Huang Plays Brahms' Violin Concerto

Violist Roeland Jagers is a passionate chamber musician, teacher, and soloist. He was a founding member of the Rubens Quartet, laureate of several international competitions. The quartet enjoyed an active international career for 16 seasons in Europe, the United States, and Israel. Since then, Roeland has performed in various formations and recital programs. After three years as principal violist of the North Netherlands Orchestra, Jagers has recently joined the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in Amsterdam as their new principal violist. In addition, he is a returning guest principal with such orchestras as the Residentie Orkest and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Jagers teaches viola and chamber music at the Indiana University Summer String Academy as well as the University of Oklahoma Summer String Academy. He has extensive teaching experience, working regularly with all levels from amateurs and college students to young professionals. He recently wrote a brief chamber music method that addresses subjects including score study, leadership, and rehearsal techniques. Jagers studied viola with Gisella Bergman and Ferdinand Erblich. In 2001, he earned a Bachelor of Music diploma with honors and continued on to earn a Master of Music in 2004 with Vladimir Mendelssohn, also with honors, at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In addition to his activities as a violist, Jagers studied piano, earning a Bachelor of Music diploma in 2003. As a member of the Rubens Quartet, he studied for four years at the Dutch String Quartet Academy in Amsterdam, where he worked intensely with members of the Amadeus, Hagen, Juilliard, and Borodin quartets, followed by two years at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin with Eberhard Feltz. Jagers plays a Giovanni Pistucci viola, on loan to him from the Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds in Amsterdam

Writing in The Guardian, Sir Stephen Hough’s reflections on Brahms’s First Piano Concerto conjure up the fire, intimacy, romance and drama of this phenomenal concerto, one that feels like it contains a whole cosmos in its three movements. It’s paired with a symphony by another composer whose works contain musical universes, Bruckner, as we explore his Symphony No.1.

In this most lyrical, poetic and fantastical of his concertos, Beethoven does not abandon Mozartian concerto form but imbues it with a genuinely romantic voice. In a thrilling dialogue between soloist and orchestra, it is ardent and melancholy, heroic and ethereal, anguished and whimsical. Schumann’s Second Symphony was a personal triumph and marked the start of the final phase of his career. It is a reflection not only of his recent health issues but also the feeling of triumph at overcoming the despair that had gripped him for a year. It transports the listener towards redemption in a way that looks back to Beethoven but also predicts the future greats, like Mahler, who were to come. A magnificent energy pervades Brahms’ overture. Opening with two emphatic chordal exclamations its defiant strength is heightened by the return of a poignant little march idea, defining the ‘Tragic’ even more potently than all the muscular thrust before and after it.

From the beginning, Brahms’ Third Symphony has proven to be his most evocative. Brahms offers a compelling, highly revealing musical self-portrait, rich with references to his own thoughts about life and love in its striking mixture of passion and pessimism, of restlessness and serenity, With numerous acknowledgments to Wagner and allusions to the same Rhine-based mythology, it provides other fascinations as well. The spirit of Brahms infuses Hough’s Piano Concerto. The title refers to Stefan Zweig’s memoir of his cultural life in Vienna before the First World War and evokes nostalgia for a bygone era when piano concertos were a touring composer-pianist’s calling card. It bridges time, weaving together echoes of the past with virtuosic brilliance. The Variations on an Original Theme is a brilliantly varied portrait gallery of Elgar’s friends, family and neighbours. The musical caricatures contain some of the most charming and deeply felt music Elgar ever penned and these are elaborated upon in this unique performance with Elgar’s descriptions narrated by an actor.

Join the English Symphony Orchestra for an enchanting Nordic Journey featuring the much-loved Grieg Piano Concerto, renowned for its dramatic opening drumroll, lyrical second movement, and its association with Morecambe & Wise and Andre Previn. This concert marks the first appearance of acclaimed Japanese pianist Noriko Ogawa at the Town Hall.

The evening opens with Brahms' intense and emotionally charged Tragic Overture, composed in 1888. The concert concludes with Sibelius' Symphony No. 5, a three-movement masterpiece often hailed as one of the finest symphonies of the 20th century, showcasing the enduring vitality of Romantic music in 1915.

One of the most sought-after pianists of the time is the German Martin Helmchen, who this evening is the guest of the Copenhagen Phil with his eminent excess of both piano technique and musicality. On this evening's occasion, the orchestra has been reinforced by the next generation of orchestral musicians from Det Kgl. Danish Music Conservatory - to the tunes of masterpieces by Brahms and Berlioz.

Chih-Yi Chen has been on the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 2003 and is the associate chair of the Chamber and Collaborative Music Department. Chen was a recipient of the 2023 Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award. She has also been on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer String Academy for more than two decades. Her versatile qualities as a collaborative partner, chamber musician, soloist and teacher have contributed to a distinguished career, nationally and internationally. Highlights of the 2022-23 season include concerts with violinists Sirena Huang, Richard Lin, Luke Hsu, and Ioana Cristina Goicea, as well as performances and master classes in Taiwan and Argentina. Chen has been performing with International Violin Competition of Indianapolis Laureates since 2003, when she was first invited to perform with Barnabás Kelemen. She has served as an official pianist for the competition since the 9th Quadrennial in 2014 and was awarded special recognition at the 2018 competition for Best Performances of the Beethoven and Mozart sonatas. Her early work with the talented young violinists of the IU Violin Virtuosi, directed by renowned pedagogue Mimi Zweig, led to performances in France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Japan, and throughout the United States. Among the numerous musicians with whom she has collaborated are violinists Jaime Laredo, Mihaela Martin, Kyoko Takezawa, Sarah Kapustin, Andrés Cárdenes, Pavel Berman, Liviu Prunaru, Augustin Hadelich, Clara-Jumi Kang, and Kerson Leong; violists Atar Arad, Brian Chen, and Masumi Per Rostad; cellists Sharon Robinson, Peter Stumpf, and Bion Tsang; clarinetists James Campbell, Howard Klug, and Gábor Varga; bassoonist William Ludwig; and flutist Thomas Robertello. She has also performed with the Michelangelo, Pacifica, Rubens, and Verona string quartets. Born in Taipei, Chen earned Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Music degrees from the Jacobs School, where she studied with Lev Vlasenko and Luba Edlina-Dubinsky

Anthony McGill, the first African-American principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic, is celebrated for his brilliance, penetrating sound, and rich character. His illustrious career includes performances with top orchestras worldwide and a notable appearance at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration. McGill's dedication to music education and advocacy for diversity in classical music further underscores his multifaceted contributions to the arts.

Joining McGill is the Pacifica Quartet, an ensemble acclaimed for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and daring repertory choices. With a career spanning nearly three decades, the Quartet has established itself as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. Their powerful energy and cohesive sound have earned them international recognition and numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards. The Pacifica Quartet is known for its masterful interpretations of string quartet cycles and its commitment to contemporary music, commissioning and performing new works by leading composers.

The program for the evening features a rich selection of works, including Dvořák's String Quartet Op. 96 American, Ben Shirley's High Sierra Sonata for Clarinet and Quartet, and Brahms' Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115. This collaboration between McGill and the Pacifica Quartet promises a captivating performance, showcasing their exceptional artistry and deep musical connection.
