Rong-Yan Tang, a celebrated musician known for her performances on the CSO’s Chamber Music series and educational concerts at Chicago Public Schools, brings her exceptional skills to the forefront as a soloist. Her previous appearances include recitals at the Art Institute of Chicago and broadcasts on WFMT-FM, as well as performances with regional orchestras.

When we talk about the great Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi , we immediately think of his four-concert series "Seasons" - it's not for nothing that this piece is not only the best-known opus in the composer's oeuvre, but one of the most well-known works in the world !


The composer named each concert: "Spring", "Summer", "Autumn" and "Winter" , and it begins with a sonnet that brings the listeners into the special mood of each season, and the music also follows the images of the sonnets exactly. The author of these sonnets is still shrouded in mystery, but it is assumed that the poetry was written by Vivaldi himself.

Michala Petri is one of Denmark's most recognized soloists, and her talent on the recorder is legendary. Since her debut as a mere 11-year-old in Tivoli's Concert Hall in 1969, with her virtuosity and passion for the recorder, she has conquered the world's music stages and left her mark on the world of classical music for over 50 years. Now she dives once again into her absolute specialty: the magical universe of the Baroque. The concert will open with Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco's Sinfonia in D Major, Op. 6, No. 12, a piece that showcases the composer's intricate style with movements ranging from the lively Allegro to the more subdued Grave. Following this, the audience will be treated to George Frideric Handel's Concerto Grosso in A minor, a work that exemplifies Handel's genius in the concerto grosso form with its contrasting moods and textures.

The program also includes Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer's Concerto Grosso No.1 in G major, a piece that combines elegance with expressive depth, and Pietro Antonio Locatelli's Concerto Grosso in E flat major, known as "il Pianto d'Arianna," which is celebrated for its emotional range and the virtuosic demands it places on the soloists.

After the intermission, the ensemble will perform Arcangelo Corelli's Concerto Grosso in C minor, a work that is quintessential Corelli, with its beautiful melodies and harmonious balance. Georg Philipp Telemann's Quintet Sinfonia Spirituosa in D major will follow, showcasing Telemann's innovative approach to composition. Our season comes to a close with Four Seasons, featuring four choreographers, each with their own distinct style. After a critically-acclaimed debut in 2019, Disha Zhang’s Elapse returns to the stage for an encore not to be missed. Exploring the idea of aging and the passage of time, her first piece choreographed for an American company is set to a captivating original score by Zeng Xiaogang. George Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is described by New York City Ballet as “an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.” Welch’s The Four Seasons dramatizes the stages of a woman’s life from the vigor of youth in spring to the introspection of old age in winter. Set to Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved score of the same name, the large ensemble work returns for the first time since its premiere in 2007. Rounding out the program is a world premiere by Dwight Rhoden, Founding Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Complexions Contemporary Ballet – his first for Houston Ballet. Rhoden has created works for notable companies such as New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and The Washington Ballet.

The repertoire includes Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata No. 2 in A Major, RV 31, a piece that embodies the essence of Baroque music with its intricate melodies and harmonies. Following this, the audience will be treated to Johannes Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 100, a work that captures the romantic spirit with its lyrical themes and rich textures. The finale of the concert will be Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35, a masterpiece known for its technical demands and emotional expressiveness.
