Axel Kober was orchestra director in Duisburg for almost eight years , where he developed the Philharmonic Orchestra into one of the most exciting and modern orchestras in Germany and anchored it even more firmly in Duisburg's urban society - with new concert formats and cleverly curated programs with many renowned soloists. But now it's time to say goodbye; the last Philharmonic concert of the season is also the last that Axel Kober will conduct in his role as General Music Director. It will be a farewell with drums and trumpets in the truest sense of the word, because the program includes Schönberg's monumental "Gurre-Lieder". The oratorio for five vocal soloists, speaker, choir and orchestra is one of the largest and most impressive works in music history - and not just in the overwhelming sunrise with its mighty choral performance. In addition to a select ensemble of soloists with illustrious names such as Albert Dohmen, Maximillian Schmitt and Jacquelyn Wagner, the concert also offers the opportunity to meet the State Choir of Latvija again , which was already a guest in Duisburg last season. But for Axel Kober, too, the final bang with the "Gurre-Lieder" will not be a farewell forever, as he will remain closely associated with the orchestra as a guest conductor. So there are great prospects for the end of the season.

Luciano Berio, one of the most prominent Italian composers of the twentieth century, had a very special relationship with tradition and created numerous arrangements, orchestrations and transcriptions of very different composers - from Monteverdi to Mahler and the Beatles. While he was more cautious in other arrangements, in the work that he completed in 1989 under the title "Rendering", his ability as an arranger merges almost completely with his original compositional talent. The work is based on Schubert's fragments of Symphony No. 10 in D major, D 936A, of which those of the Andante in B minor, in Berio's and others' opinion, already anticipate Mahler's music. "This restoration follows the principles of a modern restoration of frescoes, which seeks to revive the old colours without, however, covering up the damage caused by time, often leaving irreversible empty spots in the composition," emphasizes Luciano Berio.

When the Tristan Project was first performed in 2004, The New York Times hailed it as “a multimedia conception that promised to be so ingenious that listeners traveled long distances to catch it and talked about it for months.” Matching Wagner’s 19th-century desire to expand what opera could be with 21st-century innovation, Viola’s and Sellars’ staging explores the psychological, spiritual, and elemental subtext of the story.
