A deep blue, sparkling starry sky with a crescent moon overhead, upon which the star-flaming Queen of the Night floats effortlessly in – yes, this stage set is an icon, a true classic like "The Magic Flute" itself. It was designed by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1815 for a Berlin performance. Around ten years later, he and Peter Cremer designed the new theater building for the Theater Aachen. The famous sets from Schinkel's "Magic Flute" became a source of inspiration for Aachen artist Tim Berresheim, who, with exuberant imagination and computer-aided art, further developed the mystically twisted worlds between vining nature, temples, and starry skies. Together with director Geertje Boeden and costume designer Sarah Antonia Rung, he explores the riddles of this magical fairytale opera: Does good and evil exist? Who can Tamino, Papageno, and Pamina trust on their journey? Equipped with magical instruments that can bring peace to the world and with great hope of finding love along the way, the three attempt to overcome the power games of their parents' generation. The New Year's concert with choral jubilation awakens hope for peaceful coexistence among all people. Friedrich Schiller wrote his poem "Ode to Joy", which soon occupied Beethoven. It is exactly 200 years since the German premiere of the 9th Symphony, in which Beethoven champions the great and sublime, took place in Aachen. It is not without reason that this theme of the final movement became the European anthem.

Before that, a work by our Composer in Focus Philipp Maintz is on the program. Maintz, a native of Aachen, was inspired to write his short orchestral piece "red china green house" by the conversation books of the deaf Beethoven. He describes the underlying mood as "bright, light, summery - and a little mischievous" - a promising start to the new year!

The title is not misleading – Anton Webern's "Im Sommerwind" (In the Summer Wind) from 1904 is indeed an unclouded orchestral idyll, still firmly in the tradition of Liszt, Wagner, and Strauss. Almost nothing betrays the future avant-garde artist – except perhaps the 20-year-old's already perceptible sensitivity for the finest sound blends. The germ of Mahler's Second Symphony was also a one-movement symphonic poem. It was initially titled "Totenfeier" (Funeral Celebration). This ultimately evolved into the five-movement "Resurrection Symphony," which transcends all boundaries in every respect. The finale, based on the chorale "Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n wirst Du" (Resurrection, yes you will rise), features a huge orchestra, an equally large choir, and two vocal soloists, unfolding with poignant power.
