Thus, Camille Saint-Saëns bowed in 1855 before the latest coup of his colleague Charles Gounod. With the Mass of St. Cecilia, Gounod paid homage to the patron saint of sacred music.

Even musicians later considered geniuses had to apply officially for a position. This was the case for Johann Sebastian Bach, who in 1723 received confirmation of his long-awaited position as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. The following 27 years of his artistic career were henceforth characterized by service to the church, in particular the composition of cantatas for Sunday services. Around 200 of these multi-movement works for vocals and instrumental accompaniment by Bach have survived. These works—embedded in Christian doctrine—tell of central human experiences. The personal path from suffering to heavenly redemption—or, in universal terms, that life is not just a leisurely stroll—is the subject of the two cantatas presented by the Gaechinger Cantorey in Ludwigsburg's Schlosskirche. As an internationally renowned period ensemble, the ensemble impressively demonstrates the high artistry with which Bach traces the human journey to the "place of longing, heaven" in a timeless and still moving musical language.

It is probably the best-known composition of Baroque music: the famous "Air" by Johann Sebastian Bach. As a slow movement, it is part of the Orchestral Suite No. 3, which Bach, like Suite No. 4, probably composed for the court music in Köthen. Bach evidently valued these compilations of festive overtures and dance movements so much that he traveled several times with copies of the suites in his luggage. Bach's only setting of the Latin Magnificat text originally dates from his first year as Thomaskantor. With this magnificent composition, Bach wanted to demonstrate his skills and impress the Leipzig audience - which he probably succeeded in doing. Vivaldi supposedly composed faster than his copyists could copy. One of his many Concerti con molti strumenti is the masterfully composed G minor Concerto RV 576. Julian Shevlin and Andrey Godik, two members of the Munich Philharmonic, take on the solo parts. This baroque program is directed by Andrea Marcon, a proven specialist in historical performance practice.

Hans-Christoph Rademann is an internationally respected Bach expert, in addition to being the founder of the world-renowned Dresdner Kammerchor. Together with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and some of the world’s leading soloists, he performs an extremely moving interpretation of this musical masterpiece. Joseph Haydn’s »Creation« can be described as the most important oratorio of the Classical period. Together with George Frideric Handel’s oratorios, it had an impact right up to the High Romantic period. The three-part work sets the biblical account of the creation of the world to music in a tremendous wealth of colour, depicting a paradisiacal world with an impressive abundance of life. The choir responds to the narrative with songs of praise, of which »Die Himmel erzählen« has become one of the most popular vocal works.
