"The Acts of Brízida Vaz" is a lively and humorous chamber opera inspired by "Auto da Barca do Inferno," a 16th-century play by Gil Vicente, the renowned Portuguese poet and playwright. This production vividly brings Portuguese culture to the forefront, exploring the theme of the afterlife with a a humorous and lively approach. The opera skilfully combines dark humour with light-hearted theatrics, crafting a multifaceted narrative that is both thought-provoking and entertaining. It seamlessly merges a variety of musical genres, including classical opera, Gregorian chant, and musical theatre, to enrich its storytelling. While rooted in Portuguese tradition, the themes of this opera are universal and resonate with audiences from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

The Cockpit

The ballet company’s second major premiere of the 2025/2026 season will not be a single full-length production, but rather an evening composed of several works by different choreographers. The ensemble will present pieces in modern and neoclassical dance styles, showcasing the distinctive authenticity of each choreographer’s movement language—yet connected by the shared theme of the inner world, Czech roots, and the Czech spirit.

And yet it was a life that I found too restrictive to continue. A life I eventually had to leave behind. This is a story I've wanted to tell for a long time. My name is Mineko..." For more than four decades, Mineko Iwasaki lived within the confines of powerful but invisible restrictions. Bound by an ancient, unwritten code – "the shroud of tradition and the sanctity of this exclusive profession" – she and thousands of other women throughout three centuries of Japanese history protected their extraordinary lives from the public eye. Mineko's compelling and moving story captures her earliest memories, beginning with her move to a geisha house at just four years of age and her initiation into the profession she wanted to improve. As we follow Mineko's gradual blossoming over the years from little "princess" to "the brightest of stars," we learn more about the complex training and the entire educational system that makes girls become geishas.

This powerful drama of classical ballet—one of the masterpieces of choreographer Marius Petipa, first premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1877—continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Its story of the temple dancer, the bayadère Nikiya, set in ancient India, reflects the 19th-century fascination with distant lands and oriental motifs in dance as well as in other arts.
