Pianist

Led by music director and violinist Daniel Hope, the conductorless Bay Area–based ensemble continues its distinguished legacy. In addition to performing classical pieces, the orchestra has a robust platform for commissioning new works from living composers. Continuing an ongoing partnership with Stanford Live, Daniel Hope—joined by Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov—will lead the orchestra at Bing in music from Vertigo Suite by Bernard Herrmann, film score compositions by Ennio Morricone, Philip Glass’ Piano Concerto No. 3. and George Gershwin’s An American In Paris.

From the ominous fog horns of the San Francisco Bay in Hitchcock’s Vertigo to the chaotic city streets of Gershwin’s An American in Paris, New Century puts you at the heart of the drama with a selection of music from iconic films. Chinese composer Tan Dun, Oscar winner for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, weaves athletic percussion and graceful melodies into his Double Concerto, featuring Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov and Daniel Hope. A celebration of the American West completes the program with a special arrangement of music by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

Classics Reloaded is a concert experience that reimagines three centuries of keyboard music through the encounter of two instruments and two traditions. Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov — People’s Artist of Ukraine, Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, and the only pianist alive to have performed Bach’s Goldberg Variations over 300 times on stage — joins Burhan Öçal, the Turkish-Swiss master of the darbuka whose collaborations with Sting, Joe Zawinul, Fazıl Say and the Kronos Quartet have made him one of the most celebrated percussionists of our time.
