For this program led by Michael Francis, courage wears many faces. In Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a quick-thinking heroine stays alive night after night by spinning stories of the Arabian Nights, and you can hear her voice in the violin — pulling you into the adventures of Sinbad the Sailor, Aladdin and more. One of today’s most exciting young pianists, Jeneba Kanneh-Mason makes her TFO debut in Piano Concerto in One Movement, a work shaped by the fearless spirit of its trailblazing composer, Florence Price. Opening the evening, Karen LeFrak’s American Promise sets a tone of reflection and hope. Jeneba Kanneh-Mason building a distinctive artistic voice of her own while inspiring a new generation.

Each performance of the award-winning Borromeo String Quartet strengthens its reputation as one of the most important ensembles of our time. The Festival Strings Lucerne and Daniel Dodds are tying together a delightful garland of the loveliest melodies and dances from the New World in keeping with this summer’s theme, “American Dreams.” Though the program begins with a Czech composer — Antonín Dvořák, with the vibrant and feather-light Scherzo from his Serenade for Strings — it fits perfectly, since Dvořák was the “midwife” who helped American music discover its own identity. The African American composer Florence Price carries his musical language forward: her touching Andante cantabile goes straight to the heart. Also on board is the “Bad Boy of Music,” George Antheil, with a cheeky Allegro from his First Serenade. John Corigliano sends us traveling toward a better world filled with pleasure and brightness in his sonorous Voyage, inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s famous poem L’Invitation au voyage. George Gershwin enchants with a gentle lullaby, and Leonard Bernstein invites us to waltz. And how to top all that? With the Hoe-Down from Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo, of course — a square dance in classic country style.

Praised for “…sparkling, taut performances” (New York Times), the Harlem Chamber Players are a collective of professional classical musicians dedicated to bringing high-caliber, affordable, accessible live classical music to people in the Harlem community and beyond. In a program perfect for the weekend of our nation’s 250th anniversary, Dvořák’s evergreen “American” Quartet, with its echoing of American musical traditions, is performed here with two accessible yet overlooked quartet masterworks of American composers. Florence Price was a musical heroine of the Chicago Black Renaissance of the 1920s, while George Walker’s 1946 quartet has long been famous for its elegiac slow movement, often referred to as a counterpart to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The Harlem Chamber Players give us a rare opportunity to hear the entire work complete.

Some pieces define composers, their technique and their sound. The SLS closes it’s 50th Season with a performance of two composers who created works that set their legacy in place. Florence Price’s Mississippi Suite was almost unknown, however. This was one of many works discovered after the composer’s death, in an attic, almost discarded. Luckily for us, it was saved! The work is 20th Century Americana at its finest, describing the Mississippi River through the people that lived on its banks, from Native Americans to settlers, to the descendants of Black slaves. The journey takes us both through history and time, culminating with a moving setting of the spiritual, Deep River. One of classical music’s most enduring works, Elgar’s Enigma Variations is a look at friendship, love, and the human psyche, through the lens of the composer’s imagination. The great English composer gives us intimate portraits of his friends, relations, co-workers, and fellow musicians, culminating in a rousing self-portrait of the composer himself, with an added pipe organ, for added affect! Join us as we close out our 50th Year of concerts!
