Austrian composer Ignace Pleyel, who studied with Haydn, found lasting fame as a pioneer of piano building. His Paris-based company continued producing fine instruments after his death in 1831, influencing the development of piano works by, among others, Chopin and Debussy. Finghin Collins, inspired to pay homage to Pleyel after playing on a rebuilt Pleyel 280 concert grand piano dating from 1937, includes beautiful miniatures by the Franco-Irish composer Joseph O’Kelly and Georges Pfeiffer, both partners in the Pleyel firm.

KASA Quartet, First Prize winner of the 2017 Coltman Chamber Music Competition, was founded in the summer of 2016 by Andy Liang, Aaron Schwartz, Stephanie Price-Wong and Kyle Price. KASA utilizes its fluency in multiple styles to curate fresh, innovative, genre-defying performances that harken the classical standard repertoire and fuse it with favorites of the jazz, musical theater, folk and pop standards. The quartet takes pride in creating and interpreting original arrangements and transcriptions of works by Jacob Collier, Marvin Hamlisch, George Gershwin among others. The ensemble has taught and performed as featured artists for the Ravinia Festival, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Austin Chamber Music Center, Second City Chamber Series, Miami Music Project, and Chamber Music Connection in addition to holding a residency each summer at the Caroga Lake Music Festival since its inception. KASA’s shared passion for bringing multiple genres together for their programming has attracted various audiences and presenters from different musical interests together for memorable performances and projects. KASA released its debut album in 2022, Forever Wild, Vol. 1 with each track featuring guest collaborations spanning a wide array of genres and styles.

The progressive 20th-century Polish Composer Witold Lutosławski was admired for his avant-garde works but he was also capable of creating immediately appealing music. His Little Suite of 1950, with its infectious energy and folk-inspired themes, has since become a popular concert opener. A century earlier, Lutosławski’s compatriot Chopin was considered a radical in his own Romantic fashion and his youthful Second Piano Concerto is an unashamed showpiece for the soloist who’s centre stage at all times to dazzle the audience with light-fingered lyricism. The effervescent Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu takes up the challenge.

Tchaikovsky never did anything by halves, and he poured all his heartache, his sorrow and his matchless gift for melody into a final symphony like no other. The gifted Lili Boulanger died at the age of just 24. The son of a piano teacher, Sham began lessons at age 3 and was competing and concertizing by age 10. Soon after, he was featured in the UK Channel 4 documentary The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies. Balancing piano with other interests, Sham earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University and a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory. He proceeded to study at the Ingesund School of Music in Sweden and earn an artist diploma from the Juilliard School. While pursuing a career as a pianist, Sham continues to enjoy other interests such as travel, aviation, gastronomy, oenology, and language.

Yuja Wang makes a long-anticipated return to The Soraya, following her 2016 debut. Since, she has secured her reputation as one of the most celebrated artists around the world. Consistent with Wang’s recent focus on Frédéric Chopin, she chose the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Wang is joined by her regular partner, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, a pan-European ensemble created to tour globally, having performed in over 40 nations. From Polish film composer Wojciech Kilar’s beautiful Orawa, a celebration of the mountain fiddle-players of Southern Poland, to Borodin’s legendary "Polovtsian Dances", conjuring up the wild dancing of ancient nomadic tribespeople in Southern Russia, this program is banquet of music from the shifting borderlands between Europe and Asia. The mazurka is more closely associated with Frédéric Chopin than with any other composer. He wrote his first mazurka at the age of 15, and nearly 60 more would follow over the course of his life. In them, Chopin expressed his sense of home and national pride, his longing for Poland and his family. At the same time, he transformed the dance into art music. Rafał Blechacz, winner of the 2005 Chopin Competition, was the best possible interpreter for this repertoire to conclude "Pianomania."

The exceptionally large brass ensemble (25 players!) in Leoš Janáček's Sinfonietta is just one of the special features of this concert. Perhaps this is why the five movements sound like film music and have been "sampled" in several television series and films—although not intended as such by the composer. The four-movement Les Eaux célestes (2023) by the French composer Camille Pépin also leaves a special aural impression with its open, enchanting form and colorful instrumentation. Under the direction of Ben Glassberg, the Graz Philharmonic will accompany pianist Ilya Shmukler, who was awarded first prize at the 2024 Concours Géza Anda, in Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1.

The Georgian pianist David Khrikulis, a finalist of the 2025 Chopin Competition, will perform at the Paliesius Manor - during this competition he received the most audience sympathy and discussions of all the participants. He will perform a program of Chopin's works at the Manor, for the first time after the competition. This is the pianist's only concert in Lithuania.

Piano Salon Series: Student Showcase House Concert in Catalina Foothills

Described as one of the finest pianists of her generation, the 2015 Leeds Piano Competition winner Anna Tsybuleva returns with a dream-like recital of melodic exploration. Chopin’s 21 Nocturnes are generally considered among the finest short solo works for the piano and hold an important place in contemporary concert repertoire. Anna’s selection from the Op. 9, Op. 27 and Op. 48 pieces bear witness to the song-like melodies, and the dreamy, languid character of the form. Ravel aimed to write the most technically difficult work in the repertoire and succeeded with the fantasy of Gaspard de la Nuit. A showpiece in three parts, we hear the water nymph, Ondine, the morbid spectre of the gallows and finally the devilish evil spirit, Scarbo.

Sunday Piano Series: Anna Tsybuleva

This 18-year-old Russian virtuoso is a protégé of Grigory Sokolov and has already appeared in recital at all the major European halls. Playing with poetry and panache well beyond her years, she appears en route to her Carnegie Hall debut.

Professor of Piano John Ellis will perform a recital including Novelettes by Poulenc, Ballade no. 4 in F minor, Op. 52 by Chopin, Prélude, Choral et Fugue by Franck, and Fantasy in C, Op. 17 by Schumann.
