Now she’s decided to retire, and for this, her very last public concert, she comes home to the place where it all began: Liverpool. “I have enjoyed the most wonderful and fulfilling career,” she says. Udo Wachtveitl, actor, speaker, director, screenwriter is a true great on the screen and his filmography is endless. For decades he has played the Munich detective duo Batic - Leitmayr with his colleague Miroslav Nemec in the legendary ARD crime series Tatort . Since 2010 the actor has also lent his sonorous, characterful voice to BR-Klassik audio biographies, searching for clues through the eras and lives of great composers. Udo Wachtveitl can tell stories like no other. Even stories about the night, because the night is not just for sleeping! The appropriate music - from early German romanticism to French postmodernism - is provided by two soloists from the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra: deputy principal flutist Franziska Both and principal cellist Ariel Barnes. Young Turkish pianist Can Çakmur opens our new season with a characterful programme of lyrical colours and rich romanticism. He begins with Schumann’s youthful story of a masked ball where two brothers – representing the composer’s vying personalities – dance until the clock strikes midnight. Next is an epic Ballade, regarded as the most intense and powerful of all Chopin’s compositions and inspired by a poem by his Polish contemporary, Adam Mickiewicz. Can’s recital ends with four pieces written by Schubert shortly before his untimely death at 31. They are rich and atmospheric, delivering deep emotions.

Our new season of Live at Lunch concerts continues our long-established partnership with Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music. Pianist Yuxuan Zhao brings with him a dramatic programme of masterworks.

Yuxuan begins with Haydn’s last piano sonata, composed in London and considered his greatest because of the almost symphonic sounds and mastery of the sonata form. The central part of the recital features Frederic Chopin, from his poetic and turbulent Ballade No. 2, through five of the brilliant jewels of his famous Preludes, to the delicate, dreamy Nocturne. The recital ends with what is currently one of the most popular works in classical music – Ravel’s La Valse. A tribute to the Viennese Waltz, it takes us from a glittering ballroom to the fantastic, fatal whirling of the finale.

With his Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich outwitted Soviet authorities with the finesse of a double agent. Threatened by Stalin’s regime, the composer skillfully appeased Soviet officials with this gripping work packed with triumphant Russian themes, but also subversive satire and daring irony. Chief conductor of the Ravinia Festival Marin Alsop also leads the CSO in a captivating work about Harriet Tubman and a beloved Chopin concerto featuring pianist Lukáš Vondráček.

The concert season at Tippet Rise concludes with a debut performance by cellist Camille Thomas alongside returning pianist Julien Brocal. Frequent collaborators, the two will play a mixed program of works by Chopin and August Franchomme, composers who were not only contemporaries during the early 19th century, but also close friends. Julien Brocal is also a longtime friend of Tippet Rise, having spent several weeks in residency here to record his 2018 album Reflections. We are delighted to welcome him back, and excited for new project that he and Camille Thomas will record at Tippet Rise this year.

The San Francisco International Piano Festival proudly presents the debut recital of the acclaimed pianist and composer, Asiya Korepanova. Known for her virtuosic skill and emotional depth, Ms. Korepanova will perform a program that showcases her original transcriptions, beginning with a tribute to the festival's featured composer, Gabriel Fauré.

Asiya Korepanova is celebrated for her comprehensive repertoire, which includes over 60 piano concertos and solo works spanning from the Baroque period to contemporary compositions. She is the only pianist to have performed the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff within the composer’s 150th-anniversary year in 2023. Her performances are noted for their emotional intensity and technical brilliance, earning her repeated engagements and widespread admiration.

In addition to her prowess as a pianist, Ms. Korepanova is also a recognized composer, visual artist, and poet. Her transcriptions of major works, such as Richard Strauss’ "Ein Heldenleben" and Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death," have solidified her reputation as a formidable transcriber. Her recent compositions include the world premiere recording of her concerto for alto saxophone and piano, "Poéme," and the premiere of her Piano Quintet "I marvel at the sky."

From La bohème to Leonard Bernstein, Carmen to a country ballad, these are all filled with timeless, universal sentiments, and chamber music’s exquisite intimacy is the perfect setting. As ‘the ideal Romantic pianist’ (Limelight), Jayson Gillham is perfectly placed to launch 2024’s Festival with a programme of works by the Romantic pianist–composer par-excellence, Frédéric Chopin. Chopin’s elegance and poetry will be on full display in a menu that pivots on two sets of the composer’s Études. Were these works – lyrical and attention grabbing, impassioned and miraculous – designed to test finger technique or enchant listeners? They do both, as do the big beasts that bookend Gillham’s recital: the pure virtuosity of the composer’s breathless E flat Rondo and the grand heroism and pianistic panache of his A flat Polonaise.

Known to her adoring fans as the “Valkyrie of the piano,” Venezuelan pianist, composer, and opera star Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) stunned audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Like Cuban violinist-composer José White, Carreño received support from American composer Louis Gottschalk in New York City, and concertized widely in Europe, before returning to America, and then to Venezuela, where she attempted to found a conservatory and opera company. This program weaves together the rich tapestry of Carreño’s life and influence, featuring her works alongside those of her teachers, friends, and students, and even a husband.
