Our season finale is an event you definitely don’t want to miss, as we proudly present two contemporary American classics: Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral and Nathaniel Stookey’s The Composer Is Dead. Blue Cathedral is one of Jennifer Higdon’s early and most celebrated works for orchestra, and was composed in 1989. The piece has since become a favorite in the American contemporary classical repertoire, appreciated for its evocative, meditative character and lyrical exploration of sound and emotion. Over the years, its expressive narrative has resonated with audiences and performers, contributing significantly to Higdon's reputation as a leading modern composer.

Enjoy the timeless music and story of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf as you meet the different instruments of the orchestra, narrated by the dynamic performing artist, Omari Tau.  Be dazzled by our Young Artists Competition winner playing the tour de force: Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30: I. Allegro ma non tanto.

Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale, written and performed during the 1918 flu epidemic, is a satirical examination of the pursuit of happiness. We pair this iconic tale with a new work for the same jazz-inspired forces, in which Arna Bontemps’ novel Black Thunder clashes with contemporary social crises. Omari Tau brings his theatrical brilliance to both works.
