Did you know Ravel and Gershwin were friends and mutual fans? That Gershwin sat in the audience at the premiere of Price’s first symphony? Experience four works created between 1929 and 1934 reflecting the composers’ mutual admiration, as well as the jazz era in which the music was born.

This concert is a vibrant exploration of orchestral repertoire, illuminating music's capacity to both mirror cultural identity and to serve as a source of inspiration.

 

For this performance, we are thrilled to welcome UD faculty member Christine Delbeau (https://www.music.udel.edu/who-we-are/delbeau) to the stage. Italy’s Il Messagero’s enthusiastic review described her playing as, “… particularly compelling to follow the development of the music as guided by this great American soloist, so in tune with the music she so intimately interprets.” Delbeau has performed as collaborative pianist and soloist in several of the world’s most prominent venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Weill-Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. Chineke! return to the festival in 2024. The concert begins with the sparkling Ballade, Op. 33, by the British composer Samuel Coleridge- Taylor, a work of late Romanticism that immediately catches the ear. It might be reminiscent of Tchaikovsky or Dvořák. The latter undoubtedly influenced the symphonic music of the African American composer Florence Price. In 2022, Yannick Nézet-Séguin introduced Price’s First Symphony to Lucerne, and now we can hear her Third. In between, things get jazzy with the Violin Concerto by the legendary trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis.

As was often done in late Romanticism, where there was not always access to large symphony orchestras, the new works which are premiered at this concert are intended as a downscaling of the Romantic violin concerto in a Nordic project with "Pocket Concertos" by Nordic composers. In addition, the program offers a classic by Debussy and a very charming piano quartet inspired by folk tunes and Negro spirituals in the 3rd movement by the American composer Florence Price.

Be the first to experience a brand new concerto by Gabriela Lena Frank, heralded as one of the most significant women composers in history by the Washington Post. Kachkaniraqmi (“I Still Exist”) was commissioned by the Festival and will be performed by Boulder’s Grammy-winning Takács Quartet as ensemble-soloist alongside the Orchestra. After intermission, Joan Tower’s brilliant Concerto for Orchestra allows for great moments of individual virtuosity, but ultimately it is the entire Orchestra that shines. “I had imagined a long and large landscape that had a feeling of space and distance,” Tower says of her Concerto for Orchestra, in which the music “travels a long road.” This program celebrates three generations of women composers and opens with Florence Price’s Adoration, originally conceived for solo organ and performed here in its stunning arrangement for strings.

Virtuoso violinist Sarah Chang returns to NatPhil for Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in a program conducted by Maestro Piotr Gajewski. Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a masterpiece of romantic music with soaring melodies and lush harmonies that make it one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. Paired with the concerto on the first half of the program is Cuban-born composer Tania León’s Ácana, inspired by Cuban Laureate Poet Nicolás Guillén’s poem dedicated to the towering ácana tree, an essential force in Cuban life and society. León received the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music and was named a recipient of the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements in 2022.

Come and join us for an unforgettable afternoon of music as the Boston Civic Symphony presents their 99th season finale. 
We begin with a  performance of Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 1 in G Major, Movement II - Andante Moderato, expertly arranged for string orchestra by the renowned Peter Stanley Martin.
Next, the audience will be treated to the vibrant and spellbinding Azul by Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov. Featuring the brilliant cello soloist Allison Eldridge, this piece will leave you in awe with its intricate blend of classical and Latin American influences.
And for the grand finale, the Boston Civic Symphony will bring the iconic Pines of Rome by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi to life. This beloved orchestral masterpiece takes listeners on a musical journey through the ancient streets of Rome, evoking the sounds and sights of this historic city.

American violinist Melissa White has enchanted audiences and critics around the world as both a soloist and a chamber musician. 

Her February 2020 performance with the National Philharmonic was deemed “absolutely breathtaking” by Maryland Theatre Guide critic Katie Gaab, who cited the “grace, precision, and warmth” of her playing in Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 1; reviewing the same concert for The Washington Post, Matthew Guerrieri called her “an excellent advocate, prioritizing ease and fluency over intensity, suiting the music’s lyric and episodic nature.”
