The most traditional way to celebrate Christmas is to turn to Gregorian chant. The Tallis Scholars do this in three different styles: the interpretation of it by the 12th century abbess Hildegard of Bingen (these are her own compositions); the living Gregorian tradition as shown in settings of the Salve regina and Nunc dimittis, and as adapted in the medieval popular song In dulci jubilo; and Arvo Pärt’s reimagining of this tradition, partly in the Orthodox view. In particular there is his Da pacem, where the alto voice quotes a whole chant melody, running from start to finish of the piece. For a thousand years, chant represented all there was of ‘classical’ music. And it remains second to none in evoking the atmosphere of the great feast days.

For example, Japanese pianist Gen Tomuro pays tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto, the recently deceased Japanese 'king of minimalism'. Arvo Pärt's captivating Für Alina completes the search for beauty in simplicity.

Together with a professional meditation specialist, Casco Phil's string quartet offers a counterbalance to our hectic, digital, hyper-fast daily lives. The search for inner peace is timeless, and Casco Phil's string quartet combines music by Johann Sebastian Bach with other greats who get maximum expression from minimal means. In this way, Casco Phil draws a common thread through three centuries of musical tranquility. The crowning glory is the enchanting Spiegel im Spiegel; not only the most performed work by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, but also one of the top hits in the Klara Top 100 for years. Together with violinist Elise Bertrand, Casco Phil invites his audience on a meditative journey through history, in search of inner peace and beauty.

BBC Philharmonic - Cracking Elgar’s Enigma Code 

Mozart wrote in a letter to his father that death is »the true, best friend of man« – which for Manfred Honeck is a »profound and significant statement«. The internationally sought-after conductor is known for his unmistakable and trend-setting style – and is also a charismatic and passionate artist who loves emotional depth: »If I had the choice between technical precision and emotional music, I would always choose the music.« The former violist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who once began his conducting career as Claudio Abbado’s assistant, has been a regular guest of ours for more than 30 years. This led to an intimate friendship – and as a result, he is now officially performing his first concert as our new honorary conductor. We are delighted to be performing one of his favourite programmes with him on Eternity Sunday, which is very moving and will certainly give food for thought: The equally »mysterious and divine moments« in Mozart's last work – the otherworldly beautiful requiem from 1791, which the composer worked on until his early death at the age of just 35 and was unable to complete. Manfred Honeck breaks the ritualistic confessional music abruptly at precisely that point after eight bars in the »Lacrimosa« – and complements and combines it in an incredibly comforting way with other poignant sound creations, texts from powerful biblical passages, letters by Mozart, poems, Gregorian chorales and the urging ringing of bells.

Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1 was performed so often on the same instrument that the keys started to move by themselves, as if played by a dedicated, though invisible, pianist. Holy water wasn’t enough to deter the ghostly musician, so the instrument was packed up and sent to the landfill (ghost included). Isata Kanneh-Mason performs this concerto with LMP, but reduces the chances of witchcraft by playing on a modern piano.

The surging passions of César Franck’s repurposed sonata perfectly complement the lyricism, humour, and prescient unrest that infiltrate the Shostakovich that precedes it. Together with Arvo Pärt’s mesmerising distillation of stillness, the Fauré centenary is affectionately acknowledged twice-over; Dvořák dips into nostalgic reverie; and remembering childhood, too, is Sérgio Assad, whose evocative Menino was originally composed for Yo-Yo Ma and guitar duo.

One of the world's most renowned choral ensembles, The Sixteen makes their Miller debut with a stunning program pairing works by William Byrd and Arvo Pärt. Though hailing from different eras, the two composers are both celebrated masters of sacred music, despite facing considerable persecution for their work. The program alternates between works from Byrd’s Cantiones Sacrae, including the mighty eight-voice motet Ad Dominum cum tribularer, and three works by Pärt that highlight his signature style, with its unique blend of ancient and modern.

Some things can be simply described as big. That applies to nearly every work by the great Austrian composer, Gustav Mahler, his first attempt at a symphony being no exception. In fact, he gave his Symphony No. 1 the title “Titan” in some early performances, a work demonstrating his transformation from a writer of Lieder (song) into fully-fledged symphonies. It is arguably the most impressive first symphony of any composer. The work is tuneful, and memorable in its message of life, nature, and heroic triumph. Perhaps this is why Mahler conducted this symphony more than any other of his compositions. We will contrast this monumental work with the reserved but also deeply felt music of Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt. His Fratres for Strings and Two Percussionists sets up a reflective mood to transition into the Mahler symphony. All in all, it’s a great way to launch a season!

Arvo Pärt's music is in many ways a rebellion against post-war classical music, which, roughly speaking, meant louder, faster, bigger and more of everything. Pärt's music is anything but – it is gentle, slow and insists on repetition and silence. The early music movement, of which Concerto Copenhagen is a leading part, was also created as a rebellion against the classical music scene in post-war Europe and - in many ways like Pärt - seeks originality in the simple and transparent, a humility towards the musical raw material and the shortest possible path from the musician's expression to the audience's impression.

The Irish Youth Choir, under Artistic Director Bernie Sherlock, is made up of Ireland's finest young singers between the ages of 18-28. It has been an important part of Irish musical life since 1982. Singers are recruited by audition, and meet during the summer course and workshop weekends throughout the year. The MSO will close out its Classics Series with Ludwig van Beethoven’s epic Symphony No. 9. This symphony has reached beyond concert halls across the globe and become part of popular culture, most notably with the “Ode to Joy” theme in the final movement. Featuring the MSO Chorus and four spectacular vocal soloists, this concert captures Beethoven’s vision of hope with power, and authenticity.

This concert has Rimma’s fingerprints—and fingers!—all over it! Not only did she curate it, she also leads the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and performs on all three works. First up is Arvo Pärt’s shimmering classical music “hit,” Fratres (Latin: Brethren), revealed through his tintinnabuli technique that immerses you in a meditative sound world. Then it’s Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto—no, not THAT one. The wunderkind wrote another one at age 12! Across borders and decades, its manuscript was “rediscovered” and premiered by the legendary Yehudi Menuhin. And now you’re the first OPO audience to hear it. Finally, Rimma and the Philharmonic’s strings crown this evening with enriched memories of Tchaikovsky’s beloved sunny-blue-skies-Florence.

Join us for an enchanting afternoon of chamber music at the "String Spring Fling," presented by the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (THSO). Under the artistic direction of Dr. David Bowden, the THSO Strings and Principal Harp, Melanie Mashner, will deliver a performance filled with lush string sounds and the warm beauty of harp vibrations. The concert will feature the return of Elina Rubio, our recent concertmaster, who will dazzle the audience with a solo performance of Ravel’s Tzigane Gypsy Dance. Additionally, Elina will join forces with our current concertmaster, Erina Buchholz, for a memorable rendition of the second movement of Bach’s Double Concerto.

The program also includes a variety of pieces that promise to captivate and delight, from waltzes and a Strauss polka played pizzicato to a mesmerizing new work by Caroline Shaw, Entr’acte for Strings, and the stunning Fratres by Arvo Pärt. The concert will conclude with a selection of pieces including a jig by Grainger, a Hoe-Down by Copland, and a beautiful harp concert aria featuring Melanie Mashner.

This 75 to 80-minute performance will be held without intermission, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the music. Following the concert, a VIP reception will offer the chance to meet and mingle with the musicians.

»Music with soul« – this is how the Estonian Arvo Pärt describes the time of Gregorian chants, which he often reflects in his contemplative »Tintinnabuli style«. His »Silouan‘s Song« from 1991 transposes this monk‘s prayer into the fluency of a string-only ensemble – the meditative music speaks from the poetically powerful words it carries: »My soul longs for the Lord, and in tears I seek him.« Then a new work by Erkki-Sven Tüür, who was born in 1959 on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa, will be heard – a fascinating artist who likes to tackle current social issues in his gripping pieces. So we can look forward with anticipation to the world premiere of his cello concerto, which we will perform together with Nicolas Altstaedt. On 10 March, our First Concertmaster Ilian Garnetz will perform the passionate violin concerto by Alexander Glazunov. Born in 1865, the composer was a wunderkind and was later titled the »Russian Brahms«: His indulgent works are characterised by an impeccable awareness of form, a sense of enchanting melody and a perfect art of richly coloured instrumentation. Although Tchaikovsky certainly saw a rival in Glazunov at the time, he admired his incredible talent – and wrote warmly to him: »Don't be angry with me, but I love you so much.« Both concert evenings conclude with Tchaikovsky's fifth symphony from 1888, which is permeated with a great sense of inner conflict – after all, he said that there was »not a single bar« that would not be »the reverberation of my innermost soul life«. And so the restless symphony is characterised by a fate motif: according to a diary entry, it represents »doubts, complaints, reproaches« – but at the end, the melancholic tone is transformed into optimistic confidence.

Major rising-star conductor Lahav Shani performs with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in their first collaboration at Carnegie Hall. The concert begins with the lush, enchanting minimalism of Arvo Pärt’s Swansong, whose long, soaring harmonies suggest its origins as choral music. The world-renowned Daniil Trifonov joins in Mozart’s Ninth Piano Concerto, “Jeunehomme,” often considered the composer’s first true masterpiece. The concert concludes with selections from Prokofiev’s timeless Romeo and Juliet.

Brahms’ German Requiem, which explores the grief and yearning experienced after the loss of a loved one, opens with a hushed and somber sound before transitioning to a comforting and ultimately triumphant mood. As is suggested by its title, the work is unique in its use of the German language, utilizing biblical text hand-selected by the composer rather than the traditional Catholic Latin text.
