“Since my arrival in Oklahoma City I made it a point to tell Oklahoma Stories. We commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing with two original compositions. And we celebrated the opening of the First Americans Museum with music of Native American composers and artists. This coming May will be the 100th birthday of Civil Rights activist Clara Luper. Her leadership in 6 years of successful carefully planned nonviolent sit-in protests of downtown drugstore lunch counters overturned their policies of segregation. This concert features newest ICA members Sarah Carrillo, Principal Trumpet of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, and Oto Carrillo, horn player in the legendary Chicago Symphony Orchestra! In Joan Tower's Copperwave, the brass instruments interweave and surge through wavelike patterns. Chicago composer Stacy Garrop's Legends of Olympus depicts five Greek gods in a colorful story that highlights each brass instrument. One of America's greatest composers, Amy Beach's late Romantic Piano Quintet is dreamy and sensuous, crafted thoroughly well.

Inspired by an ancient tale and commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, Daphnis et Chloé is a Greek love story between a boy and a girl that has become one of the pillars of 20th Century orchestral writing. Suite No. 2 features what is widely regarded as one of the most satisfying endings in all music.

Czech-born composer Antonín Dvořák traveled our bustling urban centers and spacious rural landscapes at the end of the 19th century and wove a beautiful tapestry of American traditional styles with Western European symphonic traditions, leading to the work of Aaron Copland and Joan Tower. John Williams and Erich Korngold took that inspiration and created epic scores that have become the soundtracks of our lives. Violin superstar Elena Urioste takes to the stage with Michael Christie and the New West Symphony for this kaleidoscopic event celebrating America’s musical heritage.

From Joan Tower’s bold, vibrant fanfare through Schubert’s beloved "Unfinished" Symphony, this thought-provoking and beautiful concert invites us to explore what defines us. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, our 2021–22 season Artist-in-Residence, premieres a song cycle by American Joel Thompson and is joined by Broadway-film-cabaret performer Justin Vivian Bond for a set of songs that delve into questions of identity.

New Jersey Symphony brass and woodwinds shine in works showcasing their special sound and virtuosity. We kick off with a brand new fanfare from jazz master Wynton Marsalis, Joan Tower’s take on Copland’s vision and Dvořák’s beguiling serenade. The full orchestra sparkles in Copland’s homage to Abraham Lincoln, narrated by the great American bass-baritone Eric Owens.

There’s always magic when Emanuel Ax joins the Philharmonic, and this reunion will be all the more memorable thanks to a genuine masterpiece by Mozart: listen for the finale’s virtuosic variations on a birdcall. Joan Tower's six "Fanfares for the Uncommon Woman" are a tribute to "women who take risks and are adventurous," with each one dedicated to an inspiring woman in music. The first of these short pieces was inspired by Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and is dedicated to conductor Marin Alsop. In Prokofiev’s first symphony, which he named “Classical Symphony,” he loosely imitates the style of Haydn.

Composed while the Napoleonic Wars raged outside his door, Beethoven's heroic piano concerto receives a powerhouse performance from the world-renowned Yefim Bronfman, who brings "fire and poetry" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer) to each epic moment. And Duke Ellington connects past and present in the jazzy dreamscapes of Three Black Kings, his soulful tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.

From Corigliano, “This a capella choral work, composed in 1971, is a setting of Richard Wilbur’s translation of Baudelaire’s L’Invitation au Voyage. Wilbur’s poignant setting pictures a world of obsessive imagination — a drugged vision of heaven full of sensual imagery. The music echoes the quality of the repeated refrain found in this lush translation: ‘There, there is nothing else but grace and measure, richness, quietness and pleasure.’”

Marin Alsop guides the SF Symphony through an exhilarating journey that spans the United States, Venezuela, and Mexico, following the crosscurrents and commonalities of the countries’ many musical traditions. Gabriela Ortiz’s playfully seductive Antrópolis sets the stage while the Venezuelan composer and pianist Gabriela Montero performs her Piano Concerto No. 1, Latin. Paired fanfares by Aaron Copland and Joan Tower join with Samuel Barber's primal and propulsive Symphony No. 1 to bring it all back home.

The beautiful, dark red bassoons are given their rightful place at the front of the stage in this chamber concert, which features Dutch Kees Olthius's extremely welcoming study of the versatile-sounding deep woodwinds. Here is inventive and melodious play with rhythm and sound in a kind of double concerto for bassoon and contrabassoon with string quintet. It will be completely dark red on stage when four bassoons play an arrangement of Michel Corrette's Le Phenix – French baroque in new clothes. But the brightest of the woodwinds will also be involved when the flute as a soloist in Joan Towers' 'Rising' examines the tonal movement upwards in every imaginable way; how does music move up and what happens when you get all the way up there?
