Robert is celebrating his 35th birthday and his friends keep asking him: “Why are you still unmarried? Haven’t you found the right one? Isn’t it time for you to settle down and start a family?” Robert himself tries to find the answers to such questions while he visits and has dinner or a drink with his married friends, observing their married life and listening to them telling him about the pros and cons of marriage. He contemplates his own life and future during many amusing situations. Will he eventually succumb to his friends’ pressure or will he retain his freedom?

The only woman who can stop the dark hero on his path of vengeance marries his rival. The obsession that transcends the temporary limits of human existence and the birth of evil are the driving dramatic forces behind the characters. Their story has rightly inspired both filmmakers and the world's theatres.

The ensemble will present pieces in modern and neoclassical dance styles, showcasing the distinctive authenticity of each choreographer’s movement language—yet connected by the shared theme of the inner world, Czech roots, and the Czech spirit.

What awaits Hansel and Gretel after they get lost in the forest? The German composer Engelbert Humperdinck transformed the classic Grimm brothers’ fairy tale into an opera with a libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette. Humperdinck’s music is marked by a masterful portrayal of scenes and settings, overflowing with beautiful melodies. Under his pen, fairy-tale characters come to life: woodland fairies, the wicked witch, and children made of gingerbread. Since its premiere in 1893, this opera has enchanted generations of audiences and rightfully belongs among the ten most popular works of the world repertoire. After a long 36 years, it now returns to Plzeň. Don’t worry—everything turns out well in the end!

Last time, director Radovan Lipus staged the story of painter Gottfried Lindauer. Now, we turn to a figure who left an indelible artistic mark not only in Plzeň—but one that is still alive today! For the puppets Spejbl and Hurvínek continue to entertain audiences to this very day.

And yet it was a life that I found too restrictive to continue. A life I eventually had to leave behind. This is a story I've wanted to tell for a long time. My name is Mineko..." For more than four decades, Mineko Iwasaki lived within the confines of powerful but invisible restrictions. Bound by an ancient, unwritten code – "the shroud of tradition and the sanctity of this exclusive profession" – she and thousands of other women throughout three centuries of Japanese history protected their extraordinary lives from the public eye. Mineko's compelling and moving story captures her earliest memories, beginning with her move to a geisha house at just four years of age and her initiation into the profession she wanted to improve. As we follow Mineko's gradual blossoming over the years from little "princess" to "the brightest of stars," we learn more about the complex training and the entire educational system that makes girls become geishas.

GEIKO

The author of this conversation play is one of the greatest talents of the contemporary French drama. The world premiere in 2011 in the Parisian Théâtre Montparnasse has launched its highly successful international tour. Czech theatregoers could have already seen it in various theatres across the country, this year for the first time in Pilsen. Michel, the main character of Zeller’s comedy, enters the play as a man who has no other choice but to lie. How else could he handle a situation where for six months he has been cheating on his wife with the wife of his best friend? Lying to all sides is something he considers not just an obligation, but mainly a way of showing consideration. Why hurt people we really care about? Michel believes that he is always one step ahead and that he knows more than the others do. But he is not prepared to the eventuality that the situation could turn around and that the events around his cheating could take an unexpected turn.

As an example, we can mention Hana Glawari's song about the Vilja fairy or the Danila song about his debauchery at the Maxim’s nightclub. The Merry Widow also belongs to those few operettas, whose libretto can attract audiences even in the 21st century. The story, set in Paris in 1905, is immensely theatrical and offers an important storyline and witty dialogues. The Merry Widow premiered on 30 December 1905 at the Na Vídeňce Theatre in Vienna. In Pilsen it was first shown in 1907 and it has never disappeared from the repertory for a long time. This time, the production is presented to the audience in a co-production with the Prague’s Karlín Theatre.

How Dog and Cat Baked a Cake, How Dog Tore His Trousers, and many other funny adventures of the two friends are well known to both the youngest and the grown-up audiences. Josef Čapek’s book, first published in 1929 with the author’s own illustrations, has delighted generations of readers with its warm language and deep understanding of a child’s world. This charming stage adaptation, sure to bring a smile even to parents’ faces, now returns to the Small Stage.

Stories About a Dog and a Cat

One evening, near a sleepy American town somewhere in Colorado, gunshots ring out—and soon after, Grace appears. She is on the run. She needs shelter from gangsters pursuing her and threatening her life. She is fortunate: the residents of Dogville, led by writer Tom, grant her refuge, and in return she helps them with their daily tasks. She babysits Vera and Chuck’s children, assists Mrs. Ginger in her store, polishes glass for the Hensen family, and keeps blind Mr. McKay company. She is welcomed into the community, and for Grace, the hope of a new beginning seems to dawn. After all, human beings are essentially good. Or… are they?

An original musical written specifically for the DJKT Small Stage, To Embrace the Waves is inspired by the final days of Romantic playwright, poet, and writer Heinrich von Kleist. In the autumn of 1811, Heinrich and his close friend Henriette—who had just left her husband—retreated to Lake Wannsee near Berlin. But Heinrich’s soul is as restless as the waves on the lake’s surface, and no less changeable are the many faces of love.

When nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier becomes an unwilling witness to a murder, the police hide her in the most unlikely of places—a convent! But bored and restless, Deloris has no intention of fitting in with the quiet life of the sisters under their rather strict Mother Superior. With her irrepressible spirit, she overturns convent routines and brings new life to the choir, transforming it into a popular musical sensation—though in doing so, she also draws the unwanted attention of the gangsters.

This powerful drama of classical ballet—one of the masterpieces of choreographer Marius Petipa, first premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1877—continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Its story of the temple dancer, the bayadère Nikiya, set in ancient India, reflects the 19th-century fascination with distant lands and oriental motifs in dance as well as in other arts.

American playwright Margaret Edson wrote an empathetic modern drama about confronting serious illness—a deeply human play that, despite its grave subject matter, contains intelligent humor. Wit invites reflection on existence itself, on both the strength and fragility of human life.

The powerful story of The Dogheads, one of Alois Jirásek’s most celebrated works, seems destined for the operatic stage. In 1897, the experienced composer and conductor Karel Kovařovic took on the challenge and created an opera that triumphed in the competition for a new Czech opera, surpassing Fibich and Foerster. Soon after, The Dogheads spread to opera houses across the Czech lands and won the hearts of a wide audience.

Verdi said that for his new opera he was looking for a subject depicting "people of special characters as bearers of courageous and varied deeds." He found it in García Gutiérrez's successful drama set in 15th-century Spain. Verdi set this chivalric drama full of twists and turns and compelling denouements to music with typical romantic emotion, and it definitely does not lack magnificent melodies.

The Troubadour

It sounds like a joke but the grannies don’t find it funny. They have a problem on their hands – serious bodily harm. They have attacked the minister for social affairs who had introduced a new scheme for seniors. And now they are desperate. Will they be freed, with the help of young dr. Klupps, or will they really go behind the bars?

Crutches and knives

The romantic and mysterious story of the enigmatic Transylvanian Count Dracula is set in several centuries from the Middle Ages to the near future. During those centuries, the ruthless ruler and cruel warrior, afflicted with the curse of immortality and eternal desire for blood, becomes a broken man, longing for love and redemption. This new, original and first ever production outside Prague is presented with a cast full of Pilsen musical stars. The staging of the legendary musical, first performed in June 2024 as a summer open-air production at the Lochotín Amphitheatre, is also one of J. K. Tyl Theatre's contributions to the Year of Czech Music.

Dracula

A timeless French comedy full of intrigues, infidelity, old debts, droit du seigneur and piquant accusation of those in power. The celebrity and ruler of the region, Count Almaviva, unwittingly battles the wits of his subordinate yet greatest rival, the servant Figaro. When the Count wants to taste the sweet embrace of Susanna, Figaro's chosen one, a tough fight begins.

The Marriage Of Figaro, Or A Crazy Day

For the youngest spectators, these have been mainly fairy tales presented recently at the Black Box, such as The Little Mermaid, Snow White, or for older children, Wild Flowers, which also opens up their future way to the theatre for children. A new ballet ensemble has come up with a fairy tale about The Princess With The Golden Star, whose film version by director Martin Frič from 1959 is a fixed part of the children's TV programmes. Božena Němcová's dancing fairy tale offers to the child's soul a clear view of the difference between good and evil.

The extraordinary musical about the desire to stop time returns to the Small Stage! Winner of the first edition of the competition for original Czech musicals Intro ’21, it offers a mysterious story full of imagination and outstanding musical numbers.

Each of Henry's wives tells her own story, including all sorts of juicy details, to prove to each other who suffered the most because of their common husband and his somewhat dubious moral principles. In a rousing eighty-minute concert battle, you'll be able to see six brilliant performers and a four-piece all-female band and listen to catchy tunes that have thrilled fans around the world, where the musical Six has garnered dozens of different awards. This modern, energetic and provocative work breaks down genre boundaries and will undoubtedly appeal especially to audiences of the young and middle generation. A colourful and exuberant party combining a musical, a pop concert and historical facts is simply not to be missed! And there will only be a limited number of performances!

The authors of Pharaoh's Curse attempt to answer these questions and more in the form of a chamber opera parody written for Pilsen. Its humour and poetics are not far from the style of the Monty Python satire or Mel Brooks' musicals. There will also be an aria in the spirit of Verdi, a frantic chase or the charming of snakes.
