The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is a professional orchestra based in Ridgefield, Connecticut, dedicated to enriching the cultural life of Ridgefield and its surrounding communities through the performance of music at the highest artistic level. The orchestra's mission extends beyond performance to include active community involvement and innovative educational programs aimed at fostering an appreciation for music among citizens of all ages. Founded in 1964 as the Ridgefield Symphonette, the RSO has a storied history marked by significant growth and artistic development. Marcus Fischer, one of the founders, served as the first conductor, setting the stage for the orchestra's evolution. Over the years, the RSO has undergone several name changes, reflecting its expanding scope and professionalization. In 1970, under the baton of its third music director, Beatrice Brown, the ensemble transitioned to a professional orchestra through musician auditions. The orchestra was renamed the Ridgefield Orchestra in 1976 and later became the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra in 1986. The RSO has a tradition of presenting diverse programming and has been involved in notable performances and projects. In 1977, the orchestra performed at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and recorded an LP that was highly praised by The New York Times. In 2012, the RSO produced the "Sweet Dreams" CD, featuring lullabies in various languages, in collaboration with philanthropist Harold Spratt. More recently, the 2021 season saw the world premiere of "A More Perfect Union" by composer Paul Frucht, and the 2022-23 season featured celebrated works such as Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. The RSO has been led by a series of distinguished music directors, including Yuga Cohler, who has held the position since 2018. Past music directors have included Gerald Steichen, Sidney Rothstein, and Salvatore Princiotti, each contributing to the orchestra's growth and success. The RSO's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is central to its values, with a stance against racism and discrimination and a dedication to featuring diverse voices in its musical and educational offerings. The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra operates from its office at 77 Danbury Road, Ridgefield, CT, with performances held at various venues, including the Anne S. Richardson Auditorium at Ridgefield High School and the Ridgefield Playhouse. The organization continues to thrive through community support, donations, and the efforts of the Ridgefield Orchestra Foundation, which was established in 1977 to manage an endowment for the orchestra.
