Celebrated South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son returns to the Orpheum to showcase two piano concertos by the French Romantic composer, Maurice Ravel. Maestro Tausk then takes us on an adventure into the fairytale world of Ravel’s Mother Goose, inspired by classic stories like Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and more. Dedicated to the memory of British composer Oliver Knussen, George Benjamin’s tour-de-force Concerto for Orchestra highlights the virtuosity of the musicians of our VSO.

After shaking the foundations of Southam Hall with her fiery NACO debut last season, pianist Yeol Eum Son makes her highly anticipated return to perform Maurice Ravel's glittering Concerto in G for piano and orchestra. Inspired by the Basque folk songs of his childhood and the hot jazz he heard while on tour in Harlem and New Orleans during the Roaring '20s, Ravel's captivating concerto journeys between moments of whip-crack humor and sweet nostalgia.

As is customary annually, Antwerp Symphony concludes its summer break with a concert at the renowned Concertgebouw Amsterdam, a familiar venue. Presenting Dvořák's Eighth Symphony and Mozart's virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 22, the orchestra showcases two masterpieces spanning over a century. Esteemed pianist Yeol Eum Son, well-versed in Mozart's music, joins energetic conductor Eduardo Strausser in guiding us through this refined concerto.

Edward Elgar scored an instant hit with his 1899 Enigma Variations, and he's been captivating new generations with it ever since. Enigma found its way into the films Dunkirk (2017) and The Matrix (1999), as well as the solemn funerals of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II.

Grieg’s beloved and unabashedly Romantic Piano Concerto, performed by Yeol Eum Son, dances and dazzles and reflects a time of personal happiness in the composer’s life. A combination of beguiling melodies and bravura fire, it found inspiration in the rhythmic patterns of Norwegian folk dances. Maestro Danzmayr also leads Stenhammar’s Second Symphony, a Romantic Swedish jewel not heard nearly often enough. Plus, Sibelius’ stirring The Swan of Tuonela joins this Nordic musical banquet, inspired by scenes from Finnish mythology.

A monsoon downpour and a cascade of flame: elemental forces are in play as Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra continue their season with music inspired by the environment in all its fragility and power.
