Beethoven began work on the Eighth in the summer of 1812, immediately after the completion of his Seventh Symphony. Martin Geck describes the Eighth as containing “all the relevant hallmarks, including motivic and thematic writing notable for its advanced planning, defiant counterpoint, furious cross-rhythms, sudden shifts from piano to forte, and idyllic and even hymnlike episodes.” The orchestra will then perform Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. This work combines elements of Western art music and Eastern European folk music, especially that of Hungary, and it departs from traditional tonality, often using non-traditional modes and artificial scales.

This work will follow Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture. Schumann and Brahms were tied together personally and professionally. Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 was written in 1841, then greatly revised and published in 1851. In 1891, however, Brahms, who much preferred the first version, published it against the wishes of Schumann’s wife, Clara. Montgomery’s work is inspired by the mosaic of dance music found in New York’s various subcultures, from samba to techno, English consort to mbira; Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony–famously referred to as the “apotheosis of the dance” by Richard Wagner–is infused with driving, dance-like rhythms throughout, especially in the outer movements. Festival Orchestra: Beethoven & Brahms

Britten Sinfonia returns to the Peasmarsh Festival with a captivating programme that traces the evolution of orchestral music from the classical elegance of Haydn to the romantic expressiveness of the late nineteenth century. The evening opens with Haydn's Sinfonia Concertante in Bb major, a delightful piece that showcases the interplay between violin, cello, oboe, and bassoon. Following this, the poignant Élégie for cello and orchestra by Fauré offers a moment of introspective beauty, highlighting the cello's lyrical capabilities. Dvořák's Romance for violin and orchestra in F minor continues the journey with its heartfelt melodies and rich orchestration. The concert culminates in Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, a work that heralds the composer's early mastery and hints at the revolutionary symphonic innovations to come.
