Augustin Hadelich's interpretation of this concerto is expected to be a tour de force, showcasing his exceptional virtuosity and deep musicality. Brahms finished his Second Symphony directly on the heels of his First, but it would be hard to find two more different works. Occasionally referred to as his ‘Pastoral’ symphony, it is of a much happier and lighter nature, and it was immediately taken to the hearts of Viennese audiences, with its sunny themes and numerous dance-like melodies – gentle and lyrical. In their simple beauty the themes give the impression of having been written down in inspired spontaneity. Berg was not a musician of revolutionary temperament. On the contrary, he had great reverence for musical tradition, demonstrated in his Violin Concerto which draws substance from, and pays homage to, the musical past. Throughout the work Berg uses the Lutheran chorale It is Enough to form repeated phrases before ending in peaceful reverence; this perhaps explains Berg’s dedication “to the memory of an angel.” Johann Strauss’ sweeping waltz conjures the elegance of the Viennese dancehalls.

When Shostakovich wrote his first piano trio, he was smitten; his longing for a fellow student peers out from behind the trio’s yearning melodies. ‘You won’t have heard such a beautiful trio from me,’ wrote Brahms to his publisher of his own C major trio, a work that could easily sweep you off your feet. Reena Esmail wrote her own piano trio Saans as a wedding gift for a close friend, while the sublime slowness of Schubert’s nocturne for piano trio could easily accompany a tryst. No less beauteous is Jennifer Higdon’s trio exploring whether colours and their shades can be reflected in music.

Kazakh pianist Dina makes a welcome return to our series with four timeless sets of variations. Based on a simple violin theme, Bach’s epic Chaconne was transformed into this brilliant showpiece by Italian composer Feruccio Busoni in 1916. Also creating a dazzling display from simple elements are Mozart’s delightful variations on ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. Schubert’s dramatic variations on his ‘Rosamunde’ theme build tension by appearing to rush towards the finale. Dina ends with Brahms’s variations on the famous Caprice by Paganini. With rich invention and startling originality, Clara Schumann referred to them as ‘witches’ variations’.
