Vienna Academy Orchestra Anniversary Concert

Since 2016, the Gaechinger Cantorey has captivated audiences as Bach ambassadors with their own unique "Stuttgart Bach style," which the baroque orchestra and choir enjoy presenting far beyond the country's borders. The acoustics of the baroque pilaster church of St. Catherine in Wolfegg are tailor-made for Bach: His appointment to Leipzig's St. Thomas Church enabled the composer, for the first time, to devote himself entirely to "regulated church music in the glory of God." Sunday after Sunday, his sacred works were now heard in the three churches assigned to him as St. Thomas Cantor. Even though he occasionally took on existing works, posterity is amazed at the workload he managed each week. Added to this is his original, creative output, as well as the fact that he also organized the practical implementation, from writing the parts to rehearsals and performances. Together with four vocal soloists, the Gaechinger Cantorey performs three cantatas, which in turn accompany the readings of the Good Samaritan, the healing of lepers and the Archangel Michael.

On the shores of Lake Attersee, the view opens up to another season: Franz Schubert's Winterreise, one of the most radical song cycles of the Romantic era, is heard here in a rarely heard version for tenor and string quartet – intense, chamber music-like, transparent.

The St. Matthew Passion has always been a masterpiece, a pinnacle of oratorio art. In the tension between the double choir and two orchestras, we immerse ourselves in existential emotions and enormous musical depth. The reflective arias also give us insights into the human soul; we encounter our fear, hope and confidence.

Joseph Haydn’s »Creation« can be described as the most important oratorio of the Classical period. Together with George Frideric Handel’s oratorios, it had an impact right up to the High Romantic period. The three-part work sets the biblical account of the creation of the world to music in a tremendous wealth of colour, depicting a paradisiacal world with an impressive abundance of life. The choir responds to the narrative with songs of praise, of which »Die Himmel erzählen« has become one of the most popular vocal works.
