In this concert, you can expect pure romance! Robert Schumann's Second Symphony practically glows with energy, emotion, and vitality. The finale in particular is a true fireworks display, making Schumann's genius and unwavering will to live impressively palpable. On the other hand, Frédéric Chopin's First Piano Concerto transports its listeners to a world full of elegance and passion. With virtuosic runs and enchanting melodies, Chopin demonstrates why he was celebrated as one of the greatest pianists and composers of his time. As the icing on the cake, an overture by Fanny Hensel, the sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was equally as talented as her brilliant brother, will be performed.

Here, Armand Duval, a young man from high society, falls head over heels in love with the courtesan Marguerite Gautier. Marguerite gives up her former life to be with Armand, but his father rejects their relationship as unsuitable and pressures her until sheagrees to give Armand up, which she does out of love for him. Soon after,, Marguerite dies, lonely and destitute. Only after her death does Armand learn the true reason behind their separation.

Twin-brother percussion duo Twincussion brings virtuosic flair to a program bridging Taiwanese folk tradition, classical, and innovative contemporary works through marimbas, wind chimes, Chinese opera gongs, and electronics. Handel’s Passacaglia, arranged by Halvorsen and reimagined for percussion, showcases the duo’s technical brilliance. The great success of Polish mountain music – the concert has been a quiet success on international stages for years, inspiring genuine admiration, yet it always returns to Warsaw. The music of three outstanding Polish composers: Karol Szymanowski, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, and Wojciech Kilar, is combined into a mountain musical spectacle. Szymanowski highly valued the voices of the Podhale region for, among other things, their "primordial wildness, the painstaking forging of shapes that don't sink hopelessly into the bloodless sea of ​​sentimentality, and finally, their innate vividness of imagination." Górecki's fascination with folklore extended further, as "from the mountains to the sea," as evidenced by the song collection " Wisło, szara Wisło ." Beethoven, Brahms, Bach – these have been Igor Levit's most important companions in recent years. The fact that his new program includes sonatas by Franz Schubert and Frédéric Chopin alongside Robert Schumann's Nocturnes is a cause for concern. With a ballet evening that is as brilliant as it is thoughtful, the Slovenian State Ballet Ljubljana and the Klagenfurt City Theatre continue their successful collaboration of recent years. Boléro combines two classics of modern ballet composed for large orchestra with the romantic melancholy of Chopin's Nocturnes for piano. The evening takes its title from Maurice Ravel's most famous work. He created Boléro on commission from the Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein, but in dance history, Maurice Béjart's 1961 interpretation is considered a milestone. Choreographer Renato Zanella bases his work on Ravel's fundamental musical idea of ​​the struggle for supremacy between rhythm and melody, emphasizing that the beauty of melody rarely emerges victorious in a direct confrontation with the power of rhythm.

Our opening concert begins with a work by Haitian American composer Sydney Guillaume. Titled Lavil Okap, or “the city of Cap-Haïtien” in Haitian Creole, the piece was composed in 2020. The music draws inspiration from the African rhythms that enslaved people brought to Haiti, and from the very first notes, it projects a jubilant atmosphere driven by catchy rhythms throughout. He really brings Haitian street music to the concert hall. It’s a piece that is a lot of fun to play, and I know you’ll love listening to it. Alongside their careers as virtuoso pianists, Chopin and Rachmaninoff were brilliant composers, filling their works to the brim with rhapsodic melodies and luxurious harmonies. The two are paired in this dynamic program that showcases acclaimed pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii in Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto. Dima Slobodeniouk then leads Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, an expansive work first recorded by The Cleveland Orchestra in 1928 with close guidance from the composer himself.

Pianopalooza is our week-long piano festival that will welcome and celebrate the debut of the Rogue Valley Symphony’s latest addition: a coveted Hamburg Steinway piano called The Raven. This spirited programme is a celebration of the piano through dance, from the sweeping elegance of Chopin’s waltzes and polonaises to the sultry rhythms of Granados’ Danzas española and the fiery energy of Ginastera’s Suite de danzas criollas. Expect the whirling romance of Ravel’s and Respighi’s waltzes, the swagger of Prokofiev’s Mercutio, and the heady swirl of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances.

From an early age, Alexander Gadjiev found the piano entertaining. He was particularly amused by how easy it is to produce a note, but how difficult it is to shape notes. This childhood enthusiasm developed into something more: at the age of nine, Alexander Gadjiev played with an orchestra for the first time. At ten, he had his first solo performance, followed in the years that followed by top marks and a long list of competition successes. But the Italian-Slovenian pianist has more than just a technical talent for the keyboard. He also considers his fluency in five languages ​​a key to his success, allowing him to absorb and process different musical styles and languages, adapting them to his own taste. With »AnnyTime StoryTime«, the internationally acclaimed pianist Anny Hwang invites the audience to a captivating musical storytelling experience. Each work in her programme unfolds its own story – sometimes full of passion, sometimes with gentle poetry, always imbued with depth and expressiveness. Ballads already existed in literature, but Chopin set himself the task of realising them in classical music. To celebrate this kind of narrative, the programme opens with Chopin’s lyrical Ballade No. 2, followed by Beethoven’s dramatic Appassionata Sonata, which is one of the most impressive works of piano literature in terms of its intensity.

Yokohama-born Sachiko Furuhata made her debut in 2017 at Carnegie Hall New York to standing ovations. Since then, she has made guest appearances at various major concert halls such as the San Francisco Herbst Theatre, the Edinburgh Usher Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Hamburg Laeiszhalle. As a soloist she has played with orchestras such as the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra or the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

A visit by the most talented young artists from Georgia has long been a regular feature of the festival's summer program. This year, the renowned Paliashvili Music School in Tbilisi is sending two of its very young talents to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—Miriam Narimanidze and Avtandil Vartagava—to demonstrate their piano skills. They will present a colorful and diverse program, both solo and duet, at the Nakenstorf Art Barn.

"This was my first work played by an orchestra and my first contact with a large audience. I was 22 years old at the time," reports Olivier Messiaen. "Les offrandes oubliées" (The Forgotten Offerings) was composed in 1930 and premiered on February 19, 1931 in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées by the Orchestre des concerts Straram under the direction of its boss and namesake, Walther Straram. The "symphonic meditation" (as the subtitle says) is based on linguistically comprehensible but abstract ideas. The texts were written by Messiaen himself. The themes of the three verses (cross - sin - Eucharist) can be understood as situations of contemplation, descent and rapture and form the three sections of the work.

It is said that there are two cures for heartbreak: time and Chopin's music. We can certainly offer one when piano phenomenon Jan Lisiecki returns to Tivoli's Concert Hall with the work that secured him a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon at the unheard-of age of 15. On the bill, we have without a doubt one of the world's absolute leading Chopin interpreters: the 29-year-old Canadian superpianist with Polish roots, who broke through as a real prodigy with Chopin's piano concertos and has since toured the world with his delicate and extremely elegant piano playing.

Blechacz likes to be a little shy, much more so in conversation than with his instrument: "I would rather answer your questions with music than in an interview," he once told his journalist counterpart. So let's listen to him instead. For example, when he plays Chopin. He never teases anything salon-like out of this music; with him, this music does not sound like cuddly poetry. Blechacz shows its endangered elegance, its rough edges in a very small space. Where some of his colleagues try to explain Chopin with the help of the pedal, Blechacz exercises restraint with his right foot. As a result, his Chopin often sounds pleasantly unpadded, but shimmering and, when necessary, also irascible and dry. "Chopin has become a kind of life partner for me," he admits today. "In his music, I am completely at one with myself."
