Celebrating composer Stephen Sondheim, this Tony Award-winning non-stop farcical comedy centers around renowned traveling actress Desirée Armfeldt and the two married men in love with her, lawyer Fredrik Egerman and Count Carl-Magnus Malcom. Jealousy and suspicion drive the entangled web of lovers and their families to a weekend in the country with Desirée, where romantic complications arise and hilarity quickly ensues. The unending night casts its magic spell, inviting the possibility for new and rekindled romances.  Charlie Parker’s Yardbird paints a portrait of the tortured jazzman, legendary saxophonist, and inventor of ‘bebop.’ As his soul lingers between life and death, Charlie (Martin Bakari) returns to his famous NYC jazz club, Birdland, and is challenged to compose a final masterpiece, all while pondering the inspirations, demons, and women who fueled his creative genius. Indianapolis-native and opera superstar Angela Brown debuted the role of Charlie’s mother, Addie Parker, and will reprise this powerful character for the Indiana premiere. Written by composer Daniel Schnyder with libretto by the late playwright Bridgette A. Wimberly, this 90-minute opera offers an unflinching portrayal of one man’s journey to redemption against a backdrop of the music, opioid crisis, and racial inequality of 1950s America.

The mission of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition is to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their future careers. The competition takes place throughout the United States and Canada, and the Indiana District is hosted by the Indianapolis Opera each year. Started in the 1930s, this premier competition has been a defining step in the careers of our greatest opera stars. The state of Indiana has produced more winners than any other state in the country - join us and witness the future of opera. The Indiana District Competition will take place on January 13, 2024 in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on the University of Indianapolis campus.

Thank you for joining us for Opera in the Park on Saturday, September 9, 2023. It was a wonderful event filled with beautiful music! Our celebrity host Angela Brown performed an iconic aria from her upcoming role in Indianapolis Opera's Charlie Parker's Yardbird, as well as stunned us with the world premiere of "Cerise's Story" from When the Caged Bird Sings by Nkeiru Okoye. Our Resident Artists had an incredible Indianapolis Opera debut, and Kirsten Gunlogson brought beautiful renditions of "Habanera" and "Send in the Clowns" to this fantastic program. Joshua "Sock Joplin" Thompson performed a stunning piano rendition of "Valley of Bones" by Margaret Bonds and Everett Greene paired with Angela Brown to light up the stage with "Thank Heaven for You" by Micky Grant. We are thrilled that so many of you were able to join us for this event. This Opera in the Park crowd was the largest yet!

Every year, the Opera creates an original children's opera to share with the youngest members of our Hoosier community, along with their teachers and families. These operas include a detailed curriculum guide and are a part of our "Sing Me A Story" series, which brings musical opportunities to elementary school children of every culture and background. Often inspired by fairy tales and fables, each children's opera has a relevant moral at the center of its story. In these outreach events, children are not only exposed to the thrill of live opera singing, but they are also given the opportunity to learn about important topics like bullying, acceptance, overcoming fears, and making new friends.

Joshua Thompson (Sock Joplin) performed a stunning piano rendition of "Troubled Water" by Margaret Bonds and paired with Jared Thompson on saxophone and soprano Angela Brown to light up the stage with "Trust" by Roy Hargrove with original lyrics by Jared Thompson. We are thrilled that so many of you were able to join us for this event. This Opera in the Park crowd was the largest yet!
