Join us for an enlightening session on "Promoting Gender Equity in Music: A Conversation with Dr. Joy-Leilani Garbutt," hosted by the Upper Valley Music Center. This free event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm EDT and will be presented on Zoom, with a potential in-person option, weather permitting. Dr. Joy-Leilani Garbutt, the co-founder of the Boulanger Initiative and a fervent advocate for gender equity in music, will lead the conversation. She will discuss the mission of the Boulanger Initiative, its efforts to enhance equity and representation in music, and how their ongoing research and advocacy projects are making diverse repertoire more accessible to students, performers, and teachers. The initiative focuses on advocating for women and gender-marginalized composers through various channels including performance, education, research, consulting, and commissions.

Dr. Garbutt's credentials include a Ph.D. in musicology, a Master of Education degree from The Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Master of Music in organ performance from Northwestern University. She is also a Fulbright scholar who has conducted extensive research in France on early 20th-century French organ music by female composers.

This event is part of a series that includes Dr. Garbutt’s performance at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College on April 5, as part of the Ives Recital Series.

We have so much to celebrate this season - The BI Database reaching its one-year anniversary, Women’s History Month, Our 6th-annual WoCo fest coming up in April, but most of all the 40th Birthday of our Co-Founder, Artistic and Executive Director, Dr. Laura Colgate.

This concert, performed by our two co-founders, will be a festive occasion to celebrate all that BI has done so far and look forward to all of the exciting things to come. The program will include works for violin and organ by Alexandra Gardner, Lili Boulanger, Amy Beach, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Florence Price, Isabella Leonarda, and more! We will also be premiering a new piece by Julie Zhu, commissioned by the BI family in honor of Laura’s 40th.
