Trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger, one of the world’s foremost performers on his instrument for nearly four decades, also joins the programme. Join us for an enchanting evening of trumpet mastery featuring Ari Rios, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the guidance of David Bilger. Mozart composed his opera “The Magic Flute” as an allegory for the Masonic initiation. In this program, FWSO brass deliver a bright arrangement of the opera’s Overture as well as offerings by composers Oskar Böhme and Kevin McKee. Also on the program are Elliot Carter’s grave Sonata for Piano and Cello as well as one of Britten’s first published works, the rarely heard Phantasy Oboe Quartet.

Few sounds evoke Christmas more vividly than those of brass instruments. For decades, the brass section of the Berliner Philharmoniker has cultivated a distinctive sound that is at once warm, festive and richly nuanced. This programme traces more than 400 years of atmospheric Christmas music, from the festive Baroque splendour of Giovanni Gabrieli via classical works by Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert to Romantic and modern compositions. And of course, no Christmas programme would be complete without beloved carols.
