Ever since the 1970s, the artistry of pianist Kathryn Stott has won the hearts of audiences and colleagues alike. Now she’s decided to retire, and for this, her very last public concert, she comes home to the place where it all began: Liverpool. “I have enjoyed the most wonderful and fulfilling career,” she says. Tonight, Kathy plays the pieces she loves best of all, as she bids farewell to the concert stage and looks forward to a new chapter in a remarkable career.

Two leading song performers commemorate those buried in the Parisian cemetery of Montmartre – who include Heine, Berlioz, Lili Boulanger and Apollinaire – also sampling songs regularly heard in nearby cabarets.

This culminates with a performance of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, arguably one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. Bartók draws from a vast array of traditional musical inspirations, with orchestration that vividly captures diverse styles and colours. True to its title as a ‘concerto’ for orchestra rather than a ‘symphony,’ it offers a balanced distribution of melodies, presenting significant challenges for all.

Delyana then directs the massed forces of the Hallé, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, a rising RNCM star and the stunning mezzo-soprano, Hanna Hipp, in Lili Boulanger’s ominous setting of Psalm 130, widely believed to be a reaction to the outbreak of World War One. Sheffield treasure, Darius Battiwalla, pulls out all the stops in music by Saint-Saёns. His first published organ work, Fantaisie, has two contrasting movements: one, full of elegance and charm and the other, strong and confident. The concert concludes with his monumental, fascinatingly-textured “Organ” Symphony.

All the subtlety and color of French music comes together in this concert — the music of visionaries. Messiaen’s deeply held religious faith inspired music of great spirituality, which he captured in this early work — a meditation on sacramental offerings both given and received. Lili Boulanger’s poignant work came just before her tragic death at age 24 and feels full of foreboding. Debussy conjures every possible play of light on the seemingly infinite sea in all its moods. And we are thrilled to welcome the truly poetic Tabea Zimmermann for the first Seattle Symphony performances of Bartók’s Viola Concerto — in which he draws inspiration from Hungarian folk traditions.

VSO explores the music of two iconic and powerful 20th century ballets, alongside Boulanger’s bright celebration of spring. In this concert, multiple cameras capture the orchestra in close-ups on a large screen, giving the audience an intimate view of the virtuosic musicians as they tackle the scores. Andrew Crust leads an immersive discussion on the background and creation of these masterpieces, the lives of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and the story of the ballets.

Poulenc’s Gloria, with its unexpected blend of secular and sacred sounds, fascinated (and scandalized) audiences from its first performances. “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues,” the composer remarked. Lili Boulanger’s impressionistic “Of a Spring Morning” introduces the program with a bright festivity. Jean-Marie Zeitouni, a conductor of “ebullience and infectious enjoyment” (Boulder Weekly), leads this vivacious performance, which invites the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and soprano Joélle Harvey to the stage for an evening of exultation that will keep music-lovers enraptured to its final whispered “Amen.”

Painting in tones – that has always been one of the specialties of French music. Claude Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is probably the best-known example: the heat shimmers, the sun blazes, and erotic fantasies wander. But "Spring Morning" by Lili Boulanger, who died young, also conjures up colourful images before our inner eyes. It is hard to believe that such a light-flooded, life-loving piece was written when the highly talented composer was already struggling with death.

Audiences can look forward to Johannes Brahms' "Von ewiger Liebe" from Four Songs, Op. 83, Lili Boulanger's "Quatre Chansons," and "Parto, parto, ma tu ben mio" from W.A. Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito." The recital will also feature selected songs by Samuel Barber, a touching piece by Alexander Dargomyzhsky titled "Я всe ещe его люблю" (I Still Love Him), "Люди спят" (People are Asleep) by Sergei Taneyev, and "Ночь" (Night) by Anton Rubinstein.

Sensational multi-prize-winning pianist, Wynona Wang, makes her Midland Symphony Orchestra debut playing the bouncy and bold Piano Concerto in A minor, a piece written by Clara Schumann when she was only a teenager. The Orchestra will then play works by other groundbreaking female composers, featuring Amy Beach’s glorious ‘Gaelic’ Symphony – the first to be published by an American Woman – and Lili Boulanger's masterful tone poem, D'un Matin de pintemps, about the pleasure and promise of a spring morning.

Curated by SPCO Principal Bassoonist Andrew Brady and flutist Alicia McQuerrey, this special Express Concert includes evocative works by Maurice Ravel, Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Golijov which explore the passion-filled dance between life and death. We have so much to celebrate this season - The BI Database reaching its one-year anniversary, Women’s History Month, Our 6th-annual WoCo fest coming up in April, but most of all the 40th Birthday of our Co-Founder, Artistic and Executive Director, Dr. Laura Colgate.

This concert, performed by our two co-founders, will be a festive occasion to celebrate all that BI has done so far and look forward to all of the exciting things to come. We begin this French banquet with the exceptional music of 20th-Century French composer Lili Boulanger. Works will include the triumphant Hymne au Soleil, the exotic and highly dramatic Vieille prière bouddhique, and the touching, poetic Sous Bois.

Then we turn to Francis Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, one of the great masterpieces of French choral music, in league with the Requiems of Duruflé and Fauré. The work is alternately sumptuous and boldly dramatic; listen for moments of sparkling clarity and others of great depth.

In February, Hersh and the MSO will explore the sounds of the 1920’s and 30’s in the U.S. and France. We’ll open the program with William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony which debuted to critical acclaim at Carnegie Hall in 1934 with Leopold Stokowski leading the Philadelphia Orchestra. Hersh then takes us to France to discover what an actual American in Paris would have heard in the 1920s with Lili Boulanger’s colorful and energetic D’un Matin de Printemps (Of a Spring Morning). The evening will end with An American in Paris.
