With the oratorio "Elijah," we continue our excellent collaboration with the Berlin Cathedral Choir and dedicate ourselves to one of Felix Mendelssohn's most important works. With this work, Mendelssohn brought oratorio music to new heights with its power, classical rigor, and romantic flavor. He spent ten years pregnant with the subject matter because he was extraordinarily fascinated and impressed by the figure of the prophet Elijah. He wrote that Elijah was a prophet "such as we could use again today, fiercely zealous, also evil, angry, and dark, in contrast to the court rabble and the common people, and in contrast to almost the entire world, yet borne as if on angel's wings."

Liselotte von der Pfalz (1652-1722), a princess at the court of the Sun King, wrote letters as we write tweets today: untiringly and sometimes several times a day to the same addressee. Rather like an elderly lady who is always on the telephone. The princess came to Versailles as the wife of Monsieur, the brother Louis XIV, and lived at the most magnificent court of her day until her death. Her writings provide a picture of life as seen from the very centre of the most famous royal court of the period.

Because of its melodic beauty and positive mood, Brahms' Symphony No. 2 has been compared time and again to Beethoven's "Pastoral". Yet it was precisely with this symphony that Brahms had emancipated himself from his great role model to such an extent that, as he said, he no longer "heard this giant marching behind him". But Brahms would not be Brahms if, as an eternal brooder, he had not hidden a tear in the charming harmony of his 2nd Symphony, if he had not surrounded the beauty that extends into the universal with a certain melancholy. It is precisely this ambivalence that lends great passages such as the yearning Adagio of the second movement their magic.
