The program opened with an unexpected Vivaldi: his Concerto for Two Cellos RV 531 , reimagined for cello (Cyrille Tricoire De Haro) and bassoon (Rodolphe Bernard). A rare dialogue between two instruments, between Baroque virtuosity and the complicity of the soloists. Mendelssohn then unfolded the legend of La Belle Mélusine , a fairy-tale overture with melodious waves. Ravel, with his Menuet antique , revived the grace of a bygone era, while Debussy, in Nuages ​​(from the Nocturnes ), suspended the sky in its luminous grays. As a grand finale, Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony burst forth in vibrant fanfares and majestic dances. A night of stars, breaths, and strings.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi certainly had no idea that almost three centuries later he would still be one of the most famous composers in the history of music. The successor of the masters of composition of the so-called Venetian school, music teacher and concertmaster in the prestigious orchestra of the Venetian girls' orphanage Ospedale della Pietá, and a renowned instrumentalist throughout Europe, he created over three and a half hundred instrumental concertos. The orchestra of the institution financed by the Venetian Republic was obliged to perform at masses and religious and secular celebrations, several times a month, which is why Vivaldi's creative period was unusually fruitful. Evil tongues claim that he copied individual compositions himself. The largest part of them is, of course, intended for the violin. They demonstrate an exceptionally rich melodic invention and Vivaldi's great feeling for the character of instrumental stylization.

In a programme dedicated to recorder concertos, the name of Antonio Vivaldi is an indispensable reference: the author of an impressive number of concertos, well beyond the famous Four Seasons, Vivaldi shaped a language that profoundly marked 18th-century Europe. Alongside him, composers such as Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Friedrich Fasch and Giovanni Battista Sammartini were able to offer original and refined interpretations of the concerto form, in an extraordinary variety of styles and formal solutions. It is perhaps surprising that the recorder, often considered an instrument with a limited repertoire, should have been the vehicle for such a rich and international production, capable of reflecting different national identities and, at the same time, an authentically European spirit, even verging on the galant style. This programme thus highlights, together, the concerto as a musical form and the recorder as solo instrument, revealing its expressive breadth and vitality. At the heart of this project is also the theme of cultural exchange between Italy and the Netherlands: many of Vivaldi's works were published in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 18th century by the famous publisher Estienne Roger, spreading rapidly throughout Europe and profoundly influencing the musical taste of the time. More than three hundred years later, this ideal dialogue is renewed in the encounter between the flutist Teun Wisse and the Ensemble Locatelli, an artistic partnership born of a shared passion for this repertoire and matured through concerts in various European countries, culminating in a programme designed to celebrate Vivaldi and the immediate and communicative pleasure of a music that, then as now, thrives on energy, exchange and shared joy.

The barking of a dog, the buzzing of flies, a drunkard staggering home: these are just a few of the pictures ingeniously painted in Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Published in 1725, his set of four violin concertos was staggeringly ahead of its time, a forerunner to the ‘programme music’ of Liszt, Berlioz and Richard Strauss over a century later.

Still, it is the musical backdrop to these events – the atmosphere Vivaldi creates across the length of each concerto – that sticks with the listener longest. This rich, shimmering collection is a celebration of contrasts: from spring’s freshness and summer’s heat to the mellow fruitfulness of autumn and the chill of winter.

There are seasons all over the world, but depending on where we are, they look – or sound – different. Around 300 years ago, Antonio Vivaldi set spring, summer, autumn, and winter to music in a "European" way in his concert cycle "The Four Seasons." Kala Ramnath, in turn, explores the seasons of her home country India (divided into six periods) in her composition "Indian Seasons," arranged by the accomplished composer and sitar player Indro Roy-Chowdhury. Following the opening concert – together with the celebrated percussionist Bickram Ghosh – the master of the Indian violin will then contrast her musical impressions of the cycle of the seasons with Vivaldi's famous concertos. Both works will enter into a global, not merely meteorological, dialogue – at the height of the Duisburg spring – which is thematically complemented by Kala Ramnath's new work "Panchabhoota – The Voice of Nature." In five movements, the composer deals with the classical Indian pentad of the primal elements ether (Akash), air (Vayu), fire (Agni), water (Āpas) and earth (Prithvi).

Antonio Vivaldi is known across all continents today. Among other things, he has his four violin concertos from his Opus 8 of 1725 to thank for this, which are considered to symbolise the art of Baroque music-making. Vivaldi himself summarised them as the ‘Four Seasons’ and under this title they are still among the best-known works from the Baroque period. Very virtuosic and full of small and large affects, they present the great wealth of colour of their era. These violin concertos are made for the top Dutch violinist Janine Jansen and the Camerata Salzburg, because rediscovering the classics of music history is their speciality. We can look forward to the breath of fresh air that the musicians, who are well attuned to each other, will blow through the familiar scores in May. One of perhaps two handfuls of the most famous works in the entire history of music is exactly 300 years old – and still enjoys immense popularity: Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" is actually a collection of four violin concertos that capture the seasons in impressively audible tones. Spring thunders and lightning, summer suffers from the heat, farmers celebrate in autumn, and winter bites with cold. We hear the forces of nature, animal sounds, and human life in the cycle of a year. Host Thomas Scholz takes the young listeners on a journey through Vivaldi's masterpiece, which not only demonstrates the capabilities of program music, but also the versatility of a solo violin's sound.

Janine Jansen has no problem playing popular works like Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" again and again, because, as she says, "ultimately, every interpretation is unique." The CAMERATA audience can also expect such unique performances when the orchestra's artistic partner embarks on an adventurous and atmospheric journey through the Italian seasons of the early 18th century, still unclouded by climate change. The music magazine Stereoplay praised Janine Jansen's performance of "The Seasons" as "a completely natural, breathing flow." Janine Jansen also brings two other great Italian Baroque violinists into play, bundled together in one work: Vivaldi's contemporary Geminiani reworked a violin sonata by Corelli on the voluptuous Portuguese dance "folía" into a brilliant concerto grosso. Jansen and the CAMERATA will demonstrate how productive this concert form still is in our time in a string concerto by film music king Nino Rota from 2007 and a charming concerto combination for string quartet, string orchestra and harpsichord by Richard Dubugnon from 2020.

What hardly anyone knows: nowhere else (outside Argentina) is as much tango played and danced as in Finland, nowhere else in the world is so much coffee and milk drunk, and what was previously only known to the initiated: one of the best baroque orchestras comes from Helsinki! In 1989, news of the historically-informed performance practice also reached Finland; young professional musicians founded an ensemble that was called the ‘Sixth Floor Orchestra’ for 20 years, named after the practice room (without a lift!). Initially they gave guest performances in neighbouring Scandinavia, but the unconventional group soon made a name for itself in Canada and China with excellent reviews. They have brought Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann with them to the concert in Frankfurt, where the overture, concerto and suite will give them ample opportunity to demonstrate how double dotting, ornamentation and historically informed bowing is done in Finland. The connection with water and tides is certainly felt more intensely on the Nordic coasts, which is why Telemann's orchestral suite ‘Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth’ from 1732 is a fitting homage to the all-connecting ocean. The Belgian formalist Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker — one of the world's most celebrated choreographers — ignites the Walker stage with her ecstatic collaboration featuring rising Moroccan-Belgian star Radouan Mriziga. It is truly virtuosic and at times features two recorders being played at once! Michael Abels’ More Seasons is a modern interpretation of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, specifically “Spring” and “Summer,” but with a “maniacal, Minimalist abuse” of the original themes, as Abels himself has stated. It’s often described as “Vivaldi in a Mixmaster.” A review of the first performance stated that Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto “is the most admirable, singular, artistic and complex Beethoven concerto ever.” Written in 1855 at the age of 17 and never played during his lifetime, Bizet’s Symphony in C was “discovered” in 1933. It has been in the symphonic repertoire ever since due to its beautiful melodies, rich orchestration, and elegant charm.
