The charismatic Italian-British conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, who has been absent from the season since 2018, returns to lead the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, a forty-year-old ensemble that brings together instrumentalists from all over Europe. The program is entirely twentieth-century and evokes the spirit of American jazz, from the ballets La création du monde by Milhaud and Fancy Free by Bernstein to the Variations on «I Got Rhythm» by Gershwin. The London Choral Sinfonia brings an evening of 20th Century performance to launch their 2024-5 season of music. Commissioned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The ‘Symphony of Psalms was written whilst Igor Stravinsky was in his neoclassical period. The text of three Psalms (39,4 and 150) and influences by composers including Bach create this intriguing piece. The three movement ‘Chichester Psalms’ saw Leonard Bernstein choose texts from a number of psalms to create tuneful, tonal contemporary piece, first performed in 1965. The program opens with Viet Cuong’s Deciduous, a piece written after the passing of Cuong’s father that reflects the cyclical nature of loss and healing. Alan Hovhaness’s Symphony No. 4 is a fusion of inspirations ranging from seventh-century Armenian religious music to the orchestral music of China’s Tang Dynasty. In his fourth symphony, Arthur Meulemans sought to maintain the individual sounds of the sections of the orchestra, creating a rich and colorful mosaic. The program concludes with Leonard Bernstein’s symphonic suite from the Academy Award-winning 1954 film “On the Waterfront,” which juxtaposes moments of tenderness with elements of cold savagery as depicted in the movie.

Conductor Dima Slobodeniouk leads the BSO in Bernstein’s Age of Anxiety, a piece inspired by W.H. Auden’s Pulitzer prize-winning poem of the same name. The music's shape is meant to closely mirror the poem, which tells the story of four young strangers who meet in a bar during WWII. Young virtuoso Conrad Tao joins as the piano soloist for Bernstein.

This year's event promises to be a spectacular showcase of talent, featuring extraordinary alumni and faculty from the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music. The program includes audience favorites ranging from Schubert’s beloved song "The Shepherd on the Rock" to pieces by legendary Curtis alumni Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, and Nantucket’s own Ned Rorem.

**Performers:**
- **Sophia Hunt, Soprano:** A Brazilian-American soprano praised for her trenchant and vocally skilled performances. Ms. Hunt is a current member of the Dutch National Opera Studio and has received numerous accolades, including top prizes in the 2023 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition and the 2023 Orpheus Vocal Competition.
- **Sara Han, Clarinet:** An active clarinetist from Seoul, South Korea, currently a DaCamera Young Artist based in Houston, TX. Ms. Han has performed with prestigious orchestras such as The Florida Orchestra and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra.
- **Ying Li, Piano:** A twenty-five-year-old Chinese pianist and First Prize winner of the 2021 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions. Ms. Li has performed with leading orchestras and at renowned venues worldwide.
- **Roberto Díaz, Viola:** President and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr. Díaz is a violist of international reputation. He has collaborated with leading conductors and composers and has a significant impact on American musical life through his dual roles as performer and educator.

- **Soul Classics Reimagined:** Electrifying arrangements by Gabriel Globus-Hoenich, including:
