Grigory Sokolov

Teatro La Fenice

Grigory Sokolov is a legend. Describing him as one of the most significant pianists of the present day is not an assertion, but a widely confirmed fact. Critics of high standing admit that they lack the right words to describe his art. But perhaps one doesn't even need words, but rather be convinced by him directly. "Art is a parallel universe to reality," he says, and proves it in a unique way in each of his concerts. And as always, he keeps it exciting: he announces his programs at short notice. Thus, the anticipation of a reliably unforgettable concert experience can blend with the expectation of the unexpected when the pianist unfolds his magic touch with music from the Baroque, Viennese Classical, or Romantic periods. By invitation of the Dresden Philharmonic in cooperation with DK Deutsche Klassik.

Palace of Culture

His fans know it: Grigory Sokolov only announces his programme later in the concert year. And it doesn't really matter what he plays. Whether Schubert or Scriabin, Bach or Mozart, Chopin or Rameau: when Sokolov sits at the piano, you can expect the extraordinary. When he touches the keys, everything around him becomes secondary, and once the pianist is immersed in this world of his own, he makes you forget time and space and lets the audience take part in an extraordinary piano recital. It is no wonder that he has built up a large circle of fans over the course of his life as a pianist. With his outstanding artistry, which he always puts entirely at the service of the music, he has literally mesmerised us for decades. And it is no longer a secret that the pianist likes to give the odd encore ...(Pro Arte Frankfurt)

Museum Ludwig

For Grigory Sokolov, "art is a parallel universe to reality," and this exceptional pianist repeatedly transports his audience to this very universe with his precise and incredibly detailed piano playing. When he touches the keys, everything around him becomes unimportant, and once immersed in this very special world, Grigory Sokolov lets time and space disappear, allowing the audience to participate in an extraordinary piano recital. There are few pianists who select their programs with such artistic sensitivity and prepare and perform the selected works with such fascinating meticulousness as Grigory Sokolov. This year, he presents works by William Byrd and Johannes Brahms, spanning the spectrum from the English late Renaissance to German Romanticism. And it should be no secret by now that the pianist enjoys playing the occasional encore...

Grigory Sokolov, piano

Friedrich-von-Thiersch-Saal

An authentic legend of our time, Grigory Sokolov embodies the purest essence of pianism: his is an art that rejects compromise and lives solely in the unrepeatable moment of the concert. An inspiration that, for the first time, is part of the Teatro Regio’s season, for an evening that sees him as the absolute protagonist. Appreciated equally by connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike for the almost mystical intensity of his performances and for his boundless knowledge of the piano repertoire, the artist has a very intimate relationship with music: “I do not play on demand,” he declared in an interview, “I only play what I wish to play, or rather, only what I wish to play at that very moment. Every piece must arouse in me a burning desire.”
