The atmospheric and deeply spiritual music of Arvo Pärt has made him one of the world’s most performed and beloved composers. Alfred Schnittke, meanwhile, saw himself as a musical link to Mozart, Schubert, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. This concert features works by both composers – music rich in emotional intensity. Arvo Pärt turns 90 this year (on 11 September).

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra makes a summer guest appearance at Stockholm City Hall this Sunday afternoon in August, marking the centenary of the City Hall organ in the Blue Hall – the largest pipe organ in Scandinavia. The instrument was inaugurated in 1925, two years after the building itself was completed.

The American conductor Marin Alsop will be guesting at Berwaldhallen again, treating us to music with a literary inspiration together with the Swedish Radio Choir and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Samuel Barber’s beautiful Essay for Orchestra No. 2 will be followed by Leonard Bernstein’s choral work Chichester Psalms with its rhythmically intricate vocal parts. We will also hear Dmitri Shostakovich’s highly personal Symphony No. 5, the finale of which is inspired by Alexander Pushkin’s poem Vozrozhdenie (Rebirth).
