At times pleading, at times hectically overexcited, the music culminates in an overwhelming finale. Franz Liszt's First Piano Concerto is similarly captivating. It is a welcome challenge for the up-and-coming Israeli pianist Yoav Levanon, making his debut with the WDR Symphony Orchestra. The conductor is the Greek Constantinos Carydis. He opens the evening with a work by his fellow countryman Periklis Koukos: a sonorous prologue to Homer's "Odyssey."

After the summer break, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra returns to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with a dynamic programme. Austrian conductor Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, previously admired as a talented violinist, takes the stage alongside the extraordinary pianist Yoav Levanon. Together, they present Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto, a masterpiece filled with passion, playful contrasts, and echoes of Norwegian folk traditions. Its dramatic opening bars, introduced by timpani rolls, set the tone for an emotional journey inspired by Grieg’s personal joys and sorrows. The concert concludes with Brahms’ majestic Fourth Symphony, a profound work reflecting his lifelong fascination with classical forms and styles. In its final movement, Brahms masterfully incorporates a passacaglia and an excerpt from a Bach cantata.

Commencing piano studies at the age of three, the young Israeli pianist was performing at Carnegie Hall at the age of six and gave a successful performance of Chopin’s First Concerto at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, at the age of 11. His first solo CD included performances of Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann and the Liszt Sonata, in which, according to Fanfare, he raced ahead ‘with completely clear, unblurred passagework, a commanding tone, and remarkable presence. If his aim is to rock the hall, he eminently succeeds’.
