After his father’s unexpected death, pianist Adam Tendler received his inheritance as a literal wad of cash in a parking lot—an encounter that became the catalyst for an ambitious commissioning project. Inviting a wide-ranging group of composers and sound artists, Tendler asked each to respond to the idea of “inheritance,” resulting in a deeply personal yet universally resonant body of new piano works.

Pianist Adam Tendler Performs Minimalist Masterpieces

Bargemusic

Today, Adam Tendler performs two seminal minimalist masterpieces for solo piano, John Adams’s epic Phrygian Gates (1977-78) at 2pm, and Tom Johnson’s haunting An Hour for Piano (1971) at 4pm. Both works challenged conventions of long-form piano writing, and each uniquely invites the listener on an odyssey of pattern and harmony that is at times sensuous, dramatic, playful, ecstatic, patient — and ultimately transcendent. For these performances, the audience will be invited to freely explore the new Bargemusic space. This program is in memory of the recent passing of Tom Johnson, a personal friend of the pianist.

Vermont-native pianist Adam Tendler premieres a new piano concerto composed by fellow Vermonter Nico Muhly, based on 18th century hymn tunes by Justin Morgan. VSO's guest vocal soloists explore Des Prez' moving love song, and the VSO Chorus joins for Mozart's enduring requiem.

Grammy-nominated pianist Adam Tendler performs Béla Bartók’s complete Mikrokosmos in a landmark theatrical recital led by critically-acclaimed director Mary Birnbaum. A comprehensive piano method and audacious survey of a composer's own evolution, Mikrokosmos begins with a single five-finger scale and leads — through 153 movements — to the vibrant language of Bartók's mature voice. A “daring pianist” praised for his “adventurousness and muscular skill” (The New York Times), Adam Tendler has been called “the hottest pianist on the American contemporary classical scene” (Minnesota Star Tribune), “relentlessly adventurous” (The Washington Post), a “remarkable and insightful musician” (Los Angeles Times) and an “intrepid... maverick pianist” (The New Yorker). This program will be the first time Tendler performs Mikrokosmos in its complete form, and the world premiere of this theatrical realization by Mary Birnbaum.
