In our Pur series, which has become a hit with audiences in recent years, we put a well-known piece of classical music centre stage: a good half hour of talk, then the work in progress. Pur is attended by specialists and beginners, people who know the works almost by heart and those who are perhaps attending the concert for the first time. And the feedback is: everyone takes something away with them! A relaxed atmosphere, a manageable concert length and the opportunity to have a nice chat after the concert: who wouldn’t want to become a » Pur-ist «? The first is the second, and the second is the first. But actually, the first is the third and the second is really the second, because the zero is the first. But now let’s get things in order: there is hardly any talk of a zero – the young Beethoven’s sketches for a piano concerto in E-flat major – today. Ludwig van Beethoven was not convinced for a long time about his next piano concerto, the one in B-flat major, which is now known as the Second Concerto and whose sketches date back to his time in Bonn. He hesitated to publish it and reworked it several times. The C-major-concerto, on the other hand, apparently appealed to him. It seemed suitable for his Viennese debut as a pianist with orchestra! And so we have the nomenclatural salad. The good thing is: once you are sitting in the concert hall, these confusions are uninteresting, because both the 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos have their fully developed personality and captivate us. We have not yet reached the stormy, grim, symphonic Beethoven of the 5th Symphony or the 3rd Piano Concerto – but we must not forget that the composer was just 25 years old in the mid-1790s: smartly dressed in the latest fashion, with a short hairstyle, on his way to conquer the world capital of music, Vienna, with his stormy, witty, passionate and profound piano playing.
