Through music spanning the 1920s to today, the American Composers Orchestra explores the United States’ influence on the Weimar Republic, and, conversely, aspects of the Weimar legacy that resonate now in American culture. They perform Antheil’s Jazz Symphony, one of the first significant classical pieces influenced by jazz; short works by Duke Ellington, which caused a sensation during Sam Wooding and the Chocolate Kiddies’ 1925 tour of Berlin and Hamburg; and “My Ship” from Kurt Weill’s Lady in the Dark, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin. New works include a world premiere by Tonia Ko, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall; a world premiere by John Glover, featuring mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williamsand accordionist Felipe Hostins; and the New York premiere of Clans from Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Lowak Shoppala’.

The SLSO and Jazz St. Louis come together for a very special festival. In three concerts over two weeks, Leonard Slatkin explores the ways jazz has enriched orchestral music. Each program ends with a work by George Gershwin, here suite from the opera Porgy and Bess. George Antheil’s Jazz Symphony is one of the first works of orchestral jazz, and Duke Ellington’s final work, The Three Black Kings was written as a eulogy for Martin Luther King, Jr. Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins makes her SLSO debut in Emmy winner Jeff Beal’s new jazz-inflected Violin Concerto.

Bjorn Kydland is a native of Massachusetts, having lived there for 23 years so far. At age 11, Bjorn began to study trumpet, and since has done so with various helpful private teachers. Until 8th grade, he was homeschooled, and then transitioned to his local high school in order to join the band program. During high school Bjorn joined NEC Preparatory School playing in the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and went on after to attend Boston Conservatory at Berklee for a bachelor’s degree. He now attends the Carnegie Mellon School of Music pursuing his Masters in Trumpet Performance.

Pianist and composer Vijay Iyer’s Human Archipelago, written for cello soloist Inbal Segev, makes use of jazz-like techniques to explore climate change and human migration. George Antheil’s A Jazz Symphony was one of the first American works to fuse jazz and classical music, while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a work of extraordinary rhythmic vitality, has actually been covered by several jazz musicians.

In a tongue-in-cheek quip, Brahms described his Second Piano Concerto as “a tiny, tiny pianoforte
concerto, with a tiny, tiny wisp of a scherzo.” Approaching the dimensions of a symphony, full of
nobility and brilliance, the monstrously difficult work will be performed by the world-renowned Austrian pianist, Rudolf Buchbinder.

Continuing a partnership forged between the American Symphony Orchestra and the Bryant Park Corporation in the wake of COVID-19, the ASO will present a free concert as part of the Picnic Performance series at Bryant Park. The program highlights the different forms of expression and musical languages that emerged in the 1920s, including new elements of dance, theater and jazz.

In the years immediately following World War I, the American artistic scene experienced an extraordinary burst of creativity. Responding to the horror and brutality of that war, artists, writers and composers rejected the exalted ideals of the previous century, focusing instead on creating new means of expression, ones that would accurately reflect the realities this new age required. With jazz, many American composers found a new source of inspiration, one distinctly American, as well as thoroughly fresh, modern and exciting. Some of the works offered in this program reflect this fascination in the Roaring Twenties with this language, with its irresistible rhythmic energy and catchy melodies. Other composers sought to push the boundaries of musical expression with radical, ‘ultra-modern’ languages. Whether by polytonality, jagged counterpoint and asymmetric ostinatos, or brash atonality—in which melody, harmony and rhythm are harshly distorted and deconstructed—the experimental impulses of this generation are presented here in its arguably finest exponents.

First, listen to music of the era in the concert hall, such as George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris.Then, foxtrot on the Plaza to the JT & Friends band, and finally, enjoy the landmark 1927 silent film It starring Clara Bow, accompanied on the organ by Dennis James.

AMERICA IN WEIMAR: ON THE MARGINS explores American influence on the Weimar period and—conversely—the legacy of Weimar’s embrace of transgression, non-Teutonic identity, and utopian ideals, all of which continually resonate in today’s American art and music.

America in Weimar: On the Margins

A master of American musical style, <strong>John Morris Russell</strong> has devoted himself to redefining the American orchestral experience. In his tenth year as conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the wide-range and diversity of his work as a conductor, collaborator and educator continues to reinvigorate the musical scene throughout Cincinnati and across the continent. As Music Director of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina, Mr. Russell leads the classical subscription series as well as the prestigious Hilton Head International Piano Competition; he also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, following in the footsteps of Marvin Hamlisch and Doc Severinsen. As a guest conductor, JMR has worked with many of the most distinguished orchestras in North America.

The Festival Strings Lucerne and Daniel Dodds are tying together a delightful garland of the loveliest melodies and dances from the New World in keeping with this summer’s theme, “American Dreams.” Though the program begins with a Czech composer — Antonín Dvořák, with the vibrant and feather-light Scherzo from his Serenade for Strings — it fits perfectly, since Dvořák was the “midwife” who helped American music discover its own identity. The African American composer Florence Price carries his musical language forward: her touching Andante cantabile goes straight to the heart. Also on board is the “Bad Boy of Music,” George Antheil, with a cheeky Allegro from his First Serenade. John Corigliano sends us traveling toward a better world filled with pleasure and brightness in his sonorous Voyage, inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s famous poem L’Invitation au voyage. George Gershwin enchants with a gentle lullaby, and Leonard Bernstein invites us to waltz. And how to top all that? With the Hoe-Down from Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo, of course — a square dance in classic country style.
