Fretwork are the world’s leading consort of viols. For almost 40 years they have been exploring the core repertory of great English consort music, from Taverner to Purcell, and making classic recordings against which others are judged. They are also pioneers of contemporary music for viols, having commissioned over 40 pieces from composers as varied as Michael Nyman, Elvis Costello, Sir John Tavener and Nico Muhly. Tonight, by way of an introduction to this remarkable consort who haven’t played at St George’s for 15 years, they present a glorious mix of old and somewhat less old, playing music by Byrd, Debussy, Purcell, Nyman, Bach and, of course, Dave Brubeck (well, actually, Dave Brubeck’s saxophonist Paul Desmond).

The spells are undone, the lovers are united. Now Oberon weaves a new enchantment; an entertainment without parallel under the starlit canopy of a summer night. Purcell’s The Fairy Queen is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but not remotely as you know it – there’s no Shakespeare, for a start! – and for Harry Christophers of The Sixteen, it’s ‘undoubtedly Purcell’s greatest work for the London stage’.

This program will contain a variety of music whose structure or style is of British origin.   It will feature traditional English, Irish, and Scottish ballads as they made their way to early American settings, as well as dance forms of England borrowed by composers from other European countries.  Featured will be baroque triple harp, baroque violin/fiddle, dulcimer, tin whistle, baroque flute, and vocalists.
