The String Quartet in A major, Op. 2, is the work of 16-year-old Richard Strauss, who had studied his masters. Strauss' father was extremely careful to ensure that his highly gifted son only came into contact with works by composers he approved of. And so the early string quartet stands firmly in the tradition of the Viennese classics. Things were less serious in the "Harbni" social club, to which all Strauss family members belonged. "Harbni" means something like "never angry", which inspired Strauss to compose a humorous set of variations on the song "Das Dirndl is harb auf mi". Folk music researchers pricked up their ears and determined that the alleged folk song was probably written by Strauss himself. The early Strauss works are contrasted by two world premieres by Dijana Bošković. In both commissioned works, the Yugoslavian-born composer draws on the rich tradition of Balkan folk music and transforms it into new sound worlds.
