Southbank Sinfonia

London, United Kingdom

== Southbank Sinfonia == '''Southbank Sinfonia''' is an innovative and dynamic chamber orchestra based in London, United Kingdom. Founded in 2002 by Music Director Simon Over, the orchestra has established itself as a prominent springboard for graduate musicians embarking on professional careers. Each year, Southbank Sinfonia invites 33 of the world's most promising graduate musicians to participate in its prestigious fellowship program, which is designed to provide a critical transition from academic studies to the professional world. === History === Southbank Sinfonia was conceived with the goal of nurturing young talent and providing a platform for emerging artists to develop their skills and gain valuable experience. Under the leadership of Simon Over, the orchestra has grown to become a community where young musicians can explore their creative strengths, achieve personal goals, make lasting connections, and push the boundaries of their musicianship. Alumni of the fellowship program have gone on to occupy prominent positions in leading orchestras across the globe, from the Philharmonia Orchestra to the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and many continue to engage with Southbank Sinfonia as paid deputies, coaches, or collaborators in various projects. === Performances and Collaborations === Southbank Sinfonia is known for its versatility, performing a wide range of music from epic symphonies and chamber works to opera, jazz, baroque, and contemporary pieces. The orchestra has gained recognition for its Rush Hour Concert Series, its acclaimed production of "Amadeus" at the National Theatre, and collaborations with diverse organizations such as Nonclassical, iTunes, Sadler’s Wells, and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). In 2017, the orchestra's innovative approach to music-making earned it a nomination for the Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble Award. === Merger and New Chapter === In April 2021, Southbank Sinfonia entered a new chapter by merging with St John’s Smith Square, thereby forming a single entity with a shared administrative staff. This merger aimed to integrate both organizations successfully, develop a shared vision, and create a new brand that preserves their unique identities. Southbank Sinfonia at St John’s Smith Square continues to offer a diverse program of performances and aims to embed the Southbank Sinfonia Fellowship at the core of its programming. Themed weeks of activity explore various musical genres and include collaborations with external performers and ensembles, educational projects, and cultural partnerships. === Commitment to Young Musicians === As a registered charity, Southbank Sinfonia has generated over £5 million, which has directly supported young musicians through bursaries and professional fees. The organization's commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists is unparalleled, providing them with financial support and opportunities that are rare in the classical music industry. === Vision for the Future === Southbank Sinfonia at St John’s Smith Square is dedicated to fostering creativity and nurturing young talent. The organization is actively working to build a comprehensive Learning and Participation program and is committed to principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion. The orchestra invites audiences to join them on new cultural journeys, aiming to inspire through a blend of educational experiences and captivating performances.
