Ryan Bancroft leads Copland’s Third Symphony with its quintessential folk-inspired melodies and the famous Fanfare for the Common Man. Valerie Coleman opens with Umoja , a vibrant hymn to unity and peace. This short but intense introduction, inspired by African traditions, deploys a rhythmic and melodic energy that ideally prepares us for the works to come. Then comes American lyricism with Samuel Barber's Cello Concerto , magnificently served by the sensitive playing of Maximilian Hornung. Alternating virtuoso passages and profound melancholy, this work reveals the full expressive range of the cello, dialoguing with an orchestra that is by turns tender and tumultuous. As a grand finale, Brahms' Symphony No. 1 displays its beautiful architecture and tormented lyricism. After fifteen years of doubt, the composer delivers a masterful response to Beethoven's legacy, culminating in a finale with a triumphant theme that has become legendary.

Currently serving as the principal flute of the Seattle Symphony, McGill has also appeared as a soloist with many of the nation’s leading orchestras. This performance is presented in collaboration with SFCM alumni, faculty, and students.

From the shimmering heights of the piccolo to the rich depths of the bass flute, the duo’s program explores the flute family’s range through a variety of works that include solos and duets, as well as a piece for flute choir. Two composers featured—Valerie Coleman and Ian Clarke—are familiar names in ROCO’s repertoire, from an earlier Unchambered performance and a livestreamed solo performance by Ferguson. The rest of the program features composers making their ROCO debut: Adina Izarra’s Plumismo for piccolo solo, Franz & Karl Doppler’s Rigoletto Fantasy for 2 flutes & piano, and Yuko Uebayashi’s Au-Delà du Temps for 2 flutes & piano.

The duo will also be joined by ROCO pianist Audrey Andrist for several works, and by local Houston flute ensemble Flutes on the Bayou as guest artists for the performance of Valerie Coleman’s Juba for flute choir.

Conducted for the first time by Sir Simon Rattle, together they perform Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony: over 50 minutes of brutality, violence, despair and terror, followed by two minutes of triumph. A portrait of life – and death – in Stalin’s Russia, it’s a fierce act of musical testimony. Bearing witness is also central to Pulitzer-winner George Walker’s Sinfonia No. 5, a work ‘suffused with anger’, raging against the 2015 Charleston church massacre. The Chineke! Orchestra, whose motto is “championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music,” is one of Britain’s most exciting new orchestras. It was founded in London in 2015 by double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE to provide career opportunities at the highest level for Black and ethnically diverse classical musicians in the UK and Europe. They are currently a Resident Orchestra at London’s Southbank Centre, and their 2023 BBC Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall featured musicians from 40 different countries. They have performed to great critical acclaim at leading European festivals such as the Lucerne and Edinburgh Festivals, as well as in the US and Canada. Zimbabwean-born conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni, Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies and Contemporary Music at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, is widely sought after by top orchestras around the globe for his depth of approach, interpretive imagination, and expressivity. For its Santa Barbara debut, the Chineke! Orchestra presents an evening of compelling works by Black composers, and Franz Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat featuring Aaron Azunda Akugbo, a founding member of Connaught Brass.

Maestra Mei-Ann Chen weaves notions of devotion and adoration through a symphonic lens, featuring compositions by six distinctly different composers, representing historic men and modern women. "Umoja," meaning unity in Swahili and the first principle of Kwanzaa, was originally composed as a simple song for a women's choir. It conveys a sense of tribal unity through a drum circle feel, traditional call-and-response, and a memorable, repetitive melody. It was rearranged into a woodwind quintet (then for orchestra in 2020) for Coleman's GRAMMY-award-winning group, Imani Winds, to serve as an anthem celebrating the ensemble's diverse heritages.

The Ancient Greeks believed that the flute was the oldest of all musical instruments, created by the god Pan himself. Debussy’s retelling of that myth is at the heart of this ravishing recital from the Orchestra’s flautist Helen Wilson: an evening of magical melody and wondrous new sounds.

Theofanidis's Rainbow Body transports listeners through ethereal textures and spiritual motifs, leading to a finale of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, a monumental work of intense emotional landscapes.

Witness the Carnegie Hall debut of Louis Langrée—a conductor especially beloved in New York for his 21-year tenure as music director of Mostly Mozart—as he leads one of the city’s great ensembles: Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL). The concert opens with a pair of exciting firsts, including the Carnegie Hall premiere of Valerie Coleman’s Fanfare for Uncommon Times, commissioned and originally premiered by the ensemble in 2021. Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major follows, shining a welcome spotlight on Sterling Elliott. Previously an OSL member, Elliott is now a prominent, award-winning cellist, and this performance marks his debut as a soloist with the ensemble. The Boise Phil Youth Orchestras provide outstanding musical training and experiences to over 250 talented young musicians throughout the Treasure Valley. All three orchestras (Symphonic, Concert, and Strings) are under the direction of Music Director Jennifer Drake. Our young musicians attend weekly rehearsals, receive professional coaching from Boise Phil orchestra musicians, and perform throughout the year in our community. Tuition scholarships are available for any student in need.
