Lotte has been abandoned by the love of her life, Michael, and, to make matters worse, has also been dismissed from her job as a social worker. Then, out of the blue, Michael’s grown-up son, Daniel, calls—he has been unable to reach his father. Together, they discover Michael dead in his flat.

As Lotte and Daniel attempt to unravel the mystery of Michael’s sudden death, she is unwillingly drawn into her neighbour’s turbulent marital crisis, disrupted by her job consultant’s relentless demands for CV-writing courses, and confronted by former colleagues who—full of sympathy—lament her unfair dismissal. On top of it all, she finds herself looking after her neighbour’s children while the neighbour resolves her marriage troubles in Lotte’s own bed.
