The barking of a dog, the buzzing of flies, a drunkard staggering home: these are just a few of the pictures ingeniously painted in Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Published in 1725, his set of four violin concertos was staggeringly ahead of its time, a forerunner to the ‘programme music’ of Liszt, Berlioz and Richard Strauss over a century later.

Still, it is the musical backdrop to these events – the atmosphere Vivaldi creates across the length of each concerto – that sticks with the listener longest. This rich, shimmering collection is a celebration of contrasts: from spring’s freshness and summer’s heat to the mellow fruitfulness of autumn and the chill of winter.

There are seasons all over the world, but depending on where we are, they look – or sound – different. Around 300 years ago, Antonio Vivaldi set spring, summer, autumn, and winter to music in a "European" way in his concert cycle "The Four Seasons." Kala Ramnath, in turn, explores the seasons of her home country India (divided into six periods) in her composition "Indian Seasons," arranged by the accomplished composer and sitar player Indro Roy-Chowdhury. Following the opening concert – together with the celebrated percussionist Bickram Ghosh – the master of the Indian violin will then contrast her musical impressions of the cycle of the seasons with Vivaldi's famous concertos. Both works will enter into a global, not merely meteorological, dialogue – at the height of the Duisburg spring – which is thematically complemented by Kala Ramnath's new work "Panchabhoota – The Voice of Nature." In five movements, the composer deals with the classical Indian pentad of the primal elements ether (Akash), air (Vayu), fire (Agni), water (Āpas) and earth (Prithvi).

Antonio Vivaldi is known across all continents today. Among other things, he has his four violin concertos from his Opus 8 of 1725 to thank for this, which are considered to symbolise the art of Baroque music-making. Vivaldi himself summarised them as the ‘Four Seasons’ and under this title they are still among the best-known works from the Baroque period. Very virtuosic and full of small and large affects, they present the great wealth of colour of their era. These violin concertos are made for the top Dutch violinist Janine Jansen and the Camerata Salzburg, because rediscovering the classics of music history is their speciality. We can look forward to the breath of fresh air that the musicians, who are well attuned to each other, will blow through the familiar scores in May. And even more virtuoso baroque music can be experienced in this concert when Francesco Geminiani's Concerto grosso in D minor is performed that evening in the Alte Oper. (Pro Arte Frankfurt)

Janine Jansen has no problem playing popular works like Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" again and again, because, as she says, "ultimately, every interpretation is unique." The CAMERATA audience can also expect such unique performances when the orchestra's artistic partner embarks on an adventurous and atmospheric journey through the Italian seasons of the early 18th century, still unclouded by climate change. The music magazine Stereoplay praised Janine Jansen's performance of "The Seasons" as "a completely natural, breathing flow." Janine Jansen also brings two other great Italian Baroque violinists into play, bundled together in one work: Vivaldi's contemporary Geminiani reworked a violin sonata by Corelli on the voluptuous Portuguese dance "folía" into a brilliant concerto grosso. Jansen and the CAMERATA will demonstrate how productive this concert form still is in our time in a string concerto by film music king Nino Rota from 2007 and a charming concerto combination for string quartet, string orchestra and harpsichord by Richard Dubugnon from 2020.

What hardly anyone knows: nowhere else (outside Argentina) is as much tango played and danced as in Finland, nowhere else in the world is so much coffee and milk drunk, and what was previously only known to the initiated: one of the best baroque orchestras comes from Helsinki! In 1989, news of the historically-informed performance practice also reached Finland; young professional musicians founded an ensemble that was called the ‘Sixth Floor Orchestra’ for 20 years, named after the practice room (without a lift!). Initially they gave guest performances in neighbouring Scandinavia, but the unconventional group soon made a name for itself in Canada and China with excellent reviews. They have brought Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann with them to the concert in Frankfurt, where the overture, concerto and suite will give them ample opportunity to demonstrate how double dotting, ornamentation and historically informed bowing is done in Finland. The connection with water and tides is certainly felt more intensely on the Nordic coasts, which is why Telemann's orchestral suite ‘Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth’ from 1732 is a fitting homage to the all-connecting ocean. Michael Abels’ More Seasons is a modern interpretation of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, specifically “Spring” and “Summer,” but with a “maniacal, Minimalist abuse” of the original themes, as Abels himself has stated. It’s often described as “Vivaldi in a Mixmaster.” A review of the first performance stated that Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto “is the most admirable, singular, artistic and complex Beethoven concerto ever.” Written in 1855 at the age of 17 and never played during his lifetime, Bizet’s Symphony in C was “discovered” in 1933. It has been in the symphonic repertoire ever since due to its beautiful melodies, rich orchestration, and elegant charm.

He is the General Director and President of Opera Philadelphia, and the Artistic Director of SongStudio at Carnegie Hall. He has with appeared many of the world’s leading opera companies and orchestras including the Metropolitan Opera, Opera National de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Teatro Real, New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, LA Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble, and NDR at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, among others. He has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Versailles, Madison Square Garden, The Hollywood Bowl, Kabuki-Za Tokyo, The Guggenheim, The Park Avenue Armory, and Little Island. As a producer, he has created projects for The Paris Opera, The New York Philharmonic, The BBC Proms, WQXR, and St. Ann’s Warehouse among others. Costanzo graduated with honors from Princeton University, and Manhattan School of Music, where he is now on the board of trustees along with being on the board of National Black Theater. A winner of the Met Opera Competition and Operalia, Costanzo also has an Honorary Doctorate from Manhattan School of Music, a History Makers Award from the New York Historical, has been a visiting fellow Oxford University, and a distinguished visiting scholar at Harvard. He has been in a Merchant Ivory film and has a forthcoming book for Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.

The Broad Stage

The Folk Opera House will be the arena for Antonio Vivaldi's baroque opera Olympiaden. Here, athletes and artistic souls compete side by side in a pulsating and sporty drama of confusion – under the influence of big politics, sensual confusion and heartbreaking trials of friendship . Olympiaden is directed by the all-round artist Charlotte Engelkes.

In Olympiad , forbidden love, mistaken identities, murder plots and missing siblings come together in a musical showdown filled with adrenaline and movement. The plot revolves around the prince of Crete, Licida" class="css-u850">Licida, a charming but untrained rookie in the arena of love and sport. In order to win the heart of Princess Aristea, he is faced with the match of his life. He asks his well-trained friend, Megacle, to compete in his place. Megacle accepts the sporting challenge, unaware that he is about to compete away his own fiancé. At the same time, Licida's neglected fiancée Argena appears and things heat up both in the competition arena and in her emotional life. But anything can happen and everything can turn around - it is only in the final that it is decided.

The Olympiad

Celebrate Carnivale with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, led by violinist Gianpiero Zanocco. This program, titled A Venetian Duel of Bows, transports audiences to 18th-century Venice, showcasing the virtuosity and rivalry of the city’s great violinists. The program features concertos and sonatas by Vivaldi, Veracini, Tartini, and Locatelli, highlighting the dazzling technical displays and expressive melodies that characterized the Venetian Baroque style. Zanocco, who has been a member of the Venice Baroque Orchestra since 2003 and currently serves as its First Violin Shoulder, brings a deep understanding of the Venetian Baroque tradition and a remarkable technical command to this performance. This concert promises to be a vibrant and spirited celebration of Venetian musical heritage and of Venice’s Carnivale—with Venetian masks encouraged!

This concert is your chance to hear some of the most famous classical music ever written, live in Derby.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons depicts the passing of the year in evocative string music, from a barking dog in spring to an icy storm of winter. It takes a special violinist to bring it to life, and we have our own, Sophie Rosa, to perform it for you.

If that’s not enough Baroque’n’roll, we’ve also got Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 – with its second movement also known as the Air on a G String in a later adaptation. And for Baroque (coronation) anthems, we’re joined by Derby Cathedral Choir for music celebrating the coronation of King George II in 1727. Or, as you might know Handel’s Zadok The Priest, the music crowning Paris St Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City as the official anthem of the UEFA Champions League.

The Four Seasons, four evocative violin concerti by the Venetian composer, violinist, poet, and cleric Antonio Vivaldi (affectionately known as the Red Priest because of his flaming red hair), are considered the crown jewels of the Italian baroque. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote of the 1960 quartet on which the haunting Chamber Symphony is based, “When I die, no one will write music in my memory, so I decided to write it myself.” Heinrich Biber’s imaginative Battaglia is an early baroque soundscape of battle preparations, blunted by drunken musketeer songs, and war, ending with a mournful lament.

Music from the court of Versailles begins and ends this sparkling exploration of the baroque. Jonathan Cohen leads a slimmed-down BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and shows just how flexible this group of players can be, as they weave their way through a selection of dances, fugues and concertos.

In this cozy winter program, eight Apollo’s Fire musicians set sparks flying in virtuoso works of J.S. Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi, and more. Debra Nagy takes the spotlight in a lively Vivaldi oboe concerto, while Kathie Stewart and Alan Choo lead a fiery chamber performance of Bach’s Orchestral Suite no. 2. Viola da gambist HyunKun Cho steals the thunder in Marais’ famous Sonnerie de Sainte Geneviève, an imaginative showpiece evoking the sounds of church bells in Paris.

Derya Yıldırım and Avi Avital explore the connection between baroque, folklore and contemporary chamber music with the sonically experimental Ensemble Resonanz. Together they create an evening that rethinks traditions, tells stories and builds musical bridges – from Anatolia to Europe, between past and present.
