This concert conducted by Leslie Suganandarajah demonstrates that the USA has much to offer despite current turmoil. The Sri Lankan-born conductor has been Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater since 2019, where he brings together a broad spectrum of American music.
He begins with Anna Clyne, this season's Composer in Focus of the GSO, followed by the even more recent Trumpet Concerto by the already legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, featuring Selina Ott, born in Austria in 1998, as soloist. And after the interval, a rarity: Florence Price, who made a name for herself at the beginning of the 20th century, was one of the first female composers in the USA.

Invoke was the Young Professional String Quartet in Residence at the University of Texas at Austin from 2016-2018. Since being selected as Interlochen’s Emerging Artists Quartet in 2014, the group has been a featured artist and on faculty at the Interlochen Adult Chamber Music Camp. The group also participated in the Emerging String Quartet Program at Stanford, and was an Artist in Residence at Strathmore and the Fellowship String Quartet at Wintergreen Performing Arts. In 2018, Invoke was named a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York, NY, received First Prize at the M-Prize International Chamber Arts competition in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and received First Prize in the Coltman Competition in Austin, Texas.

Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

In the pursuit of artistry, pianist Michelle Cann brings her breathtaking virtuosity to the irrepressible jazz rhythms of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which garnered immediate acclaim for breaking the boundaries between classical and jazz. Even more than 100 years later, it has still not lost its luster. For centuries, even the most gifted composers have found themselves persecuted or marginalised simply because of who they were. As a gay man in Tsarist Russia, Tchaikovsky knew what it was to be an outsider, and he poured all his emotions into his Fourth Symphony: a no-holds-barred emotional autobiography, pulsing with melody and torn by raw and dangerous passions. ‘Petrenko’s Fourth is a white-knuckle ride’ wrote Gramophone magazine, and he certainly won’t hold back tonight. There’s no shortage of great melodies in the first half of the concert, too, as Petrenko champions Dorothy Howell’s Lamia – a wildly romantic tale of forbidden love – and the lovely piano concerto by the African-American composer Florence Price. Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, making her Royal Philharmonic Orchestra debut, is the soloist in music that was side-lined for decades and is only now receiving its due.

Our festival opening concert features three pieces inspired by and portraying America from three different centuries. Florence Price’s 1939 Concert Overture No. 1 reworks a spiritual “Sinner, Please Don’t Let This Harvest Pass” where ever changing orchestral colors interpret many deeply emotional moments. Virtuoso composer Xavier Foley will then play his own Soul Bass concerto, recently finished in 2022, an all-American exposition, paying tribute to the diverse styles that weave into the colorful musical tapestry of today.

Your Colorado Symphony’s own Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Principal Cello Seoyoen Min grace the stage with the mesmerizing interplay of the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello. On the first half, the program opens with a spiritual work by Florence Price featuring principal clarinetist Chris Johnson. Young virtuoso Lun Li will then bring Joseph Bologne’s remarkable and “Mozartean” Ninth Violin Concerto to life. A true renaissance man of the 18th century, Bologne was an extraordinary black composer neglected for centuries who is finally getting rightful recognition as one of the most accomplished musicians of his time.
