When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in 1791, at the age of just 35, he left his Requiem unfinished. The myth of the death mass's indirect contribution to the composer's death has become a core narrative, which Milos Forman made world-famous with his film Amadeus. And even if the myth is untrue, Mozart's Requiem is and remains one of history's strongest symbols of the fragility of life and the ability of music to reach beyond death. Mozart's melodic tone is emotionally bottomless: from doomsday terror to comfort, reconciliation and hope. Requiem is not just a funeral mass for the dead. It is life-giving music.

Christmas is a busy time for everyone – including a composer like Johann Sebastian Bach in the 1730s. Not only is he responsible for all the music in Leipzig's churches and for teaching the students at the associated school – he also has to write new music for the many holidays. And in the midst of a daily routine that would have caused most people stress in a single week, Bach writes some of the greatest masterpieces of Western civilization.
