Upstream is a violin-piano duo project by Will Healy and George Meyer. It is a showcase for their co-compositions, which draw on a shared background in classical music, as well as a range of other styles. Will and George each live with a foot outside of classical music: George works regularly with bluegrass musicians, and Will with hip-hop and jazz artists.

They have performed together in many of New York City’s homes for new music, including Carnegie Hall, (Le) Poisson Rouge, the DiMenna Center, National Sawdust, and Roulette Intermedium. Their debut album, comprised of twelve co-written compositions, will be released in Spring 2027.

Their co-compositional approach was present from their earliest collaborations and improvisations together, going back to their time together as students at The Juilliard School. They formalized their duo in 2022, with invitations to premiere newly-composed music at the Tribeca New Music Festival and Sophia Rosoff Concert series in NYC and at Midsummer's Music in Door County, Wisconsin.

In Good Company: George Meyer & Friends in Concert

Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment

George Meyer is equally interested in “classical” music, in fiddle music, and in what they have in common; these interests inform his composing. His pieces for classical string-playing friends make use of lessons learned from the fiddle side, and vice versa.

American music masters Sam Bush, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyer join with George Meyer for the kind of special collaboration usually heard only at a bluegrass festival. Bush and Marshall are mandolin virtuosos rooted in bluegrass. The Meyers (Edgar on acoustic bass, son George on violin) come from the classical world. Together, they make acoustic music that can only be categorized as “amazing.” You’ll hear works from the 1999 genre-bending album Short Trip Home (which featured Bush, Marshall, and the elder Meyer), plus new music written for this tour. Four musical stars are coming together in a burst of creativity; don’t miss it!
