All the poise, elegance and grace of the Classical period is in this concert – on the surface. But each piece shows its composer in an inventive mood, pushing the boundaries of what was expected and creating something new. Prokofiev imagined how Mozart or Haydn might write in the 1920s and produced his charming First Symphony. Mozart used his Fifth Violin Concerto to play with tempo and style, creating his most brilliant, lyrical and witty writing for the instrument. And Beethoven’s First Symphony contains all the clues required to understand that this was no ordinary composer – he would take the symphony to somewhere entirely new.

Hailed as "a band of world-class soloists...in which egos dissolve and players think, breathe and play as one" (Time Out New York), the Israeli Chamber Project is a dynamic ensemble comprising strings, winds, harp, and piano. Its performances have taken it from The Kennedy and Lincoln Centers to Tokyo's Suntory Hall and Wigmore Hall in London in programs that draw on repertoire from the Eighteenth Century to present day, including specially commissioned arrangements and original works.

Their innovative return to CMDetroit includes a unique chamber transcription of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony made especially for them.

After its pious opening, Mendelssohn’s ‘Reformation’ Symphony explodes into a declaration of faith and equality – an image of the Lutheran Reformation as one of fortitude, industry, democratisation and joy, all of which permeate the composer’s best-kept symphonic secret. Before the embracing energy of Mendelssohn’s symphony comes the composer’s supremely elegant Violin Concerto in the sensitive hands of Antje Weithaas and music by Mendelssohn’s beloved Bach: the standout Orchestral Suite No. 2, with its modish flute solos.
