For this performance, we are thrilled to welcome UD faculty member Christine Delbeau (https://www.music.udel.edu/who-we-are/delbeau) to the stage. Italy’s Il Messagero’s enthusiastic review described her playing as, “… particularly compelling to follow the development of the music as guided by this great American soloist, so in tune with the music she so intimately interprets.” Delbeau has performed as collaborative pianist and soloist in several of the world’s most prominent venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Weill-Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. Internationally, she has performed at the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, and in concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.

A Memo from the Maestro: Come join us as we celebrate the centenary of the first performance of a true American classic, a piano concerto that changed the world:  George Gershwin's amazing RHAPSODY IN BLUE!  Michelle Cann will bring her brilliance and charm on a welcome return visit to La Crosse, in which she'll also perform the La Crosse premiere of the Piano Concerto of the unjustly-neglected composer Florence Price, a central figure in the Black Chicago Renaissance of the 1930s and 40s.  Composed within a decade of each other, these two one-movement masterpieces make a perfect American pair.  And to end the evening -- and back by popular demand -- our Maestro presents yet another beautiful Aaron Copland Symphony No. 3.  culminating in Copland's magnificent full-orchestra rendering of his immortal "Fanfare for the Common Man" -- an evening not to be missed!

Known for his powerful performances with the world's leading orchestras, Abduraimov brings his musical prowess to a more intimate setting in his Cal Performances debut. This recital promises to be a showcase of story and image, featuring an eclectic program that includes Prokofiev’s piano adaptation of music from his ballet "Romeo and Juliet" and the West Coast premiere of Uzbek composer Dilorom Saidaminova’s 1973 work "The Walls of Ancient Bukhara." Additionally, the program will highlight Florence Price’s "Fantasie nègre No. 1," a piece that incorporates Black American folk melodies and has gained popularity as interest in Price’s work has been revived.

Join us in Capitol Theater as we kick off the 24/25 Masterworks season with a fiery display of masterful musicianship. We open with a gem from the classical era by German composer and Mozart contemporary, Carl P. Stamitz with Symphony in C Major, Op. 13/16 No. 5. This work provides a beautiful prequel for the return of Canadian pianist, Janina Fialkowska, joining the orchestra to illuminate Beethoven’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 4 in G. The evening will close with Symphony No. 3 in G minor by mid-nineteenth century composer, Louise Farrenc. Serving as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire for over twenty years, her musical language is compelling, and steeped in the Romantic French tradition.

Acclaimed for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty, the Escher Quartet opens its PCMS program with Samuel Barber’s Quartet in B Minor, Op. 11, the middle movement of which Barber later arranged for string orchestra as the Adagio for Strings. Following Florence Price’s second quartet—a monumental work that vividly captures the depth of Price’s unique talents—the ensemble is joined by violist Jordan Bak, “a powerhouse musician, with a strong voice and compelling sound” (The Whole Note), for Dvořák’s American string quintet, composed shortly after the composer’s quartet of the same name.

Fleck’s reimagining of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue pays homage to the legendary composer while redefining an all-time classic. Chineke! return to the festival in 2024. The concert begins with the sparkling Ballade, Op. 33, by the British composer Samuel Coleridge- Taylor, a work of late Romanticism that immediately catches the ear. It might be reminiscent of Tchaikovsky or Dvořák. The latter undoubtedly influenced the symphonic music of the African American composer Florence Price. In 2022, Yannick Nézet-Séguin introduced Price’s First Symphony to Lucerne, and now we can hear her Third. In between, things get jazzy with the Violin Concerto by the legendary trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis.

As was often done in late Romanticism, where there was not always access to large symphony orchestras, the new works which are premiered at this concert are intended as a downscaling of the Romantic violin concerto in a Nordic project with "Pocket Concertos" by Nordic composers. In addition, the program offers a classic by Debussy and a very charming piano quartet inspired by folk tunes and Negro spirituals in the 3rd movement by the American composer Florence Price.

Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a masterpiece of romantic music with soaring melodies and lush harmonies that make it one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. Paired with the concerto on the first half of the program is Cuban-born composer Tania León’s Ácana, inspired by Cuban Laureate Poet Nicolás Guillén’s poem dedicated to the towering ácana tree, an essential force in Cuban life and society. León received the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music and was named a recipient of the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements in 2022.
