Beethoven’s “Ninth” is always a momentous event, so we’re thrilled to present two performances of this beloved piece. Known as “Ode to Joy” because of the familiar theme in the symphony’s fourth movement, it’s the first symphony to incorporate vocal soloists and chorus into what was previously a purely instrumental genre. We’re delighted to welcome the acclaimed Worcester Chorus of Music Worcester to our stage along with four outstanding soloists to bring this monumental yet whimsical composition to life. But first, our program opens with an important work by Margaret Bonds, noted as one of the first Black composers and performers to gain recognition in the United States. Written in 1964 after the composer’s visit to Montgomery, Alabama, the Montgomery Variations fervently examines seminal events from the civil-rights movement.

Watkins' "Dark River: The Fannie Lou Hamer Story," also performed by the PVS Chorus. Similarly, when Bach suggests "Have no fear, I am with you,” we are asked to have faith, to believe in something that we feel in our hearts, just as Margaret Bonds uses W.E.B. DuBois’ poem Credo to share her beliefs. Spiritual Suite is Bonds’ magnum opus for piano with each movement based on a traditional Negro spiritual connecting hints of blues, jazz, and gospel with the classical styles of Romanticism and Impressionism. The first African American woman to have her works performed by major orchestras, Florence Price, born in 1887, broke barriers at a time when classical music was dominated by white men. Trained at the New England Conservatory in Boston before moving to the midwest, she found success during the Chicago Black Renaissance, writing music that blended spirituals and folk tunes with classical forms. Though her work faded into relative obscurity after her death in 1953, the discovery of a significant cache of her compositions in 2009 brought about a revival of her work. This rekindling of interest has been driven by musicians like Cann, who, in 2016, performed the New York City premiere of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement, reigniting her legacy and underscoring her enduring impact on classical music.

Winner of the 2022 prestigious Richard Tucker Award, Angel Blue has garnered international praise for her radiant, velvety voice and her portrayals of many of opera’s greatest heroines including Mimi in La Boheme, Violetta in La Traviata, and Tosca. She opened the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019/20 season as Bess in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and also starred in the Grammy-winning recording from that production. Future engagements include headlining a new Metropolitan Opera production of Aida. She also enjoys an active concert and recital career. In this varied program, she’ll be joined by Grammy-nominated pianist Myra Huang, Head of Music at the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and Director of musical administration and head coach for the Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS program. It’s hard to keep eyes and ears off this accomplished and charismatic artist. “I want people to feel like they’re listening to someone who has something thoughtful and meaningful to say,” says Lawrence Brownlee, who returns to SF Performances after his 2018 debut. Brownlee is deeply thoughtful about his connection to audiences, through selection of repertory and musical storytelling.

SF Symphony Collaborative Partner and classical singer Julia Bullock joins Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Orchestra for a program that sings the American story in works by George Gershwin and Margaret Bonds. Reena Esmail’s Black Iris takes its title from the eponymous Georgia O'Keeffe painting and grapples with the recent #metoo movement. The program closes with Maurice Ravel’s ravishing Daphnis et Chloé, telling the story of two lovers and their wildly adventurous lives.

Following Margaret Bonds's debut in New York City's Town Hall, she received a telegram saying "Beware or we'll be celebrating four great B's: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Bonds." Join Boston Conservatory Chorale and Graduate Conductor's Choir for an evening of works by the four great B's. Modeled after Bach's "Christ lag in Todesbanden," which will open the concert, this performance will feature the New England premiere of Bonds's cantata, "Simon Bore the Cross," setting the words of Langston Hughes and based on the spiritual "Never Said a Mumblin' Word." Additional works include Beethoven's "Elegischer Gesang," Brahms's "O Schöne Nacht," and Bonds's own choral arrangement of "The Negro Speaks of Rivers."

Music is certainly one way to express individuality, but it is also a great unifier, helping to relate people to one another despite their differences. It can connect people across cultures and continents with ideas and feelings. In this concert, two incredible symphonies from two seemingly disparate composers (Antonín Dvořák and William Dawson) will demonstrate how traditional music from their cultures informed their symphonic works. William Dawson incorporated African American spirituals while Antonín Dvořák integrated folks tunes from his Czech homeland.

Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony constantly beckons the listener to dance, though it is not a dance piece. Even in its more solemn moments, the symphony is spirited, graceful, and optimistic. The music soars over and traces the spirit of Bohemia so much that the listener is transported to Dvořák’s home country.

Our celebrity host Angela Brown performed an iconic aria from her upcoming role in Indianapolis Opera's Tosca, our Resident Artists had an incredible Indianapolis Opera debut, and Daniel Narducci brought a beautiful rendition of "Do you hear the people sing?" to this uplifting program. Joshua Thompson (Sock Joplin) performed a stunning piano rendition of "Troubled Water" by Margaret Bonds and paired with Jared Thompson on saxophone and soprano Angela Brown to light up the stage with "Trust" by Roy Hargrove with original lyrics by Jared Thompson.
