Subscription Series II opens with a performance from a piano trio — this time, a Czech one. The Lobkowicz Trio, winners of the 2017 Czech Chamber Music Society Prize, returns to the audience with a diverse programme, primarily focused on composers working from the Romantic tradition. A notable departure will be a piece by Otomar Kvěch, renowned for his listener-friendly compositions as well as his pedagogical approach.

Rudolfinum

For over a century, the Czech Philharmonic is one of the great orchestras of Europe and has represented the pinnacle of Czech cultural achievement. In 1896, Antonín Dvořák conducted the orchestra’s debut performance at the Rudolfinum, still home to the orchestra’s Prague concerts. Led by renowned conductor Semyon Bychkov, the orchestra will perform two evenings of works by Dvořák, Smetana, and Mahler for their Koerner hall debuts.

The Royal Conservatory of Music

The Glagolitic Mass is one of the most powerful spiritual compositions in the history of music. Janáček was 72 when he set an Old Church Slavonic text to music whilst staying in the spa town Luhačovice. Under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, the Czech Philharmonic will perform it in another spa town: Karlovy Vary.

Spa Hotel Thermal

This time, chief conductor Semyon Bychkov has decided for an unsurprising but purely dramatic programming arch. We will hear concertos by Antonín Dvořák and Johannes Brahms, artistic colleagues and friends for many years. Czech Philharmonic concertmaster Jan Mráček will play Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, and at the piano in Brahms will be seven-time Grammy Award winner Emanuel Ax.
