Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

For centuries, even the most gifted composers have found themselves persecuted or marginalised simply because of who they were. As a gay man in Tsarist Russia, Tchaikovsky knew what it was to be an outsider, and he poured all his emotions into his Fourth Symphony: a no-holds-barred emotional autobiography, pulsing with melody and torn by raw and dangerous passions. ‘Petrenko’s Fourth is a white-knuckle ride’ wrote Gramophone magazine, and he certainly won’t hold back tonight. There’s no shortage of great melodies in the first half of the concert, too, as Petrenko champions Dorothy Howell’s Lamia – a wildly romantic tale of forbidden love – and the lovely piano concerto by the African-American composer Florence Price. Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, making her Royal Philharmonic Orchestra debut, is the soloist in music that was side-lined for decades and is only now receiving its due.

Our festival opening concert features three pieces inspired by and portraying America from three different centuries. Florence Price’s 1939 Concert Overture No. 1 reworks a spiritual “Sinner, Please Don’t Let This Harvest Pass” where ever changing orchestral colors interpret many deeply emotional moments. Virtuoso composer Xavier Foley will then play his own Soul Bass concerto, recently finished in 2022, an all-American exposition, paying tribute to the diverse styles that weave into the colorful musical tapestry of today.

Your Colorado Symphony’s own Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Principal Cello Seoyoen Min grace the stage with the mesmerizing interplay of the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello. Inside of eight short years, American composers produced three masterpieces – all of them in completely different styles and written with distinctive voices.  This concert celebrates this great American explosion by combining all three of them into one special evening of music.

 Our centerpiece is Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue”, played by one of the great pianists of our generation, Stewart Goodyear.  (Fun fact: the famous clarinet glissando at the beginning wasn’t written by Gershwin – it was a prank his clarinetist played on him at the first rehearsal, and it stuck!)

 Arkansan William Grant Still – also known to many as the “Dean of African-American Composers” – wrote his tremendously emotional and satisfying Symphony no. 1 in 1930, infused with both the blues and traditional spirituals, and it was the first symphony by a Black American to be performed by an established orchestra, in 1931.  Two years later, and finishing out our program, Arkansas native Florence Price became the second composer to achieve that status when her gloriously infectious Symphony no. 1 was performed by the Chicago Symphony in 1933.

American Voices: Rhapsody in Blue

Inside of eight short years, American composers produced three masterpieces – all of them in completely different styles and written with distinctive voices.  This concert celebrates this great American explosion by combining all three of them into one special evening of music.

Experience the soul-stirring power of Carlos Simon’s Gospel Mass in a world premiere event at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, under the baton of the illustrious Gustavo Dudamel. Scheduled for two unforgettable evenings on April 17 and 18, 2025, at 8:00 PM, this performance promises to be a profound celebration of Black joy, spiritual discovery, and the resilience of faith.

The evening begins with Leonard Bernstein’s Divertimento, a heartfelt tribute to the city of his youth and its symphony orchestra, setting the stage for a night of emotional depth and musical brilliance. Following this, violinist Randall Goosby, known for his lush tone and exceptional technique, will perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a piece that showcases his unique artistry and connection to the music.

The highlight of the night, Carlos Simon’s Gospel Mass, marks its world premiere as an LA Phil commission. This piece is a celebratory homage, inspired by Bernstein’s MASS and Simon’s personal experiences, creating a narrative that explores themes of loss, gratitude, hope, and resilience. Featuring The Sunday Service Collective with Jason White as choir master and a visual narrative by Melina Matsoukas, known for her award-winning work with Beyoncé and Rihanna, this performance is set to be an immersive experience.

In a completely new manner from before, Beethoven infused his second symphony with surprising effects. The orchestra swiftly switches between the faintest of whispers to thunderous outbursts in sudden turns. Here, wild humor and dramatic mood abound. Portuguese conductor Dinis Sousa leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in this symphonic milestone.

A program of wonderful musical masterpieces by extraordinarily gifted American composers. The NMSO performs an exquisite lament by Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker, two works by Florence Price — the first black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra: her passionate and powerful Symphony No. 1, with its musical reflections of Dvorak’s great New World Symphony, and also Price’s dynamic Piano Concerto. The NMSO welcomes the University of Memphis Artist-in-Residence Artina McCain, who also performs a delightful Dance Tribute by Ghanaian-American composer Fred Onovwerosuoke.
