An exuberant joie de vivre characterizes Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Symphony No. 4, which he began composing in Rome and Naples. Franz Schubert's budget never allowed a trip to Italy—but at least Italian opera was performed in Vienna. He supposedly bet his friends that he could compose overtures as lively as Rossini's, and subsequently created the overture "in the Italian style." Busoni's brilliant comedy overture also follows in the tradition of Rossini, but uses a late-Romantic orchestra, while Richard Strauss wrote his melancholic, serene oboe concerto for a deliberately small ensemble.

This year, fans of classical concerts can look forward to a very special French-Spanish touch. The focus of the evening is the guitar and with it the grandiose super hit by the Spaniard Joaquín Rodriguez, his Concierto de Aranjuez . The concert was composed in Paris and embodies the Spanish sound with jazz overtones like no other. It is flanked by two very different works of French literature: Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin , a homage to French music of the 18th century, and Bizet's symphonic debut, which is bursting with summery lightness, inventiveness and exuberance. Don't miss it!

The orchestral instruments in this musical fairytale by Howard Griffiths finally want to play somewhere other than their usual concert hall. Their dream is to perform at the big concert on Walpurgis Night. To get there, they need 90 flying broomsticks, which Knürsch is supposed to build. Knürsch is a grumpy gnome who lives deep in the basement of the concert hall. Because of the amount of work this trip creates for him and because no one thinks to take him along, he becomes even more grumpy. He does his best to sabotage the concert tour. So, a lot actually goes wrong...
