Opera Parallèle returns to the Presidio Theatre to present the world premiere of a newly reimagined version of Doubt, the iconic story of suspicion, morality, and shifty power dynamics in a Catholic school. Adapted from John Patrick Shanley’s Oscar-nominated film and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this contemporary opera features an evocative score by Douglas J. Cuomo. Conceived by Brian Staufenbiel and conducted by Nicole Paiement, this striking new production focuses on the psychological tension between four central characters, creating an intimate, immersive experience. The design, inspired by a church, places the orchestra on stage, making them an active participant in the drama. This inventive, multi-sensory production invites you to step into the narrative as part of the “congregation,” blurring the lines between observer and participant, creating a gripping experience you won’t forget.

A new presentation of the classic fairytale La Belle et la Bête blurs the boundaries of film and opera, fusing Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film with a powerful and arresting score by Philip Glass, thus honoring two of the great artistic minds of modern times. Opera Parallèle is the first company to present performances of all three operas Glass wrote in homage to Cocteau, having performed Orphée in 2011, Les Enfants Terribles in 2017, and La Belle et la Bête in 2022

Conductor Carl St.Clair, renowned for his expertise in Wagnerian opera, having conducted the entire 15-hour Ring Cycle from memory in Weimar, will lead the Pacific Symphony through the gripping narrative of "Das Rheingold." This semi-staged opera, performed in German with English supertitles, promises an unforgettable journey through Wagner's mythic prologue, where the stakes are as high as the heavens and as deep as the Rhine itself.

The West Coast Premiere of a deeply romantic masterpiece entwining loyalty, passion, and forbidden love amidst ‘The Lavender Scare’ of the 1950’s.

Gold, protected by the daughters of the river Rhine, harbours a deep magic. Anyone who casts a ring made from it can rule the whole world but must also renounce love forever. The promise of unlimited power proves irresistible to opportunistic gods, arguing giants, and ambitious dwarfs. The power of the gold trades hands many times, leaving a trail of misery and murder in its wake. Whoever wears the “rheingold” is cursed to be its slave. 

Wagner’s retelling of Norse mythology in Das Rheingold portrays universal themes of love and power, and the forceful music creates a grandeur unparalleled in opera. This is further magnified by positioning the entire eighty-piece orchestra and conductor on the stage with the cast and set.

Based on James Hilton’s classic novella, composer Gordon Getty’s opera Goodbye, Mr. Chips tells of the life of beloved English schoolmaster Mr. Chipping, known to his students and others as “Mr. Chips.” Set at Brookfield, “a good public school of the second rate” in Eastern England, the story follows Chips from his first days at the boarding school in 1870, through his marriage to the woman who will change him forever, to the rapid changes of the turn of the century and outbreak of World War I. Along the way, we’re reminded of the difference one good teacher can make as we watch Chips and his children, “thousands of them, all boys,” enrich each other’s lives. The opera’s world premiere took place on November 14, 2021, in San Rafael, CA.

Would you renounce love to become all powerful? The Nibelung Alberich steals enchanted gold to craft a ring which allows him to do just that. Yet the corruptive power won’t be his forever as gods and giants discover how far they will go to possess the cursed ring. Brother kills brother, the innocent are enslaved, and the King of Gods must decide where his power truly lies.

Bass-baritone and Wagner veteran Greer Grimsley returns as Wotan alongside Frederick Ballentine, Michael Mayes, and Kenneth Kellogg in their first Seattle Opera Wagner production. Internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves makes her Seattle Opera debut as the earth goddess Erda.

Gordon Getty's celebrated opera reimagined for film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, receives a special screening at the historic Cameo Cinema in St. Helena. Getty’s fourth opera is based on the popular 1934 book Goodbye, Mr. Chips and other stories by James Hilton. Directed by Brian Staufenbiel, the film features tenor Nathan Granner, soprano Marnie Breckenridge, baritone Lester Lynch, and bass-baritone Kevin Short. The orchestra of stellar Bay Area players is conducted by Nicole Paiement. Members of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, conducted by Francisco J. Núñez, also perform.
