Dubbed a musician of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by The New York Times, Conrad Tao has been playing Gershwin’s 1924 rhapsody with orchestras across the country for nearly two decades. “It’s emblematic of the time and place, but it’s also timeless,” says Tao. “Improvisation is baked into Rhapsody in Blue. There are places in the score where the orchestra rests, and the pianist just takes off. That’s one of the reasons it continues to resonate with audiences today.”

Alpesh Chauhan is the conductor at the Oslo Philharmonic’s folk festival at The Palace Square. The orchestra has a tradition of concerts outdoors, almost as long as the orchestra itself. They have performed at Holmenkollen, The City Hall Square, and Myraløkka more recently, before the first Palace Square concert in 2017. The evening continues with the lush, sweeping romanticism of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a work of unparalleled passion and virtuosity. We conclude this grand debut with the profound depth and monumental power of Brahms’s Symphony No. 4, marking a triumphant return to the Orpheum Theater.

Pain and pleasure play out on stage in symphonic color across three vigorous works. Anna Clyne’s Masquerade welcomes listeners to the pleasure gardens of 17th and 18th century Europe where attendees enjoy song, dance, and drink along paths winding through a beautiful landscape. Pleasure transforms into fiery passion with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, the only such piece in his repertoire, full of bittersweet longing for new love which concludes with a breakneck exchange between the violin and orchestra. Complimented by Stravinsky’s Petrushka (1947), the pains of the heart are played out on stage in two of the greatest pieces of their genres.

You'll hear her voice in the solo violin winding through all four movements, sensuous and impossible to resist. Be enchanted by one of the most captivating works in the entire symphonic canon. The Nashville Symphony is proud of its outstanding musicians, and in this program we feature one in the solo spotlight: principal cellist Kevin Bate in Camille Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1*, one of the most elegant pieces ever written for the instrument.

Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, Shostakovich’s irresistible Waltz, and a Mardi Gras–inspired flute concerto performed by Principal Flute Angela Reynolds set the stage with sparkle, swagger, and festive flair. Ravel’s swirling La Valse and Berlioz’s electrifying Symphonie Fantastique bring the masquerade to a thrilling close, blending glamour and drama in a celebration of orchestral imagination.

Fate & Fantasy, conducted by Otto Tausk, celebrates music's power to tell stories and summon vivid worlds. The concert opens with Anna Clyne's Masquerade, an energetic, sharply coloured piece inspired by eighteenth century promenade music and the spectacle of masked celebration. Tumultuous opening gestures give way to lyrical string writing, capturing the excitement, elegance and theatrical flair of music entwined with dance and disguise. Then we welcome, Stephen Hough to perform Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3.
