charming Christmas scene with his Pastorello. Begin the festive season with baroque splendor in the comfortable ambiance and sparkling acoustics of the Queen Elisabeth Hall.

Starting to play at just five years old, by age eight Kevin Chen had been named one of CBC’s Top 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30 and became the youngest person in Canada to earn The Royal Conservatory of Music’s associate’s diploma. He has since won numerous accolades: he is the youngest-ever winner of the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition, he won first prize at the Concours de Genève, and first prize in the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition.

A laureate of both the junior and senior divisions of the Sphinx Competition, Adé Williams makes her Phillips debut with pianist Chelsea Wang. Both graduates of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, they begin with Johannes Brahms’s first Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 78, a beguiling and tuneful work where the violin and piano converse in absolute balance with neatly unfolding melodies.

There are impressive careers that one can only imagine at first. But they sometimes become reality: Petr Popelka’s love of music blossomed when he was a small child. He first formed a musical partnership with the double bass and played in the Staatskapelle Dresden for ten years. He composed on the side to keep his inner balance – but his fervent desire to conduct eventually grew stronger and stronger. And then everything went very quickly: he put his double bass bow aside and is now one of the most inspiring artists of the new generation of conductors, for whom mutual respect is always important when working together. Since this season, he has been Chief Conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, but other orchestras are also courting the rising star. Fortunately, the likeable musician is already one of our recurring guests: we share the Bohemian soul with the Prague-born conductor – which is why it was »love at first note« when he made his debut in Bamberg in 2022. We are now looking forward to explore the dazzling scores of Schubert, Strauss and Ravel with him, as well as Christian Gerhaher’s current favourite songs, which are far from the usual vocal cycles. Petr Popelka is known for his varied programmes and also for bringing each piece to life with his unique, emotional and refreshing interpretations. He loves the passionate working relationship between him and our musicians, as he once emphasised: »There really is a great open-mindedness in the orchestra – and a willingness to give the best. I feel incredibly comfortable!«

The Irish mezzo has risen to a high position as an exponent of numerous major roles around the world but enjoys a particular relationship with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where she received the prestigious Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum award in 2013 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the arts; earlier this year she was artist-in-residence at the Glimmerglass Festival.

Schubert’s 1815 symphony was completed in less than two months and then debuted publicly 70 years later.  Beethoven’s piano concerto, from 1805-1806, was composed during a period of artistic and emotional turmoil.  This mysterious yet lyrical music expanded the role of piano in orchestral repertoire.

Mozart wrote in a letter to his father that death is »the true, best friend of man« – which for Manfred Honeck is a »profound and significant statement«. The internationally sought-after conductor is known for his unmistakable and trend-setting style – and is also a charismatic and passionate artist who loves emotional depth: »If I had the choice between technical precision and emotional music, I would always choose the music.« The former violist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who once began his conducting career as Claudio Abbado’s assistant, has been a regular guest of ours for more than 30 years. This led to an intimate friendship – and as a result, he is now officially performing his first concert as our new honorary conductor. We are delighted to be performing one of his favourite programmes with him on Eternity Sunday, which is very moving and will certainly give food for thought: The equally »mysterious and divine moments« in Mozart's last work – the otherworldly beautiful requiem from 1791, which the composer worked on until his early death at the age of just 35 and was unable to complete. Manfred Honeck breaks the ritualistic confessional music abruptly at precisely that point after eight bars in the »Lacrimosa« – and complements and combines it in an incredibly comforting way with other poignant sound creations, texts from powerful biblical passages, letters by Mozart, poems, Gregorian chorales and the urging ringing of bells.

This is the last recital of Paul Lewis' Schubert survey. Lewis has devoted the past four years almost exclusively to Schubert. It's fair to say the composer has no greater living ambassador. The final trilogy of piano sonatas, written at the very end of Schubert's short life, is the pinnacle of this keyboard poet's achievement. Only the last three Beethoven sonatas rival this program. Lewis played those Beethoven sonatas for us over a decade ago. Now comes Schubert's hour.

Recent career highlights include her BBC Proms solo debut with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Dinis Sousa, her New York recital debut at 92NY with Jeremy Denk and directing the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at Mozartwoche Salzburg. As Leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Maria also regularly directs the orchestra in repertoire such as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.

Two musical Dames at the very tops of their respective professions – Dame Sarah Connolly received The King’s Medal for Music in 2023, whilst Dame Imogen Cooper received the late Queen’s Medal for Music in 2019 – once again join together in recital as they previously have to considerable acclaim at such venues as the Cheltenham Festival and the Oxford International Song Festival. ‘The warm relationship between both performers came across in their performance and the audience was delighted’, wrote the Henley Standard. The programme includes songs both familiar and unfamiliar , including Loewe’s setting of texts better known from Schumann and examples by the neglected Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck.

The young pianist Tom Zalmanov studied with Murray Perahia, Emmanuel Ax and Sir András Schiff at the Jerusalem Music Centre before coming to London, and is completing his Advanced Diploma. An avid chamber musician, Tom was invited by Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss to be a resident artist at Marlboro Music Festival in 2023 and 2024, and was also a Fellow at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute. His rich piano recital connects Janáček's paean to Moravian folk music with Debussy’s light-filled reflections, culminating in Schubert’s virtuosic homage to his hero, Beethoven: the exhilarating 'Wanderer' Fantasy.

Paul Lewis’s Schubert cycles have received worldwide acclaim and further established him among the leading pianists of his generation. “The British keyboardist has immersed himself in these works to the extent that the music seems to flow out of him effortlessly, as manifest in a poised and controlled execution that easily handles the formidable challenges posed by each piece” (Chicago Classical Review). This is a rare performance of these three monumental works of the piano repertoire.

‘The wonderfully satisfying partnership of cellist and pianist’ was how the Guardian described a recital by these fantastic artists. Steven is well known to us, but equally in the world class is cellist Alban Gerhardt. He is one of the world’s most versatile cellists, renowned for his musicality and virtuosity. It is hard to imagine a more appetising programme beginning with Schubert’s much loved Arpeggione and concluding in sparking French repertoire from Debussy and Ravel.

Experience the grandeur of Romanticism as the London Symphony Orchestra presents "Mendelssohn and Schubert 'The Great'" at the Barbican on Thursday, 7 November 2024, at 7pm. This evening promises to be a celebration of elegance, grace, and might, featuring the works of Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, and Franz Schubert under the baton of conductor Daniele Rustioni, with Francesca Dego on the violin.

Irish pianist Barry Douglas has established a major international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. As Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival, he continues to celebrate his Irish heritage whilst also maintaining a busy international ensemble and solo touring schedule. In January 2021 Barry Douglas was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to music and community relations.

Franz Schubert was 27 years old when he was commissioned to write a large-scale work in the style of Beethoven’s Septet, Op. 20. Taking Beethoven’s instrumentation and adding an extra violin, Schubert created an Octet for string quartet, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, and horn that has become one of the most beloved masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire.

Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) grew-up in a supportive family where his schoolmaster father, Franz Theodor Schubert, and his older brother Ignaz, provided him with musical training on the viola. From there he went on to learn to play the organ at his local parish church. Schubert’s young talent eventually earned him a scholarship placement at the Stadtkonvikt, which was the premier boarding school for commoners. While there, he also earned a place as a singer in the Imperial Court chapel. At the Stadtkonvikt, Schubert’s music theory and composition teacher was none other than the famed court composer Antonio Salieri.

Discover chamber music masterworks by Mozart and Schubert with a striking new clarity and richness. With a dynamic performance style and use of historical bows and gut strings, the Chiaroscuro Quartet achieves a sound “so immediate, you could summon any musical line at any time for the closest of attention” (The Irish Times). In this program, the ensemble performs the last of the quintessential string quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn (who, upon hearing it, immediately declared Mozart “the greatest composer I know, either personally or by reputation”). The quartet also performs Schubert’s monumental final string quartet, whose visceral, dynamic intensity and technical variety make it an especially enticing piece.

The young “Russian genius” (Corriere della Sera) came to international prominence when, in 2014, he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians at age thirteen. “Contrary to what could be expected of a youngster …, he demonstrated not only high technical accuracy but also an incredible maturity. Crystal clear sounds and perfect balance revealed his exceptional ability” (Amadeus). Malofeev has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent pianists of his generation. His performances have garnered high praise from critics, with publications such as Der Standard declaring his debut at the Musikverein as “a world piano revolution”.
