Eroica means ‘heroic’, and Beethoven was inspired to write his explosive new symphony by the exploits of Napoleon Bonaparte. ‘If I understood war like I understand music, I would conquer him!’ he declared. Two centuries on, the ‘Eroica’ is the thrilling climax to a concert that positively buzzes with energy and colour – in other words, exactly what you’d expect from this great Hungarian orchestra and its dynamic Italian chief conductor Ricardo Frizza.

Lauded as one of ’16 Incredibly Impressive Students at Princeton University’ by Business Insider, American pianist Edward Leung has performed solo recitals and appeared with orchestras across North America, Europe, and Asia. 

Highlights of the previous season included a sold-out Wigmore Hall recital, chamber music performances with Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber, Simon Callaghan, and members of Philharmonia Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic. His debut album on Resonus Classics was critically acclaimed by BBC Music Magazine and featured on ABC Classic’s Festival of Female Composers and SWR2 Treffpunkt Klassik. Domonkos Csabay is a UK-based Hungarian concert pianist, chamber musician and accompanist. He studied with András Kemenes and István Lantos at the Liszt Academy Budapest, and is a graduate of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where his professors were Pascal Nemirovski and John Thwaites.

He has made several concerto appearances and has been invited to many prestigious venues and festivals, such as the Budapest Spring Festival or the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival.

Competition successes include 1st prize at the Lyon International Chamber Music competition in 2022 and 1st prize at the Birmingham International Piano Competition in 2016 and special award in the Budapest Liszt Competition in 2021, as well as prizes won as a composer in Romania and as member of a Lied duo in Wales. His performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and on Hungarian Radio

Trio Gaspard has championed the entire breadth of piano trio repertoire to become one of the most sought-after trios of its generation, praised for its unique and fresh approach to the score. ‘A truly refreshing performance! Richly coloured, honest, full of joy and with good agogics! This trio belongs to another league! Ensemble magazine. Founded in 2010, the trio’s members hail from Germany, Greece, and the UK. As well as exploring well-known classics, the players work with contemporary composers and research seldom-played masterpieces. Committed to commissioning new works, in this concert they perform a piece they have commissioned from the Moldovan composer and violinist  Patricia Kopatchinskaja. They conclude Manchester Chamber Concert’s season with Schubert’s Trio No. 1 described as  pouring out a stream of spontaneous melody. From its soaring opening theme to the sublimated echoes of Viennese popular music in the finale, the music exudes life-affirming energy.

This concert marks an important moment in Nottingham Classics history, being the first performance to feature our resident orchestra’s new Principal Conductor, the prodigious Singaporean, Kahchun Wong. In a marker of his direction of travel he mixes Asian sounds with two western classical masterpieces.
