He is the recipient of the 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant and was featured as Musical America’s “New Artist of the Month” and “One to Watch” in Gramophone Magazine.

Inside of eight short years, American composers produced three masterpieces – all of them in completely different styles and written with distinctive voices.  This concert celebrates this great American explosion by combining all three of them into one special evening of music.

 Our centerpiece is Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue”, played by one of the great pianists of our generation, Stewart Goodyear.  (Fun fact: the famous clarinet glissando at the beginning wasn’t written by Gershwin – it was a prank his clarinetist played on him at the first rehearsal, and it stuck!)

 Arkansan William Grant Still – also known to many as the “Dean of African-American Composers” – wrote his tremendously emotional and satisfying Symphony no. 1 in 1930, infused with both the blues and traditional spirituals, and it was the first symphony by a Black American to be performed by an established orchestra, in 1931.  Two years later, and finishing out our program, Arkansas native Florence Price became the second composer to achieve that status when her gloriously infectious Symphony no. 1 was performed by the Chicago Symphony in 1933.

Experience the soul-stirring power of Carlos Simon’s Gospel Mass in a world premiere event at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, under the baton of the illustrious Gustavo Dudamel. Scheduled for two unforgettable evenings on April 17 and 18, 2025, at 8:00 PM, this performance promises to be a profound celebration of Black joy, spiritual discovery, and the resilience of faith.

The evening begins with Leonard Bernstein’s Divertimento, a heartfelt tribute to the city of his youth and its symphony orchestra, setting the stage for a night of emotional depth and musical brilliance. Following this, violinist Randall Goosby, known for his lush tone and exceptional technique, will perform Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a piece that showcases his unique artistry and connection to the music.

The highlight of the night, Carlos Simon’s Gospel Mass, marks its world premiere as an LA Phil commission. This piece is a celebratory homage, inspired by Bernstein’s MASS and Simon’s personal experiences, creating a narrative that explores themes of loss, gratitude, hope, and resilience. Featuring The Sunday Service Collective with Jason White as choir master and a visual narrative by Melina Matsoukas, known for her award-winning work with Beyoncé and Rihanna, this performance is set to be an immersive experience.

Maestro Kellen Gray’s program explores beautiful memories and outdoor delights. Dvořák’s My Home was originally written to accompany a patriotic theatrical production, and for it the composer draws from the song “Where is my Home?,” which today is the Czech national anthem. Similarly, American composer Florence Price’s 1934 piano concerto uses the hymns and spirituals of her youth as the source for her best-known concerto, performed by the internationally-acclaimed Stewart Goodyear, a Tallahassee favorite! Rounding out the program is Beethoven’s gleeful and spirited Fourth Symphony, written at the country estate of his patron Prince Lichnowsky as he enjoyed a daily tonic of outdoor delights—sunshine, warmth, fresh air, and the sounds of nature.

The NMSO performs an exquisite lament by Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker, two works by Florence Price — the first black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra: her passionate and powerful Symphony No. 1, with its musical reflections of Dvorak’s great New World Symphony, and also Price’s dynamic Piano Concerto. The NMSO welcomes the University of Memphis Artist-in-Residence Artina McCain, who also performs a delightful Dance Tribute by Ghanaian-American composer Fred Onovwerosuoke.

Little Rock? Hollywood! The first part of the evening takes us into the dazzling musical world of the dream factory. Master arranger Robert Russel Bennett titled his symphonically brilliant medley of immortal melodies by "the great George" Gershwin in Hollywood . This is followed by music by the living Hollywood legend Danny Elfman, composer of the soundtracks to The Simpsons, Batman, Spider-Man and countless others. After 2019, Vivi Vassileva, a German star percussionist with Bulgarian roots who electrifies audiences around the world, will be joining us as the soloist in his brand new percussion concert. Little Rock? Not only was Hilary Clinton born in the capital of the US state of Arkansas, but also a great woman in American music history sixty years earlier: Florence Price, the first African-American composer to make her voice heard. Her masterful fourth and final symphony from 1945 was not played for the first time until 2018. It is conducted by Gregor Mayrhofer, who has previously assisted Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic and worked with soloists such as Khatia Buniatishvili and Daniil Trifonov.

North and South American rhythms – in Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" they characterize the two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Bernstein arranged some numbers from the now famous musical as a suite, which conquered the concert stage as "symphonic dances."
Just like George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," in which jazz elements, blues and symphonic music merge together. The African-American composer Florence Price is considered a rediscovery, and her "Suite of Dance" will be heard. Darius Milhaud's dance-like cinema fantasy "The Ox on the Roof" and the rhythmic piece "Huapango" by the Mexican José Pablo Moncayo will also be heard.

This orchestral program celebrates the incredible variety of dance music composed and performed in the United States. Florence Price’s 1951 orchestral Suite of Dances reflects the composer’s African American heritage, and Russian émigré Sergei Rachmaninov’s 1941 Symphonic Dances echoes the homeland he fled in 1917. Contemporary American composer Libby Larson describes her 2016 “Dancing Man Rhapsody”—written for our soloist, violinist Terrie Baune—as a “cornucopia of music in motion.”

Renowned for their spirited and engaging interpretations, AGAVE has earned accolades and a GRAMMY nomination for their album with the velvet-voiced countertenor Reginald Mobley, titled "American Originals." This program is a celebration of music by predominantly Black and brown composers, featuring works by Cuban composer Esteban Salas, the extraordinary Black American composer Florence B. Price, and ragtime master Scott Joplin, among others. The performance promises a rich tapestry of sound, uniting voices to create a uniquely American musical experience. Highlights include Florence B. Price's evocative pieces such as "Resignation" and "Songs to the Dark Virgin," Esteban Salas's "Tu, mi Díos, entre pajas," and Scott Joplin's "Bethena, a concert waltz," arranged by Lebedinsky. Anthony McGill is principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic and a dynamic soloist known for his “trademark brilliance” (The New York Times), and the exceptionally thoughtful pianist Emanuel Ax has been one of the most beloved performers at Carnegie Hall for decades. Their eclectic program includes a recent work by James Lee III; stirring short pieces by Price and Jessie Montgomery; Bernstein’s Clarinet Sonata; Adolphus Hailstork’s The Blue Bag (composed personally for McGill and inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and more); and a melodious Schubert sonata of fascinating origin that shines on clarinet.

We can only imagine how much courage, self-confidence and steadfastness the African-American Julia Perry had to muster on her way to becoming a composer, at a time when the doors of classical music were not open to women or people of color. And yet she pursued her goal unswervingly, studying first with Luigi Dallapiccola and later with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Her career began in 1951 with the "Stabat Mater", but it was never given the attention it deserved. A fate that Florence Price had already suffered at the end of the 19th century. She was also a woman and an African-American - and, against all odds, managed to compose an impressive number of around 300 compositions. And a century earlier, Joseph Bologne also had to struggle with racism and discrimination, for he was born in Guadeloupe to a slave and a French nobleman and was later admired at the court of Paris as the "black Mozart". With Brandon Keith Brown, the conductor is vehemently committed to ensuring that people of color, both past and present, are finally given the attention they deserve. As part of the "New Ways" project "Music-Axis-Times", the concert aims to help finally establish this repertoire that has been suppressed for too long and to give people of color a visible place on the stage.

Dvořák was convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on folk themes. “These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil.” Alongside Dvořák’s iconic work, this concert features composers who explore and express their visions of “America.” Those of Still and Price demonstrate the promise of Dvořák’s prediction through their use of African-American popular musical styles and melodies. This concert is a vibrant exploration of orchestral repertoire, illuminating music's capacity to both mirror cultural identity and to serve as a source of inspiration.

 

For this performance, we are thrilled to welcome UD faculty member Christine Delbeau (https://www.music.udel.edu/who-we-are/delbeau) to the stage. Italy’s Il Messagero’s enthusiastic review described her playing as, “… particularly compelling to follow the development of the music as guided by this great American soloist, so in tune with the music she so intimately interprets.” Delbeau has performed as collaborative pianist and soloist in several of the world’s most prominent venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Weill-Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. Internationally, she has performed at the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, and in concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.

A Memo from the Maestro: Come join us as we celebrate the centenary of the first performance of a true American classic, a piano concerto that changed the world:  George Gershwin's amazing RHAPSODY IN BLUE!  Michelle Cann will bring her brilliance and charm on a welcome return visit to La Crosse, in which she'll also perform the La Crosse premiere of the Piano Concerto of the unjustly-neglected composer Florence Price, a central figure in the Black Chicago Renaissance of the 1930s and 40s. Known for his powerful performances with the world's leading orchestras, Abduraimov brings his musical prowess to a more intimate setting in his Cal Performances debut. This recital promises to be a showcase of story and image, featuring an eclectic program that includes Prokofiev’s piano adaptation of music from his ballet "Romeo and Juliet" and the West Coast premiere of Uzbek composer Dilorom Saidaminova’s 1973 work "The Walls of Ancient Bukhara." Additionally, the program will highlight Florence Price’s "Fantasie nègre No. 1," a piece that incorporates Black American folk melodies and has gained popularity as interest in Price’s work has been revived.

Join us in Capitol Theater as we kick off the 24/25 Masterworks season with a fiery display of masterful musicianship. We open with a gem from the classical era by German composer and Mozart contemporary, Carl P. Stamitz with Symphony in C Major, Op. 13/16 No. 5. This work provides a beautiful prequel for the return of Canadian pianist, Janina Fialkowska, joining the orchestra to illuminate Beethoven’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 4 in G. The evening will close with Symphony No. 3 in G minor by mid-nineteenth century composer, Louise Farrenc. Serving as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire for over twenty years, her musical language is compelling, and steeped in the Romantic French tradition.
