In reference to painting, a style that was prevalent in France from around 1890 to 1920 is also called "Impressionism" in music. Debussy in particular was influential with his very own musical language. At the same time, the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 was the first time that non-European music and musical instruments became known to a wider audience and influenced many composers in exciting ways.
