Conceived after conversations during some of the darker moments of the pandemic, Conor and Nico have collaborated on several works, including the previously premiered first set of six études performed at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA.

This unique Pop-Up Concert celebrates the 100th birthday of György Ligeti, featuring his Horn Trio, a piece written in honor of Johannes Brahms' 150th birthday. Alongside Ligeti's monumental work, the Takt Trio will perform two brand new horn trios by contemporary composers Marcos Balter and Hilda Paredes, commissioned especially for this occasion. American Modern Opera Company’s (AMOC) production of contemporary composer John Adams’ El Niño: Nativity Reconsidered with libretto by Peter Sellars and concept by Julia Bullock is a chamber music arrangement created and conducted by Christian Reif and was first performed at The Met Cloisters in 2018 in the beautiful San Martín at Fuentidueña chapel. The New York Times calls it “intimate, affecting and quietly rich with activism.” This rarely performed work celebrates Latin American poets and voices of women. Says Julia Bullock, “one of opera’s fastest-rising stars” (Vanity Fair), who curated the selections being performed and will sing in the performance, “El Niño: Nativity Reconsidered ruminates on the notion that with the promise of new life, there is the equal threat of inexplicable violence and sacrifice.”

This unique, free event invites you to open your ears and discover a fascinating array of sounds through the Sonic Innovations exhibition and live performances, all set within the picturesque grounds of Caramoor in Katonah, NY.

The event kicks off at 12:00 pm, offering a full day of innovative sound art and performances. Highlights include a theremin demonstration and performance by Dorit Chrysler, who will also lead a workshop on this oldest electronic instrument. Experience the multi-percussion piece "Rebonds" by Iannis Xenakis, performed by Jonny Allen, and delve into John Cage's complete "Sonatas and Interludes" for prepared piano, a performance that transforms the grand piano into an orchestra of unique sounds.

Throughout the day, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the sound artists behind the Sonic Innovations exhibition, engage in a theremin workshop, and enjoy performances that span the gamut from electronic music to avant-garde piano preparations. The event takes place across various venues on the Caramoor grounds, most of which do not have seating, so guests are encouraged to bring their own if desired.

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect series, AMOC* invites you to an evening of close listening and engagement with sound, silence, movement, and space. With performances of compositions by Michael Pisaro, Jennifer Walshe, Jürg Frey, Carolyn Chen, and more, artists will explore physical awareness, attention to each other, and the spontaneity of personal and collective responses. Listeners are encouraged to begin arriving when doors open at 7pm to engage with Pisaro’s “Space” and other pieces of music.

Anton Bruckner never heard his Sixth Symphony performed in full, but he proudly described it as his “boldest symphony.” Still overlooked today, it is awash in beautiful themes and imaginative twists and turns. Opening this program led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, pianist Conor Hanick premieres an SF Symphony commission by Samuel Adams, known for his expressive, innovative, and genre-bending music.

In addition to Julia Bullock and Conor Hanick’s performance of this sweeping work, this production breaks open Messiaen’s musical explorations of love and death into a newly physicalized and theatrical dimension.

Showcase Series: Faculty Artists Concert 2

A rare performance of The Book of Sounds, a remarkable cycle of 12 solo piano pieces written between 1979 to 1982 by the pioneering German composer, pianist, poet and visual artist Hans Otte (1926-2007). The work is a mesmerizing exploration of sound, shaped by Otte’s immersion in both European and Eastern spirituality as well as his championing of such composers as John Cage, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass.

The Book of Sounds

This program features the first Ojai Festival performance of music by Andrew McIntosh, one of Southern California’s most vital and distinctive musical voices. Pianists Conor Hanick and Matthew Aucoin and percussionists Jonny Allen and Mari Yoshinaga will perform McIntosh’s Little Jimmy, a 30-minute work inspired by a visit the composer made to a backpackers’ camp called Little Jimmy, located on Mt. Islip in the Angeles National Forest.

A cycle of mini-concertos commissioned by the Ojai Festival, Family Dinner aims to capture the raucous, joyful energy of a multi-course dinner with beloved friends. The music ranges from introspective to riotously dancelike; it is also punctuated by spoken “toasts” composed by writers and thinkers who are collaborators of AMOC’s artists.

In celebration of Carlos Izcaray’s 10 years as Music Director of the ASO, the orchestra will perform an anniversary program featuring works Maestro Izcaray conducted at his opening concert in 2013. La Péri, written in 1911, and was Dukas’ last published work is not as well known as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, this ballet has been considered to be one of his most mature and skilled pieces. Then, Pianist Conor Hanick, regarded as one of his generation’s most inquisitive interpreters of music, performs the world premiere of Carlos Izcaray’s Piano Concerto. Symphonie fantastique returns to the ASC stage for the first time since 2019! Programmatic in nature, it tells the story of a gifted artist who, in the depths of hopeless and despair because of his unrequited love for a woman, has poisoned himself with opium. Witness the artist’s drug-induced hallucinations, beginning with a ball and a scene in a field and ending with a recognizable “march to the scaffold” and a satanic dream.
