"Blessings of the afflicted" – this is how Johannes Brahms himself described his "German Requiem," and truly: it is a work for the living, less a music of mourning than of consolation. With his Requiem, Brahms deliberately turns away completely from church conventions, allowing himself a very personal religious perspective: The selection of biblical passages, the use of German language, all of this underscores the composer's stated goal of placing the mourning, suffering human being at the center of his work, both universally and individually.

Clara Schumann wrote in her diary about the premiere of Brahms's Liebeslieder-Waltzes: "I played very happily, the audience was really enthusiastic. The love songs - Johannes played them with me four-handed - went down well and were very well received." Originally written for vocal soloists, Brahms praised a choir performance as "exemplary". Chorwerk Ruhr presents a program all about Brahms with songs that tell of love and transience.

Scylla lives withdrawn into herself, as if in emotional hibernation. Reason, peace, and harmony reign in her cosmos. When Glaucus enters her life, everything changes: She experiences love in all its colors and facets – and does not recognize herself. The opera describes all the lust, wildness, panic, and despair that the young woman experiences as she rediscovers the world for herself. In the end, she will be someone else. Jean-Marie Leclair's rarely performed only opera is a musical discovery. Director Claus Guth returns to Opernhaus Zürich with this new production.
